Welcome to the first issue of Pyre for 2005, full of information and events that are happening in ceramics in W.A. and involvement of our members in exhibitions etc, interstate and overseas.
Earlier this year I had the great pleasure of being invited to say a few words at the opening of the new gallery extension to Bill Micklejohns workshop and gallery at Willyabrup in the south west. It was a wonderful evening of friends and supporters of Bills along with good food and wine. The weather was the perfect summer evening, warm and still. Bill has built a small but well proportioned new gallery, which gives him the opportunity to show off the more individual pieces of his work while still having an extensive showroom, which continues the space.
It complements the existing buildings which are mostly timber, local coffee rock (ironstone) and corrugated iron and which all fit beautifully into the local environment. They are indicative of a style of built environment that has become synonymous with the south west. It is not flashy or ostentatious and weathers and ages slowly to blend in with the local vegetation. It is also indicative of a lifestyle and approach to living.
This importance of location and region play a significant role of course in the promotion of the Margaret River region through its food and wine as well as lifestyle. In both the wine and food industries the land, climate, water etc are all seen to be expressed through the produce. The French in particular place great significance on this in the wine industry. Is there a message there that should be heeded by those of us in the art - craft - design field? Should we be attempting to express something about our locale? Should we also attempt to convince our market of the importance of saying something about where and how we live in our choice of the buildings we live in and the objects that we use and decorate them with? I like to call this space the domestic environment. It can be both external and internal. It can take in the suburban environment, the streetscape etc, the garden and courtyards as well as the internal environment.

Clay Work
by
Chris Henley

Welcome to the pottery website of Chris Henley. I developed this site to share my work and ideas with others who also have a passion for creating things from clay. The signature shown above is my trademark. I live and work in Encinitas, California.
My clay work is done primarily on the wheel, but I explore other techniques as well. When firing, I typically use a gas fueled kiln, and favor ash and clay glazes fired to cone 10. I do explore other forming techniques, glaze materials, and firing ranges. As this page develops, I will be adding links to other pottery sites along with information and updated photos of my work.
Comments? Questions? Use this link to contact Chris: EMAIL
Below are some examples of my clay work. Click on the thumbnail view to go to a larger picture and read more about each piece. Use your browser back button to return to this page. Click here to check out my Pottery Tools Web Page!!

A Century of Ceramics: A Selection of 20th Century Potters and Potteries in the Isle of Wight Lisa and Andrew Dowden, Robin Goodredge. London: 2005
This is an exceptional example, in the realm of crafts, of a small island community seizing the initiative to promote their home-grown potteries industry through a publication. This has been achieved by Lisa and Andrew Dowden and Robin Goodredge, with typical industry and considerable success. There has been pottery on the Isle of Wight for 5,000 years, as the authors claim. But this book surveys the work of some 27 potters, all of whom are profiled in such a way that the period in which they worked is reflected.
The authors of this encyclopaedic survey are to be congratulated for their perseverance and proficiency in mapping the trials and vicissitudes of all who have helped to develop pottery on the Isle of Wight throughout the 20th century. They are modest about their own attainments, yet this fine book is their testimony.
