Etienne Brule Etienne (ay TYEHN) Brule (broo LAY) (1592?-1633), a noted French adventurer, was the first European to reach Lake Ontario. He arrived there in 1615 while on a mission for Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer who founded the Canadian city of Quebec. Brule may have been the first European to see Lakes Erie, Huron, and Superior.
Brule was born in Champigny, France, near Paris. He probably came to Quebec with Champlain in 1608. In 1610, Champlain sent Brule to live among the Algonquin Indians and learn their language and way of life. Brule returned the next year and later visited the Huron Indians near Lake Huron.

The French and English in the New World
By 1600, the Spanish had explored, and established colonies in, Central and South America and parts of North America. Spain tried to claim all of North America, but the French and English set up their own colonies and explored much of the continent themselves.
During the 1600's, the French and English began to found colonies in what are now Canada and the United States. The French and English, like the Spanish before them, unknowingly introduced smallpox and other new diseases into the areas that they controlled. As before, many Indians died from these diseases. The French and English also traded with the Indians for the skins of beaver and other animals. Traders learned much about the land from the Indians, who frequently acted as interpreters and guides.

Samuel de Champlain
By Mary Lynn Bushong In the great race to explore the New World, Spain was in the lead with a large foothold, and France did not want to get too far behind. The goal was to explore and settle lands that they had claimed more than sixty years before. To do that job, the king of France chose Samuel de Champlain.
Champlain was born in 1567, in the small town of Brouage, France. Little is know of his family or his early life. His father was a ship captain, but he actually received much of his seaman's training from his uncle. Trained as a navigator, he sailed with his uncle, taking Spanish soldiers from France to Spain. Champlain earned command of his own vessel in 1599, which he used for the next two years to go back and forth from the West Indies, Central America, and Panama. While he was at Panama, he thought a canal system might be cut across the isthmus, shortening travel time to the Pacific.
Around 1601, he returned to France and was given a pension by Henry IV. Then in 1603, he was invited to go along on an expedition to explore France's possessions in the New World. They also hoped to find a good place to establish a colony. On May 24 of that year, they anchored at Tadoussal on the St. Lawrence. They took a small boat as far as the rapids above Montreal and back and then explored both sides of the St. Lawrence River as far as the Gaspe Peninsula before returning to France.

After serving in France under Henry of Navarre (King Henry IV) in the religious wars, Champlain was given command of a Spanish fleet sailing to the West Indies, Mexico, and the Isthmus of Panama. He described this three-year tour to the French king in Bref Discours (1859). In 1603 he made his first voyage to New France as a member of a fur-trading expedition. He explored the St. Lawrence River as far as the rapids at Lachine and described his voyage in Des Sauvages With the sieur de Monts , who had a monopoly of the trade of the region, Champlain returned in 1604 to found a colony, which was landed at the mouth of the St. Croix River. In 1605 the colony moved across the Bay of Fundy to Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal, N.S.), and in the next three years Champlain explored the New England coast south to Martha's Vineyard, discovering Mt. Desert Island and most of the larger rivers of Maine and making the first detailed charts of the coast. After the sieur de Monts's privileges had been revoked, the colony had to be abandoned, and through the efforts of Champlain a new one was established on the St. Lawrence River. In 1608 in the ship Le Don de Dieu

He became one of the most important explorers in North American and French history and mapped much of Canada and the northeastern United States. In 1603, Champlain sailed to France on Francois Grave Du Pont's expedition. The pair and their crew sailed west through the Gulf of St. Lawrence and into the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers. They also explored misty Gaspe' Peninsula of Quebec. After returning to France, Champlain decided to sail back to Quebec in the hopes of discovering the Northwest Passage, a mythical waterway that would serve as a shortcut from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Champlain returned to Quebec in 1604 on Pierre de Mont's expedition. For the next three years, Champlain explored much of the coast of Nova Scotia, the Bay of Fundy and the coasts of Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Champlain started his first colony in the New World on Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605. In 1608, Champlain started the first permanent French colony in the New World at Quebec (City) on the St. Lawrence River. The colony was started as a fur-trading center. Unfortunately for the French settlers, they were not used to the bitter Canadian winter. Of the 32 settlers in the colony, only nine survived the winter. More colonists would be sent from France to reinforce the colony.
