Cervical cancer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix . Worldwide, it is the second most common cancer of women. It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts utilizing the Pap smear . Most scientific studies point to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as a necessary pre-requisite for development of cervical cancer. Treatment is with surgery (including cryosurgery ) in early stages and chemotherapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease.

The early stages of cervical cancer may be completely asymptomatic Vaginal bleeding , contact bleeding or (rarely) a vaginal mass may indicate the presence of malignancy. In advanced disease, metastases may be present in the abdomen lungs or elsewhere. The possibility to identify premalignant changes on a cervical smear has made screening the major cause for referral of women with possible cervical neoplasia. In many countries, women are advised to have a regular

From Our Sponsors f you're one of the millions of women who regularly visit their obstetricians and gynecologists for routine pelvic examinations and Pap tests, then you are part of the good news about cervical cancer. This disease is almost 100 percent curable when it is diagnosed in its early stages and treated promptly. Pap tests are the single most effective method for identifying irregularities in cervical cells that could develop into cancer. Since the 1940s, when the Pap test was first introduced, the death rate for cervical cancer has declined by nearly 75 percent. The battle against cervical cancer is far from won, however. Approximately 13,500 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. As many as 4,500 of these women will die from the disease because it was diagnosed too late for effective treatment. Sadly, many of these deaths could be prevented with regular screening and early treatment. Cervical cancer is not as common as other cancers that affect women. Breast cancer is far more prevalent, striking approximately 180,000 women in 1992. In the same year, more than 20,000 women developed ovarian cancer, and nearly 12,000 women died from it.

Next: Introduction
A High Resolution Ultrasonic Imaging System for the Detection of Cervical Cancer
Abstract:
A digital scanning system for the ultrasonic detection of cervical cancer has been developed. The acoustic transducer is a high frequency (30 MHZ) wide band single element PVDF transducer. Pulse-echo traces are recorded at up to 2048 angular positions at a speed of 16 revolutions per second. The high frequency signals are continuously digitized at 200 Msamples/s with a resolution of 10 bits. A processing unit converts the data into a high resolution 'radial' image in real-time and stores the digitized RF-data for further processing. The scanner supports two modi, a real-time search mode and an off-line characterization mode. The first mode is to obtain a basic impression of the cervix. After selection of a region of interest, the second mode uses seismic processing tools for image enhancement and tissue characterization. In this mode use is being made of residual focussing to obtain a high depth-independent resolution and the resulting high resolution image is analyzed by linear Radon transformation for angle dependent information.

Research, Interests.
I am a research scientist at Lake Biwa Research Institute, Japan. My research involves the automatic detection and classification of freshwater cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in Lake Biwa, using image processing and pattern recognition techniques. Previously, I was a researcher and part-time lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Queensland, Australia. I was a member of CSSIP's Medical Diagnostics group, undertaking research in the area of Pap Smear analysis and classification. Specifically, my interest was in feature extraction and classification of cell nuclei, using self-adaptive, multi-scale texture analysis. This new technique, which directly targets discriminatory information in texture images, is introduced in my PhD thesis

Human Papillomavirus and Cervical Cancer By Noel McIntosh, MD, ScD Background The Virus How HPV Induces Cancer Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer ... Printer-friendly version (242k, Adobe Acrobat)
Background
It is estimated that for every 1 million women infected, 10% (about 100,000) will develop precancerous changes in their cervical tissue (dysplasia). Of these, about 8% (8,000 women) will develop early cancer limited to the outer layers of the cervical cells (carcinoma in situ [CIS]) and roughly 1,600 will develop invasive cancer unless the precancerous lesions and CIS are detected and treated. In addition to cervical disease, there is increasing evidence that people with HPV who engage in anal intercourse may be at high risk for precancerous anal lesions as well as squamous cell cancer. For example, among homosexual men, about 60% of those who are seronegative for HIV carry the HPV virus, while nearly 95% of seropositive men have HPV (Moscicke et al 1999). Moreover, they have been found to carry the same types of genital papilloma viruses (e.g., types 16 and 18) that cause cervical cancer. Finally, women with active infection can transfer the virus to their newborn (vertical transmission) during delivery, which can result in papilloma virus infection in the neonate and possible subsequent laryngeal papillomatosis (Cason, Rice and Best 1998). Currently there is no treatment for HPV infection; therefore, once infected a person is most likely infected for life. In most cases an active infection is controlled by the immune system and with time becomes dormant; however, it is not possible to predict whether or when the virus will become active again. For example, one recent study followed more than 600 female university students who were tested every 6 months (Groopman 1999). Over the course of 3 years, new HPV infections occurred in more than 40% of the women. Most infections lasted about 8 months and then subsided. After 2 years, however, about 10% of the women still carried active virus in the vagina and cervix. In this study the persistent infections were most commonly with the virulent, cancer-linked types.

ACELA SALAPANTAN ESQUILONA
Knowing that somebody in the family has cancer can be scary. Despite advances in modern medicine, it remains one of the leading causes of death everywhere and you just can't grasp the thought that someone dear to you is afflicted with it. Ma's ailment was diagnosed rather late. She ignored the initial back pains thinking that they were just menopausal symptoms. When the cervical cancer was finally discovered, it was past the curable stage. When Ma broke the news of her illness to us, she tried not to be too concerned about it. She conditioned herself to believe that she'd get well. We admired her courage and the great lengths she took not to complain too much about the pain but my father said that Ma silently wept (in church, usually) when we, her children were not around. We were also a financial wreck but my grandfather helped out in defraying the radiation treatment expenses. Because she was our family's bread winner for the past several years (my father's small business went under), she continued to teach despite her illness. She was a high school Physics teacher and she was quite a good instructress having graduated with honors from San Carlos University. She was the mild-mannered and religious type who avoided gossips and intrigues. During her more than 20 years of service in Masbate National Comprehensive High School (MNCHS), she didn't take leaves of absence for flimsy excuses. She cried, therefore, when after undergoing radiation therapy in Manila for two or three weeks, she returned to find the school Principal giving her failing marks in annual performance because of her absence. Other teachers who also had several absences but whose personalities were of the type who would not accept low marks sitting down, were generously given higher ratings.
