Programs of Study
The Department of Physics offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and both thesis and non-thesis M.S. tracks are available. Usually a Ph.D. student devotes the first year mostly to basic courses, and takes the qualifying exam at the first January following his arrival. Students should become involved with a research project by the second year, and after passing the qualifying exam, must present the beginnings of a research project to a committee within six months. This presentation will normally turn into a dissertation, but the student is not bound to it and can switch to another project or even another area of research later.
Experimental Research
Experimental research here is in the areas of astrophysics, nonlinear phenomena and chaos, optics, optical oceanography, and solid-state physics. Theoretical research is in elementary particles, environmental optics, plasmas, nonlinear phenomena and chaos, and solid-state physics. In addition to the research projects, the activities of research groups include seminars where both visitors and the department faculty and graduate students present results of their research.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Electrons in Mesoscopic Nanostructures

Quantum dots, quantum wires, and heterojunction layers are of great interest for potential novel electronic devices. We studied the role of nonlinear dynamics in the transport of electrons through various mesoscopic nanostructures, including both vertical and lateral semiconductor superlattices and double-barrier resonance tunneling diodes focusing on effects created by the presence of external driving by both dc- and ac-electric and dc-magnetic fields. Our results include predicting (1) deterministic chaos in the electron current, which would appear experimentally as a substantial increase in the effective noise of the device and (2) symmetry-breaking (i.e., the development of a dc bias in response to a purely ac applied electric field or to a suitably aligned dc magnetic field). We are verifying these predictions through collaborations with several experimental groups.

Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamical Systems
One of the two major focuses of the current research within our group is chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems. Familiar examples of this phenomenon are weak turbulence in fluid flow and the general unpredictability of the weather. However, chaos is also quite common in solid state/condensed matter systems, laser/optical systems, electronic devices, plasmas, etc., as well as chemistry, biology, physiology, economics, and many other fields. While the general goal of our research is to improve our understanding of chaos and chaotic phenomena, our current research in this area is focused on controlling or eliminating chaos. Physicists are generally interested in studying the properties of materials and devices under increasingly more extreme conditions, in which case, the nonlinear properties of the material or device become more and more important. If the conditions become sufficiently extreme, (e.g., very strong driving or very high applied fields), the behavior of the system will finally become chaotic. Beyond this point, the chaotic response of the system makes it very difficult to study its properties. However, recent research has shown that, in many cases, it may be possible to eliminate this chaotic behavior by making very small variations in the driving force or the applied field. Furthermore, the chaotic behavior may be replaced by any of a variety of steady-state or periodic behaviors. This ability to select from a variety of behaviors of the system may mean that the occurrence of chaos is actually an advantage. At present, chaos can be controlled in this manner only for very simple systems. However, we are working on ways to extend this approach to systems of much greater complexity (i.e., to the level of complexity found in real physical systems).

Master of Science in Physics - General Information

The MSc Programme in Physics Physics is concerned with problems that range from minute particles to the universe as a whole. Quantitative methods are used to analyse the apparent complexity of the system in which we live. For this reason, the methods and results from this science are often applied to other fields such as Chemistry, Biology or Engineering. Graduates of the MSc in Physics will have experienced a balanced but diverse period of postgraduate studies and will be qualified to find employment in a wide range of professions. Physics graduates do not only find employment in universities or research laboratories but will frequently be found in computer companies, management consultants or in the field of telecommunications. The MSc in Physics at the University of Stuttgart is taught entirely in English and takes two years (four semesters) including a one-year thesis. Upon completion of this programme you will be awarded a degree which is equivalent to the German degree of "Diplomphysiker" and a qualified graduate of this programme will be entitled to continue to study towards a doctoral degree in Physics at a German university without having to fulfil additional academic requirements.
