THE HISTORY OF CHEERLEADING Reprinted from BCA's CHEER LEADER Magazine THE HISTORY OF CHEERLEADING Published in CHEER LEADER with kind permission from the 'Official Cheerleaders Handbook' by Randy Neil and Elaine Hart, and The World Cheerleading Association
The history of cheerleading goes as far back as the late 1880's when the first organised, recorded yell was performed on an American Campus: "Ray, Ray' Ray! TIGER, TIGER, SIS, SIS, SIS! BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! Aaaaah! PRINCETON, PRINCETON, PRINCETON!" Done in locomotive style, was the first seen and heard during a college football game. In 1884, Thomas Peebles, a graduate of Princeton University, took that yell, and the sport of [American] Football (actually derived from Rugby), to the University of Minnesota. It was from that campus that organised cheerleading came into being. Cheerleading, as we know it today, was initiated in 1898 by Johnny Campbell, an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota, who stood before the crowd at a football game and directed them in a famous and still used yell. "Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!" Johnny Campbell's innovation of cheerleading was documented in the following story that appeared in the November 12, 1898, edition of a Minnesota student publication "Ariel": "The following were nominated to lead the Yelling today: Jack (sic) Campbell, F.G. Kotlaba, M.J. Luby, Albert Armstrong of the Academics; Wickersham of the Laws; and Litzenverg of the Medics. These men would see to it that everybody leaves the park today breathless and voiceless, as this is the last game here, it ought to be a revelation to the people of Minnesota in regard to University enthusiasm.". And so cheerleading officially began on November 2, 1898.

Since 1997 more students have taken dance classes at our 2 different locations than at any other studio in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. We started as a very small studio but have grown to become the largest dance school in South Texas. We do not believe we are the best because we're the biggest. Instead, we believe we're the biggest because families think we are the best. As a parent we realize you have a choice between several different studios. All studios are not the same. We constantly renovate and improve our facilities and provide ongoing training to our staff to ensure we are always providing our students and parents with the best experience possible.

Quick clarification. I have gotten phone calls regarding cheering for an all-star team and being allowed to cheer in high school. Here is the scoop: If you cheer for an all-star gym and they compete out of the state, you are NOT allowed to do MHSAA Competitive Cheer. You ARE allowed to be a member of any other MHSAA recognized sport besides Competitive Cheer. You are allowed to do Sideline Competitive or Sideline Non-Competitive formats. There are school's that have decided to not allow All-Star Gym cheerleaders to do any form of cheerleading in the high school, however, this is not mandated by MHSAA it is merely a decision within the school. MCCA's stance on this is that we adamantly support cheerleading in high school. My recommendation would be for All-Star Gyms to encourage that if they cheer for the All-Star Gym they cheer in high school. Cheers!
