Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Review (Xbox)
By: Rob Semsey - "Horus" March 24th, 2005 Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (Xbox) REVIEWS PREVIEWS MOVIES ... NEWS document.write(""); document.write(""); Back so soon? Yes, it wasn’t all too long that Third Echelon operative, Sam Fisher, was smack dab in the middle of global threat by Indonesian guerilla, Suhadi Sadono in Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow . For fans of the series, seeing Sam’s weathered, stoic bust couldn’t come any sooner and nearly a year to the day, Ubisoft graces us with his presence in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
On the surface it might seem almost too soon for another SC title, but don’t worry my pessimistic gamers, Chaos Theory wasn’t rushed to market to simply capitalize on the series’ popularity. In fact, while Ubisoft’s Shanghai studio was hammering out Pandora Tomorrow, the renowned Montreal studio was busy raising the bar of the stealth action genre, yet again. You heard me right, just when you think sneakin’ around in the shadows can’t get any better, along comes Chaos Theory. Everything that previously made the Splinter Cell series so heralded is back and better than ever. The single-player campaign will twist you in knots, the versus mode has been retooled and expanded, and finally, the co-op mode is just delicious. Dust off that black cat suit; we’re goin’ in.

Insuring
Chaos Theory by Bob Murphy In a recent article , Silas Barta has expressed doubts concerning the system of private law that I describe in my pamphlet Chaos Theory . (For those of you unfortunate readers who have not yet purchased your copy, my basic framework is outlined here . If you haven't at least read this article on "Private Law," I encourage you to do so before continuing.) Although I disagree with most of Barta's article, I thank him for expressing his doubts in such a clear fashion, and encourage others to submit negative reviews of my pamphlet, in order that I may educate the class when explaining why your criticisms are unfounded. INSURABLE RISKS Unlike some critics who merely disagree with my predictions concerning law in a market anarchist society, Barta goes further and claims that I am failing to grasp the very nature of insurance itself. To refresh your memory: I propose that under market anarchy, individuals would contractually agree to the penalties they should suffer if they are convicted (by a reputable judge or arbitration agency) of a crime, and that individuals would most likely carry insurance in order for them to pay off the huge penalties associated with crimes such as murder. My proposal is thus completely analogous to our modern system of auto liability; if you crash into someone, you are liable for the damage, and your insurance picks up the tab if you can't afford to.

    Chaos Theory
The word "chaos" is sometimes taken to mean the opposite of "cosmos", in that the latter term has connotations of "order". Until the last few decades, chaotic systems have not been studied nearly as much as ordered systems, perhaps because chaotic systems are far more difficult to understand...
    What is a chaotic system?
Looking at the rising smoke from a cigarette illustrates some of the differences between ordered and chaotic systems. Initially the smoke rises in a smooth upward flow (laminar flow), which breaks down a few inches above the tip of the cigarette into a disordered, turbulent motion(turbulent flow). This is an example of a transition from an ordered system into a chaotic one. A stream of water flowing out of an appropriately adjusted faucet exhibits similar behaviour, which is ubiquitous in a host of phenonomena, both man-made and natural. The weather systems of the atmosphere (which are intertwined with the heat and mass flows in the oceans) are chaotic. A system of more than two bodies orbiting under each other under their mutual gravitational attraction is also chaotic, by extension the entire solar system is a chaotic!
One non-technical definition of a chaotic system goes as follows: A chaotic system is one in which a tiny change can have a huge effect. Thus the oft heard statement that a butterfly in China can cause a hurricane in the Atlantic. What makes the situation even more difficult is that we have only recently begun to forge the mathematical tools necessary to study these problems. As usual, some of the seminal works on chaos were performed by physicists of the former USSR, whose work received scant attention until recently; although today, chaotic systems are being extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically.

Well, he didn't have to ask me twice! I was soon put in touch with the director, Tom Leslie , and when he asked what I had in mind, I decided to go on a limb. I told him I wanted to match the power and intensity of the wind orchestra with an electric guitar. He responded without hesitation, expressing his excitement and enthusiasm for the idea. In this piece, I wanted to fuse progressive/hard rock intensity with classical sophistication. I wanted to blur the line between something precise and mathematical and something primal and visceral. And I wanted pay homage to a some of my musical influences: Rush, Beethoven, Metallica, J.S. Bach, Led Zeppelin, Shostakovich, Iron Maiden, Igor Stravinsky, King Crimson, George Lynch, Augustin Barrios-Mangore, John Petrucci (Dream Theatre), Frank Zappa, Anton Webern, and Steve Vai. There are numerous improvisational sections, which afford the soloist a great deal of freedom for interpretation (herein lies the "Chaos"). In performance, the ensemble's rhythm, intonation and articulation should be tight; but far more importantly, the interpretation must be aggressive and ferocious. Chaos Theory can be performed in its entirety, or the third movement can be programmed by itself.

Main July 25, 2005 chaos theory
You can see the evidence of time passing in the forest. There are stories everywhere. It is summer moving through it's cycles and as I walk I count the changes. The grass is higher, up to my waist. The bullrushes are tall and brown, like big hotdogs on sticks. The milkweeds are finished blooming and the pods are large and filled with seeds, (as a child my grandmother would dry the pods out and paint the insides with nailpolish, her own strange decorating invention, I remember being amazed that there could be other exciting applications for the bright pink polish.) The apple tree limbs are weighed down by fruit like old men wearing heavy coats. I crunch over discarded apples with my shoes and listen as they make a cracking sound. The cure for all that ails you can always be found in a long walk. One of my favourite teachers told me as much many years ago. If you have a problem just start out in any direction and keep walking until a solution or a feeling of weightless drifts in. I go to the woods to be released from all of the weight of daily life. The worries about money, the leaky pump, the waiting to hear if a manuscript is accepted (or rejected), the bills, the missing, the procrastinating, the insecurities that plague me, the leaving. and I walk. I am wearing my brown cordoroy pants and they make a swishing sound as I go. Swish, swish. You just keep going. Until a shift starts to happen.

    Introduction to Chaos Theory
``God plays dice with the universe,'' is [Joseph] Ford's answer to Einstein's famous question. ``But they're loaded dice. And the main objective of physics now is to find out by what rules were they loaded and how can we use them for our own ends.'' [ , p.314,] Chaos brings to mind images of complete randomness, of disorder and anarchy. It is a messy room, a mob rushing down a city street and a swarm of bees. In 1986, at a conference on mathematical chaos held by the Royal Society in London, mathematicians were asked to define the ``chaos'' that had become the buzzword for their hot research area. After much deliberation, they offered the following: Stochastic behavior occurring in a deterministic system. [ , p.17,] As definitions go, this one is particularly constipated and quite far from fostering any intuition about the subject. In Stewart's Does God Play Dice?, he claims knowledge of the etymology of stochastic in the statement, ``The Greek word

We can’t waste time thinking about where we have been, either 20 years ago or yesterday, places like Kabul or Baghdad, such a mess, just not photogenic or fun anymore. It’s on to a new scene, the next eye-grabbing trailer. It’s all about entertainment anyway. The great minds are constantly working for us the viewer, to keep us munching the popcorn and shushing the guys sitting next to us so we can enjoy the movie. From the well-staged briefings in the new CENTCOM theater, to the excited and on-the-team reporters, pleasantly rumpled and doe-eyed from another night in bed with the troops, to the deck of cards we are now shuffling with the Iraqi 55 most wanted, it’s all about fun. Please pay no attention to the ragged civilians or our tattered Constitution ailing in the background.

Has chaos theory found any useful application in the social sciences?
    Allison Brown
    Chicago, Illinois
Blake LeBaron of Brandeis University, is one of the leading researchers investigating the role of chaos theory in economic systems. He wrote in to expand on the brief reply to this question that we previously posted. Overview: It has been more than 10 years since ideas from deterministic chaos began appearing in the social science literature. This interdisciplinary spread of ideas was accompanied by expectations that many major problems in the social sciences could be easily 'solved' using chaos-inspired techniques. It is probably true that many early expectations for chaos were not fulfilled. Its role has not faded completely away, however. Important ideas and methods have been adapted from the dynamical systems literature. I believe that chaos has had an impact, though in different ways from those predicted at the onset. One of several key ideas in chaos is that simple models can generate very rich (and random-looking) dynamics. Implicit in some early work in the social sciences was a hope that simple chaotic models of social phenomena could be matched up with many of the near-random and difficult-to-explain empirical patterns that are observed. This early goal has proved elusive.

It is perhaps hard for Americans to understand the U.S. occupation of Iraq in the context of globalization. But Iraq today is clearly the epicenter of that trend, and in this context, chaos is king. Here, military force was used to seize control of the world's most important commodity: oil. And that's only the beginning. Corporate prospectors allied with the United States search the country like safari hunters on elephants for any opportunity to profit from Iraq's misery"that's how conspicuous they are. Meanwhile, inside Baghdad's green zone, where the U.S. occupation headquarters are located, their innocuous-looking counterparts draft regulations for privatizing everything from health care to prisons. It is chaos that makes this whole system possible. Without the chaos, Iraqis would not allow the country to be sold off wholesale, or allow the U.S. troops to remain after the June 30th "transfer" of sovereignty.
