Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science
Mathematics, physics, computer science and statistics are essential components of the curriculum at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. At the dawn of the 21st century, these disciplines stand as the bedrock of scientific and technological understanding. For this reason, all students at USP take courses in these fields in preparation for their career goals. In addition, some students elect to take minors in these areas.
Mathematics is the language of the sciences. It helps chemists quantify the reactions they are observing. It offers pharmacologists and toxicologists ways of characterizing the body's reaction to substances. It enables epidemologists to construct models of the spread of disease. In almost every scientific discipline, math provides methodical and reproducible descriptions of phenomena.
At USP, we offer courses in a vast range of mathematical subjects, from pre-calculus to differential equations, and from mathematical modelling to complexity theory. Mathematicians at the university study a wide variety of topics, from exploring the structures of connected graphs to tackling non-invasive ways of predicting the onset of cataracts. Undergraduates have ample opportunity to join faculty research projects, and gain a jump start on their chosen careers.

David Wolfe, Chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy
Hideo Mabuchi, California Institute of Technology
Information dynamics in cavity QED Cavity QED provides a unique experimental realization of an observable and controllable open quantum system with nontrivial intrinsic dynamics. In this talk I will discuss the development of practical methods for quantum feedback control in a cavity QED setting and consider the future application of such techniques to investigating the interaction of measurement, dissipation, and dynamical complexity in open quantum systems.
Dr. Mabuchi will be at UNM from 4-28 through 5-1.
Coffee break and informal discussion
A. S. Holevo, Steklov Mathematical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences
The capacity of a quantum channel with general signal states It is shown that the capacity of a classical-quantum channel with arbitrary (possibly mixed) states equals the maximum of the entropy bound with respect to all a priori distributions. This completes the recent result of Hausladen, Jozsa, Schumacher, Westmoreland, and Wootters, who proved the equality for the pure-state channel.

Online, Free, Physics Courses - Taking the Classroom Home
Want to increase your knowledge of physics? Whether you're interested but completely untrained, a high school student or physics major, there are online courses that will expand your knowledge and horizons. I have attempted to collect the best at all levels here. Turn your Computer into a physics classroom. These courses cover various topics in physics at a variety of levels. I have attempted to gauge the appropriate background levels of experience necessary.

Recent Up a category Prof. Gene Smith's Astronomy Tutorial Comprehensive tutorial covering everything from "the scale of the universe" to dark matter. Our Nuclear Era This course examines nuclear proliferation from a wide variety of perspectives. In 1898, Pierre and Marie Curie discovered two materials that emitted radiation that they named radium and polonium. During the next decade, science discovered the existence of the atom. Scientists such as Ernest Rutherford, James Chadwick, and Albert Einstein continued the study of the structure of the atom.

THE TOP PHYSICS STORIES OF 2003. The first three on our list concern the sharpening of our understanding of the big bang era, evidence for new quark groupings, and progress in manipulating quantum gases. At the largest size scale, new observations from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), the Sloan Digital Survey and other telescopes have reduced the uncertainties in the values of such cosmic parameters as the Hubble constant, the age of the universe, and the fractions of total energy vested in the form of dark and luminous matter ( www.aip.org/enews/physnews/2003/split/624-1.html www.aip.org/enews/physnews/2003/split/659-1.html ). Going to the opposite extreme, at the level of elementary matter, new data indicate that quarks needn't appear only in clumps of three (baryons) or two (mesons). Work at SLAC (US) and KEK (Japan) hint that quarks might also exist in "tetraquark" states ( http://www.aip.org/enews/physnews/2003/split/643-1.html

Objective
The objective of graduate work in physics is to prepare the student for continued professional and scholarly development as a physicist. The Physics MS Degree Programs are designed to give the student advanced training in all fundamental areas of physics through formal courses and the options of some degree of specialization or participation in original research in one of a variety of projects directed by the faculty. The Doctor of Philosophy in Physics and Applied Physics Program combines the traditional elements of a science doctoral program with courses in specifically applied topics and internship in a technological environment. It is designed to produce highly trained professionals with a broad perspective of the subject which may prepare them equally well for careers in academic or in government or industrial laboratories. Current research in the department is predominantly in the areas of condensed matter physics, materials science, and high-energy physics and includes a wide range of theoretical work in solid state physics and experimentation in laser physics, optics, positron physics, solid state and surface physics, and high-energy physics.
