Central African Republic History Archaeological remains indicate that a civilisation existed in the region of modern day CAR before the rise of Egypt. Little is known of that, however, and of the CAR's present inhabitants, pygmies were the first to arrive. More than 1000 years ago people began migrating from Sudan in the east and Cameroon in the west. By 1600, the region was probably part of the Gaoga empire; slavery was the rage and villages were continually raided by Arab conquerors from Chad and Sudan, and via the coast by European slavers. Whole villages in the north were depopulated, and people were still being sold in Cairo slave markets until the late 19th century. The CAR today is one of the most lightly populated countries in Africa. When the European powers carved up Africa, France was awarded most of the central area. In 1889, a French post was set up in Bangui, although complete control wasn't secured for another 12 years. The French government soon realised it did not have the savoir-faire to exploit the region to the full, so the government broke it down into 17 concessions and dished them out to European companies in exchange for around 15% of profits and a fixed annual payment. The companies weren't particularly enlightened employers; they conscripted the local population into slave-like servitude. Those who refused or deserted were killed or tortured, and thousands died.

Bangui, with a population of about 500,000, is by far the largest urban center in the country. Religion The Africa of an earlier day knew only animism and fetishism, and many of these attitudes persist today. More than 80 years of missionary activity by Baptist and evangelical missionaries has resulted, however, in a large number of churches and a great influence in society. Past and Current Work The history of Baptist Mid-Missions’ work in the Central African Republic begins with the history of the Mission itself when on January 1, 1921, Rev. William Haas, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Rosenau, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Young, and Mrs. Rowena Becker began their long journey inland to establish the first three stations of BMM at Sibut, Crampel, and Bangassou. Eventually the ministry spread throughout much of the C.A.R. Over the decades the Lord has raised up hundreds of Baptist churches. The Scriptures have been translated into Sango; a hospital and dispensaries have been established; and Bible schools have trained hundreds of pastors and Christian workers who now carry on the majority of the work.

Since the nineteenth century the area of the present-day Central African Republic is inhabited by Sudanese tribes, the Banda and the Baya. In 1875 the Egyptian sultan Rabah governs Upper-Oubangui. Europeans, primarily the French, German and Belgians arrive in the area in 1885. The French gets possession of the right bank of the Oubangui River in 1887 and form the territory of Upper-Ubangui , that becomes part of French Congo .Two years later, the French established an outpost at Bangui, and in 1894 Oubangui-Chari became a French territory. France consolidates its control over the territory in 1903 after having defeated the forces of Rabah and establishes colonial administration throughout the territory. In 1907 France establishes the seperate colony of Ubangui-Chari-Chad , this colony becomes in 1910 a constituent part of French Equatorial Africa . The territory is divided in 1920 into Ubangui-Chari and Chad . Ubangui-Chari becomes a French overseas territory in 1946 and when in 1958 French Equatorial Africa is dissolved, it gets autonomy as the Central African Republic

E-mail Central African Republic by Introduction Central African Republic (CAR) has 3.2 million inhabitants unequally spread over 622,984 sq km (240,535 sq miles). Political turmoil has severely affected the economy and GDP growth has been fluctuating between 3.5% and 5.2% a year. History of Higher Education During independence in 1960, the country had no single university. Central African students expatriated, particularly to France, to obtain degrees in higher education institutions. In the early 1960s, the country shared with Gabon, Chad, and the Republic of Congo, a common post-secondary institution: the Foundation for Higher Education in Central Africa (FESAC), created by France to provide a regional training infrastructure for people of the former colonies of the French Equatorial Africa. CAR hosted the Agriculture Institute, while secondary schools teachers received their training at the School of Education in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. At the Wakombo Agricultural Research Center and botanical center, high-level research was then conducted on tropical plants such as coffee, cocoa, and pepper trees. The center ran the Cahiers de la Maboke, a respected international journal published in collaboration with the French Museum of Natural History, from the mid-1940s to the nationalization of the center in 1966.

Q: Who is favourite to win the presidency? Francois Bozize , a former army general, who ousted former President Ange-Felix Patasse and took control in the capital, Bangui, in March 2003. The coup was condemned internationally but Mr Bozize gradually gained approval at home after he restored security to the capital, paid wage arrears and launched an anti-corruption drive. Though he pledged new elections when the security situation improved, the vote was delayed for two years due to instability in the north of the country. Mr Bozize announced in December 2004 he would run as an independent candidate after initially ruling himself out. Q: Who are his main challengers? The report prepared by the government contains information on, inter alia In its concluding observations and comments ( CRC/C/15/Add.138 ), the Committee noted positively: references to children in the Constitution and the adoption of a new family code, which entered into force in October 1998; the establishment of a Children's Parliament and of a network of ambassadors for peace; the introduction of a program through which schools are managed by local communities and the accompanying increase in the enrolment of children living in those communities; efforts to receive refugee children from neighbouring countries; the establishment of the National Commission for the Follow-Up of the Convention and of committees at provincial and local levels.
