From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Chemical engineering is the application of science mathematics and economics to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. Chemical Engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for large-scale manufacture. Chemical engineers in this branch are usually employed under the title of process engineer . Following is an example that illustrates the process engineering part of chemical engineering: The individual processes used by chemical engineers (eg. distillation or chlorination ) are called unit operations and consist of chemical reaction mass- heat- and momentum- transfer operations. Unit operations are grouped together in various configurations for the purpose of chemical synthesis and/or chemical separation . Not all real processes, such as reactive distillation , are simple unit operations, but consist of intertwined transport and separation processes. Three primary physical laws underlying chemical engineering design are Conservation of mass Conservation of momentum and Conservation of energy . The movement of mass and energy around a chemical process are evaluated using Mass balances and energy balances which apply these laws to whole plants, unit operations or discrete parts of equipment. In doing so, Chemical Engineers use principles of

Chemistry portal Chemistry (in Greek ) is the science of matter that deals with the composition, structure, and properties of substances and with the transformations that they undergo. In the study of matter , chemistry also investigates its interactions with energy and itself (see physics biology ). Because of the diversity of matter, which is mostly in the form of atoms , chemists often study how atoms of different chemical elements interact to form molecules and how molecules interact with each other.

    Introduction
Chemistry is a large field encompassing many subdisciplines that often overlap with significant portions of other sciences. The fundamental component of chemistry is that it involves matter in some way (this explains its broad reach). It may involve the interaction of matter with non-material phenomenon, such as energy for example. More central to chemistry is the interaction of matter with matter such as in the classic chemical reaction where chemical bonds are broken and made, forming new molecules.

Biodiesel Research Recognized by U.S. EPA Chief
On September 7, 2004, the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mike Leavitt, came to UNR to recognize the research into alternative fuels by Dr. Hatice Gecol of the UNR Chemical Engineering Department. Dr. Gecol demonstrated her process to produce clean-burning diesel fuel from waste cooking oil and bio-mass produced ethanol. University shuttle buses and other vehicles use biodiesel. Dr. Gecol's work is funded in part by both the U.S. EPA and Washoe County.

    PURPOSE AND GOALS
Chemical engineering is unique in the engineering profession in that in requires a strong foundation in chemical principles, as well as in the physical and engineering sciences common to all branches of engineering. Because as education in chemical engineering is one of the broadest, the chemical engineer may find employment in all phases of technical operations. The chemical process industries supply society with a vast array of products, including chemicals, fuels, plastics, metals, foods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and cryogenic materials. In recent years chemical engineers have found employment in the micro-electronics industry and in the advanced materials, biochemical and biomedical engineering fields. Chemical engineers also serve society by reducing and eliminating pollution. The primary objective of the department is to prepare engineers who are well qualified to design and operate these processes. The department shares many objectives in common with other disciplines in the College of Engineering, including providing general education and professional training of the highest quality. The goals of the department include the fostering of professional ethics, standards, and practices; the development of the student's perception and creative faculties.
