There are three goals in the Peace Corps mission:
1. Aid economic development in host countries
3. Share what we learn of the culture of HCNs with our fellow Americans
Both my own inexperience as a teacher and the following external factors limited my effectiveness:
2. Convincing parents that there is value in sending their children to school instead of to work in the fields growing food for the family is not easy.
I took a few pictures during my stay in Central Africa. View my picture gallery!

In an open-hearted discussion between the international committee and the CAR delegation, it was admitted that the people of the CAR were "unhappy with the present situation in the country and the fact that economic and social conditions were not up to standard." The delegation from the CAR did not intent to hide the fact that democracy was not safeguarded in the country. The officials of the Government underlined that despite the numerous legislative and administrative measures in all development fields, the country had not made much head way. The country had been destitute for many years. At present, nothing could be done without money. "How could a country respect the human rights of the citizens under such circumstances?"

Ethnically, culturally and geographically it is one of Africa's most diverse regions. More than two-hundred ethnic groups live across its lush tropical coastal forests, cool volcanic plateaus and graceful arid grasslands. The broad range of climate and environment generates an equally wide variety of economic activities and cultural styles. Many areas are noted for the refinement of their traditional government, social structure, rituals, and arts and crafts. It has been said that if you can't visit the entire African continent you can visit Cameroon and see a sample of it all. Programs may also visit Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon and Congo. The Pygmies have an incredibly complex folk music tradition. Polyphony and counterpoint are common components, as is an incredibly varied rhythmic structure. The trumpet -based music of the Bandas has also gained some popularity outside of the area due to its jazzy structure. The Ngbaka use an unusual instrument called a mbela , which is made with an arched branch and a string strung between the two ends and held in front of the musician's mouth.
