Population Characteristics
The estimated population of Chad in 2005 was 9,826,419. The overall population density is 8 persons per sq km (20 per sq mi). Some 75 percent of the people live in rural areas, and most of the population is concentrated in the south. The population may be divided into two main groups: a Muslim population in the northern and eastern portions of the country and the non-Muslims of black African origin in the southern regions. The Muslim population includes both nomadic Arabs and sedentary non-Arab peoples. The largest group among the non-Muslims is the Sara tribe. Chad culture draws most heavily on the ethnic heritage of its black peoples, but Islamic and French influences are much in evidence.

Climate
Chad may be divided into three climatic zones. The northern region is characterized by hot and arid climatic conditions and is almost entirely rainless. The central region has a hot season from March to July, a wet season from May to November with precipitation averaging 250 to 750 mm, and a dry and cold season from September to April. In the country's south precipitation averages 1,145 mm from July to September.
Fauna/Flora
For the most part, the country is characterized by savannah vegetation with typical shrubs and pastureland. The southern part of the country is the most fertile region in Chad and it effectively feeds the whole country. The south is also the region where most of the country's fauna can be found, including elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, ostriches, lions, and buffaloes. Lake Chad region abounds in bird life, whereas the desert region provides a suitable habitat for a number of reptile species.

Rebel activity continues in the Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti region in the country's north, which has been extensively landmined. The borders with Sudan and Libya are subject to closure without notice. With one of the most painful histories in Africa, Chad is a nation with its foundations built on the precipice of conflict. A harsh climate, geographic remoteness, poor resource endowment and lack of infrastructure have combined to create a weak economy suceptible to political turmoil.

    • It is believed that if too many eyes look at a tree that it will either die or not produce fruit. This is why most people sitting under a tree in a village are not looking up into the tree as they talk, but rather out in the distance. In the villages, it is the popular belief that if you take some of the dry matter from the corner of a dog's eye and put it in your own, that you will see demons. Please, do not ever try this (it is not safe, hygienic, or wise), but if you do, you are advised to try only one eye at first and to have soap and water at hand to wash it out in a hurry if the experience proves too scary for you. You have been warned! Because the weather year-round is often sunny, we actually consider rainy days to be "good weather", and an extended period of sunny days (especially during the rainy season) as "bad weather".

A Crash Course in Chadian Culture
  • When communicating a serious matter, foreigners sometimes have the (unconscious) tendency to laugh or smile to ease the tension. This is seen as extremely inappropriate to a Chadian. Both the person communicating a problem and the listener should demonstrate concern by the seriousness of their expression and their intent listening. Listening may not and usually does not involve direct eye contact. It is appropriate for the listener to look past you, lean back or cross his arms, especially when listening to a teaching or a sermon. None of this communicates disinterest to the Chadian. It is more a matter of facial expression. In personal sharing, the person listening to a problem will often lean forward and look at the floor. Never talk to a Chadian while staring him or her in the eyes; he might think you are mad at them. Conflict resolution: It is usually appropriate to make an appointment to see someone to discuss a serious matter. Mediators are employed in many situations where the foreigner would not necessarily think to invite a third party: marital disputes, disagreements between neighbours, etc. It is only appropriate in business to contact the person of equal status/position to yourself. You do not go "over someone's head" directly, without talking to the person first. If you are Christians, it would be appropriate to follow the Biblical instructions in Matt 18:15-17 of taking a second person with you to confront and discuss a problem.

People of Chad Chad is made up of numerous ethnic groups. While Arabs are important in the north and east, Africans dominate in the south. Muslims make up about 59 percent of the population. About 17 percent of the people are Christians while most of the remaining population adheres to traditional religions. The official languages are French and Arabic, but numerous other African languages are also spoken. Chadic languages, especially Hausa, are spoken in the Lake Chad area. Flag of Chad The flag of Chad has three equal vertical bands of blue (towards the hoist side), yellow, and red. It is similar to the flag of Romania as well as the flags of Andorra and Moldova, both of which have a national coat of arms centered in the yellow band.

Economy of Chad The economy of Chad is mainly governed by agriculture, which is practiced by some 83 percent of the labor force, who are also engaged in animal husbandry, forestry, and fishing. In 1992, national budget figures showed revenues of $120 million and expenditures of $363 million. In 2000 imports were $290 million, and exports were $183 million.
