YMCA Character Development Our character shows in our behavior how we practice our values. The YMCA develops character by demonstrating and teaching the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These values, derived from Christian teachings but embraced by all the worlds major religions, form a blueprint for decision making and a moral and ethical foundation for life. The Y has been concerned with character development for more than 150 years. Methods have changed from evangelical Christianity in the organizations early years to "values clarification" in the 1960s and '70s but the organizations commitment to Christian principles has not. Today the YMCA of the USA is an active member of the Character Counts! Coalition, a consortium of youth-serving organizations dedicated to finding new ways of helping young people build good values. Topic: Best Practices of teachers for Character Education
I thought it would be nice to start a string of postings for teachers to share ideas about how they teach and model character for their students. All too often in our buildings we become isolated on our own islands and forget to share our ideas. Of course, sometimes our ideas aren't respected by our colleagues who think teaching character "is not my job." I teach social studies and have used various history situations for students to judge moral right and wrong in the decisions made people in history (i.e. Einstein and nuclear theory). I also use readings and discussions related to specific character traits. Hand-shakes at the door, a joke-a-day, goal setting and student created class rules are a few of the other things I do to help foster the development of character in the students in my classes. Does anyone else have practices they use in their classrooms that work and want to share? I know the more ideas I come across, the better I can be in my classroom for my students Scott Jones Teacher, Hazelwood West High School, Hazelwood, MO

ABSTRACT: Part of a special issue on character education. Character education in schools and school districts requires a strong leader who assumes responsibility for the program, otherwise there is a risk that the program will fade away. A character education leader must act as a visionary, missionary, consensus builder, knowledge source, standard bearer, architect, role model, risk taker, communicator, collaborator, resource provider, and evaluator.

Ed Forakern at Wickham Elementary School The article "Meeting N.A.S.P.E. Standards 5, 6, and 7: A Character Development Rubric" appeared in the spring, 1998 I.A.H.P.E.R.D. Journal. In that article, a rubric designed for intentionally teaching social development was presented as it related to Kate Wickham Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa. The school and community environment was described as well as the process of developing and implementing the rubric. This article is intended to supplement the previous one and expand on recent efforts by the Wickham staff regarding the implementation of a newly developed assessment tool, which is based on and relates directly to the rubric. With the character development rubric being in place at Wickham since 1997-98, the character development committee (consisting of representative teachers from all grade levels/subject areas) met regularly during the fall of 1998-99. It was determined that the rubric had a profound positive effect on the positive behaviors of students and character development in general. However, if someone questioned how this was known, the question could only be answered "from the heart". With that in mind, the committee developed an assessment rubric (tool) that could be used by teachers, students, and parents to assess progress relative to character development (see chart). There are three versions of the assessment, one for intermediate and upper grade students, and two for primary students. One of the primary tools integrates "I Care Rules" with core virtues.

    J. Ed Forakern
Wickham Elementary School Original Publication Information:
The article "A Character Development Rubric" appeared in the spring, 1998 I.A.H.P.E.R.D. Journal. With the recent publication of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (N.A.S.P.E.) National Standards for quality physical education, educators are challenged to thoughtfully apply these standards. Standards 5, 6, and 7 are particularly challenging in that they extend beyond the motor and cognitive domains into the seemingly nebulous domain of the affect, or the social development of our students. The remainder of this article will outline a rubric which has been successfully applied regarding the teaching of character development at Wickham Elementary School. The Wickham rubric uses the term character development which is synonymous with social development. Many parts of the rubric may be easily adapted to secondary school settings. A brief description of the Wickham school environment will be followed by initial steps used in the development of the rubric, as well as a discussion of the rubric itself. Wickham School is located in Coralville, Iowa and is part of the Iowa City Community School District. There are 25 certified teachers and approximately 400 kindergarten through sixth grade students who are organized into multi-aged teams. Wickham opened during the 1997-98 school year and the teachers met periodically during the summer of 1997 to facilitate planning for student needs.

"The twin goals of education are the character development and the intellectual development of students. It's not one without the other."
    Katy Abel
(CBS) "I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character," said Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963.
When it comes to the contents of students' characters, many parents and teachers are worried. The killings at Columbine High School and elsewhere have raised fears about kids' behavior and prompted new lessons about virtue.
Nationwide, schools are starting to teach not only reading, writing and arithmetic, but the fourth and fifth r's as well: responsibility and respect. Twelve states now require that character be taught in the classroom. Character is part of the curriculum at the Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Boston University, where Dr. King received his doctorate in 1955, the Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character helps schools put character in the curriculum.
