Tips on Web Publishing for ThinkQuest for Tomorrow's Teachers By David Stoloff, Professor and Education Department Chair, Eastern Connecticut State University Please send suggestions, ideas, and advice for the next version of this guide to David Stoloff I invite students and faculty members participating in the ThinkQuest for Tomorrow's Teachers (T3P) to comment and correct these observations on web publishing of T3P collaborative projects. My goal is to develop a step-by-step process for students who are not at a high comfort level with educational technology and procedures for web page development and publication. I developed these observations in part after an experience learning with five teams of three students each in by Dr. Shirley Ernst's graduate Children's Literature course at Eastern Connecticut State University in early December 2001 please add here - and two teams of four students in my Computers in the Classroom and the Curriculum during January 2002. My thanks to Dr. Ernst and the students in both classes for their reactions to these procedures. Step 1 - Initiating the Teams http://t3.preservice.org/projectlab/

Publishing Pages with PUT
First published in Apache Week issue 59 (4th April 1997).
How Apache Supports GET, POST and PUT
When a browser requests a normal page from a server, it uses the "GET" method. This is the standard way to get back information from a server. The information itself may come from a static page, a CGI program, a server-side include page or any other source handled by the server. By definition it is safe for a browser to obtain a page by GET as many times as it likes - it will never cause any permanent action on the server (such as entering a product order). To perform a permanent action on the server, the "POST" method is used. This method must be handled by a program or script, and the browser should not re-request a POST page without getting the user to confirm it. This POST method is used when a script or program requires a lot of form data input or when the request makes the server perform a real action such as entering an order. The "PUT" method is similar to the POST method in that it can cause information to be updated on the server. The difference is that the POST method is normally handed a script which is explicitly named by the resource (that is, something that already exists), while a PUT request could be directed at a resource which does not (yet) exist. Another difference is that the POST method can be used in response to a form, while the PUT method can only contain a single data item. The PUT method is suited for publishing pages.

    Getting Started with Web Publishing
    Regular HTML
As a user with a shell account on Idiom, you can publish your own Web pages. For simple pages, just create a directory in your home directory called public_html. cd mkdir public_html chmod a+x . public_html Your home page will be accessed as http://www.idiom.com/~LOGIN where LOGIN is your account login name. Your home page lives in the file public_html/index.html To upload files, ftp to idiom.com and log in as yourself (LOGIN), not as anonymous . Change directories to and then upload your files. Once you've got a home page up, please let us know so that we can make a link to it.
    File Permissions
The default file permissions allow every user on the system to read all of your web pages. The web server runs as the user httpd and in the group httpd . All Idiom users are in the group users . Your web pages must be accessible to the web server in order for them to be served. To make them inaccessable to the rest of idiom's user community, remove group read permission on files and group execute permission on directories: chmod g-r file ... chmod g-x directory ...

    CGI Scripts
CGI scripts are used to process Web forms, create dynamic Web pages, and perform a variety of Web related tasks. The instructions on these pages focus on CGI scripts that process Web forms. CGI scripts are written in programming languages. The language used depends on the kind of computer running the Web server, the preference of the CGI programmer, and the purpose of the script. Most TeamWeb scripts are written in Perl for use on the ITS Unix Web servers. NOTE: Some of these pages are designed for the advanced HTML publisher. While they do not assume any programming ability, if you are not comfortable with simple Unix commands and writing HTML code, we recommend you review Basic UNIX and HTML Basics before learning to use CGI scripts.
