These words come from Kim, a young man with a condition called cerebral palsy. Because cerebral palsy affects Kim's muscles, other people often assume he's intellectually disabled. Sometimes his arms, legs and head move uncontrollably. When he tries to speak, he makes grunts and high pitched sounds, but this is simply because cerebral palsy affects the muscles of his tongue and mouth, making it impossible to form the usual sounds of speech. Kim, however, is far from intellectually disabled. He is studying at university and although he can't speak, he communicates with other people using letters fixed to a board on his lap. But there are times when he finds this frustrating. 'How are you, Kim?' people sometimes call out to him-then rush past without giving him time to reply with the use of his board. Even people with cerebral palsy who are able to speak well have problems-because their speech may be slurred, other people sometimes think they are drunk.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy results from injury to the cerebrum. The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain and is involved with higher mental faculties, sensations, and voluntary muscle activities. Symptoms? There are many symptoms and not everyone will experience all of the symptoms. Symptoms are usually apparent before age 2 and in severe cases may appear as early as three months. The symptoms include: seizures, muscle contractions, difficulty sucking or feeding, irregular breathing, delayed development of motor skills, such as reaching, sitting, rolling, crawling, walking, motormental retardation, mental retardation, speech abnormalities (dysarthria), visual abnormalities , hearing abnormalities, spasticity, progressive joint contractures, limited range of motion and peg teeth
