Chemical Engineering
Jamie is a chemical engineer in a pharmaceutical firm that manufactures controlled release medications. Most of these products use plastic capsules, designed to dissolve slowly and release the drug only as it is needed by the body. But, the company is also involved in "transdermal" medications, like the "nicotine patch," where the medication is placed outside the body in something similar to a bandage and gradually absorbed through the skin. For both of these products, Jamie has had to invent new types of materials, capable of sensing when and how much medication to release. These materials also have to cope with the unique conditions of the body, such as withstanding the highly acidic nature of the human digestive system, without becoming a permanent fixture in, or on, the person’s body. As Jamie illustrates, chemical engineers are constantly being asked to put their creativity to use to synthesize new materials, transform combinations of elements of matter, and develop the processes to do it all safely, efficiently, and on a large scale. Chemical engineers process and package many of the foods we eat, help power our cars and heat our homes, and develop new materials from garbage. The continued demand for new products, and for more economical processes to improve older products, can make for an exciting, dynamic future for chemical engineers. As a chemical engineer, you may . . .

Chemical Engineering Department Chair: Milorad Dudukovic Home Page: http://wuche.wustl.edu/ Email: chedept@che.wustl.edu Telephone: Chemical engineers are concerned with the development, design, and operation of systems which involve chemical or biological reactions and the transfer of energy and mass from one location to another. These systems may range from large chemical plants and petroleum refineries to artificial organs for the human body. In addition to their traditional role in the chemical industry, chemical engineers in recent years have become heavily involved in such areas as the development of new energy sources, the solution of environmental problems, synthesis and processing of new materials, biomedical engineering, and biochemical processing. A contemporary approach to chemical engineering is emphasized consistent with modern developments in computer-supported problem solving and modern laboratory technology. Opportunities for graduate studies and research in Chemical Engineering are available in a number of areas, including biomedical engineering; environmental engineering; chemical reaction engineering; transport phenomena and rheology; polymer science and engineering; composite materials technology; computer-aided process design and optimal control; and industrial catalysis. The Department also collaborates in the Biological and Medical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering programs, and the professional master's program in Control Engineering.

The Chemical Engineering program at Manhattan College was established in 1958. The department offers a strong traditional curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree. Chemical engineers combine mathematics and advanced chemistry with engineering principles to design, develop and operate industrial processes for the manufacture of a host of products including baked goods, beverages, medicine, cosmetics, gasoline, heating oil, plastics, synthetic fibers, paint, solvents and chemical intermediates. A chemical engineer's training permits the student to work in design and construction, computer simulation, specialty chemicals, industrial gases, food processing, petroleum fractionation, polymers, pollution prevention and remediation, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or pulp and paper industries.

What is a Chemical Engineer?
a) An Engineer who manufactures chemicals,
b) A Chemist who works in a factory, or
c) A glorified Plumber
This is actually a trick question as the correct answer is d) "None of the above." (Note however that chemical engineering students bored with the relentless "pipe-flow example" during fluid dynamics class may begin to think of themselves as simply "glorified plumbers".) The first two incorrect answers make sense based upon the narrow sounding title; "chemical engineer." Surely such a person must be either a "chemist who builds things", or an "engineer who makes chemicals". Yet, the English language has never really made any sense and the name "chemical engineer" is a case in point. "Enough already... go to the bottom ."

Introduction
Engineering is a profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences is applied to develop ways to use the materials and forces of nature economically for the benefit of humanity. In Chemical Engineering, students apply principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, environmental engineering, and health and safety sciences to the analysis, development, design, and automatic control of processes in which matter is physically or chemically transformed, separated, and/or transported. A biochemical engineering option is available which focuses on biological processes that require the integration of biochemistry, microbiology, and applied immunotechnology with other basic sciences. Chemical and biochemical engineers also produce products such as chemicals, polymers and pharmaceuticals for society at large.
