Chaos Theory and Education
External Link: Dynamic Functions by Michael Lorenzen The universe is a chaotic place. It is full of uncertainty and it can be difficult to predict exactly what is going to happen at any given time be it the present or the far future. Scientists and mathematicians have developed a theory to explain this phenomenon. It is called chaos theory and it is highly relevant to the field of teaching. Education is an uncertain endeavor. Not only is it difficult to exactly predict what will happen in the class each day, it is nearly impossible to ascertain what the best course of education for any given person or class may be. The reasons for this are simple. Education is connected to the rest universe and as such is fully subject to the chaos that naturally exists in reality. Chaos has been contemplated by mankind for several millennia. The concept can be seen in early religious philosophy (Hinduism has believed in chaos from its inception) to the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh. Isaac Newton also considered the nature of chaos in the universe. A modern view of chaos theory was written by Gollub and Solomon. They wrote (282), "A chaotic system is defined as one that shows sensitivity to initial conditions. That is, any uncertainty in the initial state of the given system, no matter how small, will lead to rapidly growing errors in any effort to predict the future behavior…In other words, the system is chaotic. Its behavior can be predicted only if the initial conditions are known to an infinite degree of accuracy, which is impossible."

Search Chaos Theory Chaos Theory is the name mathematicians have come up with to describe the very complex way the world works. Much of mathematics invented up until now has been "linear", or related to a line. You could make equations about it, and figure out the answer pretty easily. But there were some areas that just couldn't be explained, like weather patterns, ocean currents, or the actions of cells. There were too many things going on to keep track of with linear equations. It almost seemed as if they were random, or "chaotic". Chaos theory is a way to mathematically describe and predict these types of events. This type of math would not be possible without computers, because the calculations are so huge and tedious. But computers are perfect for that task. Inspiring and educating people about Fractals, chaos theory and the interconnectedness of complex systems.
http://www.fractalfoundation.org
...is to educate and inspire people about mathematics, art, science, chaos theory and nature. We focus particularly on efforts to reach young people with our educational programs , and we also connect with adults through our scholarship and art sponsorship programs.
We believe that understanding the Principles of Chaos Theory - which are so beautifully illustrated by fractals - is essential to harmonious and sustainable living. No longer is it safe to assume that the cultural, economic and ecological systems in which we live are discrete, linear, disconnected. Rather, we must begin teaching ourselves and our children that the World is a non-linear, unpredictable, interconnected complex system. This radical new paradigm, only recently realized in the new science of Chaos Theory, is still virtually absent from conventional education. The Fractal Foundation seeks to bring these new ways of thinking into the mainstream.
The Fractal Foundation educates people about Chaos Theory and Fractals and encourages participation in art, mathematics, and computer technology by:
  • Providing educational materials, presentations and software to school children (K-12), teaching them to explore fractals themselves.

If that enabled us to predict the succeeding situation with the same approximation , that is all we require, and we should say that the phenomenon had been predicted, that it is governed by laws. Chaos in a Nutshell Chaologists contend that not only in certain mathematical constructs, but also in the real world, there exist orderly systems in disguise, or chaos. Because the definition of chaos is so unwieldy, I have tried to summarize its main characteristics in the following table: what it isn't what it is is not erratic is erratic-looking, but is in fact ordered is not dependent on external variables is entirely self-generated is not the result of error is dependent upon the initial conditions, or "control parameter" is not predictable in the long term is fairly accurately predictable in the short term is noninvertible, i.e., one cannot determine a chaotic system's prior history is the result of a deterministic process, i.e., can be expressed as a mathematical equation with a given initial condition is not found in linear systems, i.e., the plotted equation is a straight line is found only in nonlinear systems, i.e., the plotted equation is not a straight line is found in feedback systems where the past affects the present and the present affects the future Back to top Recipe for Chaos Mathematically, chaos can be achieved by the simple iteration of certain equations. The recipe for chaos in the real world, however, is still in theory stage. Chaologists propose several possible causes of chaos:

Chaos
We borrow a working definition for chaos theory from Dr. Stephen Kellert: The Qualitative Study of Unstable Aperiodic Behavior in Deterministic Nonlinear dynamical systems. I should briefly dissect some of these terms to better describe what is and what is not chaotic in nature:
Chaos is qualitative in that it seeks to know the general character of a system's long-term behavior, rather than seeking numerical predictions about a future state. What characteristics will all solutions of a system exhibit? How does this system change from exhibiting one behavior to another?
Chaotic systems are unstable since they tend not to resist any outside disturbances but instead react in significant ways. In other words, they do not shrug off external influences but are partly navigated by them. The variables describing the state of a system do not demonstrate a regular repetition of values and are therefore aperiodic. This unstable aperiodic behavior is highly complex since it never repeats and continues to show the effects of the disturbance(s). These systems are deterministic because they are made up of few, simple differential equations, and make no references to implicit chance mechanisms. This is not to be completely equated with the metaphysical or philosophical idea of determinism (that human choices could be predetermined as well).

The CHAOS FAQ
by Ralph H. Abraham
Q1: What is dynamical systems theory?
Dynamical systems theory is the branch of mathematics devoted to the motions of systems which evolve according to simple rules. It was developed originally in the 17th century by Newton to model the motions of our solar system, evolving under the rules of his new theory of universal gravitation.
Q2: What is chaos theory?
Chaos theory is a further development of dynamical systems theory which focusses on highly complex motions called chaotic motions. These were discovered originally by Poincare around 1890 in his unsuccesful efforts to prove the stability of the solar system.
Q3: What is a chaotic motion?
By the broadest definition, every motion more complicated than fixed (no motion) or periodic (cyclicly repeating) motion is considered chaotic.
Q4: What do you mean by the chaos revolution?
Chaos theory was not known by this name until 1975 or so. For almost a century it was a minor undercurrent of dynamical systems theory, a topic of pure mathematics unknown to the scientfic community. After the computer revolution, chaotic motions became visible on computer graphic screens, and an awareness of their significance began to spread among scientists. In 1971 this awareness materialized as a technical report published in a journal of theoretical physics, and the chaos revolution was on. It took about 15 years more to sweep throughout the sciences and reach public awareness. All this aounts to a major paradigm shift, as chaotic behavior moved from mystery to familiarity.

The Beauty of Chaos is in its deceptive appearance. Scientific chaos looks disorganized, and can even pass the statistical tests for randomness. Despite this, chaos has an underlying order that can even be predicted in the short term. Delve into some chaos theory while you're here. The Art of Chaos Chaos begins with logic, the formalization of a mathematical equation. Art, too, begins with logic. Formalize the rules of logic into a mathematical formula, plot the result, and you will have created a fractal. Add to this self-similar design the element of human consciousness, and you will have created once-only chaos art. (In war great events are caused by small things.) This sounds uncannily like Lorenz' butterfly effect, which pop chaologists love to discuss in the first chapters of their books, because the concept is so easy to get their brains around. Lorenz, of course, was referring to weather, and Caesar, as always, was referring to war. But both nailed a key point in chaos theory: everything depends on that initial small event, or control parameter. Whether or not you believe that Cicero flapping his lips in ancient Rome can cause your webmaster to break out in a rash in present day Los Angeles, I bring you the fun side of

Chaos
What is Chaos?
Part of the problem with explaining chaos theory is that the word "chaos" has different meanings. The normal everyday meaning of the word is "a condition or place of great disorder or confusion" , which sounds similar to the meaning of randomness: "having no specific pattern" . However, when we use the word chaos in a mathematical or scientific sense, it means something very different. I find that the most common mistake beginners make is associating the everyday meaning of chaos with the mathematical meaning. Most academic institutions will refer to chaos by a different name such as "non-linear dynamics" (don't bother trying to figure out why they would call it that if you don't already know). However, most people are more familiar with the term chaos math and I think it sounds more interesting so I will use it throughout this page. For starters, a chaotic system is not a random system . A chaotic system sometimes SEEMS random if you do not recognize that it is chaotic. For example, a roulette wheel is a chaotic system (trust me, it's not random, I'll explain why later). If you look at a fairly normal system such as a ball bouncing straight up and down against the ground, and you want to find out how high this ball will be after a certain amount of time, you would want to find out at what height the ball is dropped from, the strength of gravity, etc. and then you could easily plug these numbers into equations and then get the right answer. This is what happens in theory. In practice, since you will have to actually make measurements, what might happen is that your measurement might be a millimeter too high. If you did this, what would happen to the value that you would calculate with the slightly incorrect value? You would get an answer that was extremely close to what the ball actually did. A slight error in measurement is barely even noticeable.
