Yakimono - Traditional Pottery from Mr. Yamada Japanese Ceramics Made in the Traditional Shigaraki Style
For nearly 12,000 years, Japan has been producing ceramics. The earliest pottery, developed in the mountains around Nagano, was heavy and unglazed, reflecting the types of clay available in the mountains. Beginning with rice cultivation in around 300 BC, coarse mountain pottery gave way to the development of smoother, finer types of ceramics made from the delta silts where rice was grown. Although much of Japan’s ceramic technology came from China, Japan developed a multitude of techniques and styles of its own.
Mr. Yamada
has been creating pottery for about 30 years. He began his craft in 1970 when he started three years of apprenticeship with a master in Japan’s yakimono capital, Shigaraki. Shigaraki pottery is characterized by natural, unglazed russet colors, streaked with ash glaze from the kiln fires. Mr. Yamada retains this style in many of his works while continuing to develop his own style.
His goal is to live as simply as possible and to that end, he built last year his own yakimono studio and store at the edge of the sea. Working at his wheel inside his studio, he enjoys the scent of the structure’s open beam cedar architecture, the sounds of the sea, and the song of uguisu, a nightingale-like bird with a beautiful song, and a Japanese national treasure. His life is dedicated to his craft and wife and three children. When asked the obvious question, if he thinks a simple life is best, he replies, “For me. Yes.”

QUICK LINKS Home page Archaeology Arts and Crafts Civilizations Cultures First Peoples History Treasures Military history Artifact catalogue Library catalogue Other Web sites Boutique Well before Europeans reached this continent, Native peoples in many parts of Canada had mastered the art of producing durable, functional, and beautiful ceramic containers. The manufacture of ceramic containers requires an intricate knowledge of a complex technology. Pottery-making is foremost an understanding of material properties and the control of their modification through the application of heat. The earliest ceramics in Canada were made in the northern Yukon more than 3,500 years ago, within sight of the Arctic Ocean. That Siberian-inspired Palaeoeskimo pottery tradition, however, did not spread to more southern regions. The origins of the Aboriginal earthenware industry found south of Canada’s Arctic regions can be traced to the culturally rich lands draining into the valley of the Mississippi River. More than 2,500 years ago, ceramic pots appeared at many locations in southern Canada and gave rise to a number of distinct regional traditions. Ceramics were only one component in a much larger pulse of cultural influence emanating from the North American heartland. Ceramic pots served many purposes, but the most important was surely the preparation and cooking of food. As they were drawn to the warm fire of a hearth, people would regularly gather around the pot to share not only food, but also stories and information, laughter and sorrow. If only these pots could speak, what stories they would tell!

    (A. H. Dani) In this early medieval period of northern India, there is evidence of continuity in the popular art of the local people and of a marked change introduced by migrating peoples from Central Asia further north, such as the Türks, Gujars and other tribes who integrated themselves into the Rajput ruling system. As Buddhism was now mostly confined to Afghanistan and north-western India, Buddhist material may be recognized in the late phase of Buddhist survival here, e.g. at Bhamala ( ) and Giri ( ) in Taxila and from late terracotta and stucco figures from Taxila and Bamiyan. These figures present new ethnic elements which spread down through the Indus region and penetrated into Rajasthan and the western part of the Gangetic plain and created the Rajput style of art.

    The Richmond Pottery
Stoneware by Andrew Russell If you are interested in pottery and stoneware you may have already seen some of the items produced by Richmond Pottery in any number of craft shops and galleries throughout the United Kingdom and indeed continental Europe.
Richmond Pottery was established by Andrew Russell who learnt his craft in 1987 whilst working in the studio of a well established potter. As his natural ability blossomed he decided to venture forth and establish his own workshop.
Andrew's hand made pottery is produced from a variety of techniques. Best quality Staffordshire clay is fired at high temperatures vitrifying the clay to imbue the finished articles with the long life and durability necessary for practical oven-to-table kitchen ware. This same process also gives a feel of permanence to his more individual pieces some of which are produced solely for aesthetic appreciation.
Andrew continually experiments with new ideas and methods; a process that produces some beautiful and original pieces of contemporary ceramics. The variation in design coupled with an extensive range of glazes results in strong vibrant pottery fully reflective of his refreshing and exciting approach to his craft.
Andrew has extended his craft by working closely with other local artists such as Ian Scott-Massie and Mackenzie Thorpe who has experimented with a three dimensional art form. Collaboration with the former through a distinctive combination of form and colour has produced some stunning art works.
