Central Africa witchcraft cops fight sorcery boom
By Lucy Jones, Reuters, Monday 26 August 2002. Hundreds of men, women and children are charged every year with practising witchcraft and police say the numbers are shooting up. Doctors believe that many deaths attributed to sorcery should actually be blamed on AIDS. The bulging witchcraft case files may be due to people making accusations through jealousy or to eliminate rivals.

Central African Republic Plants and Animal Back to Top The mineral resources of this agricultural nation are comparatively undeveloped. Diamonds are the dominant exploited mineral. Deposits of uranium exist, as well as iron ore, gold, zinc, copper and tin. Commercially valuable trees include the sapele mahogany and obeche. Almost every animal of the African Tropics is found in the nation. Central African Republic Communications Back to Top

Central African Republic Culture Back to Top Churches are valuable in both rural and urban life, constituting major centres of not just religious activity but also social interaction. In addition to Sunday services, religious schools and various groups for women, men, adolescents, and children are common. Church members often gather after worship services for a ndoye, a celebration with singing and dancing to honour a famous church member. Members bring food, soap, and kerosene to the honoree, who in turn, serves coffee, tea and a light snack. Until the 19th century, artisans in the region produced many fine handmade items. The slave trade and the early years of colonization disrupted the development of crafts, and most of them disappeared. Today, woven mats and baskets, simple wooden utensils, carved stools, a rare mask, pottery, and musical instruments, including the balafon much like a xylophone but constructed with animal horns, skins, and wood are all that remain of older handiwork. More newly, handicraft workers have begun producing unique designs and pictures made from butterfly wings pasted to paper and some ebony and other tropical hardwood carvings.

Description
The Central African Republic is famed worldwide for its lowland gorilla population, Pygmy culture, and fabulous national parks.
In the 1800s, the local Pygmy population was all but decimated by the slave trade. The French ( to their credit ) were anti-slavery, and began to take control of this land in 1905 by establishing the colony of Ubangi-Chair. In the 1940s the country became a French overseas territory, finally gaining its independence from France in 1958.
From 1965 - 1979, the country suffered through the dictatorial reign of Colonel Jean-Bedel Bokassa. A series of military coups followed, with multiparty elections finally held in 1993.
The country has the potential to be a major tourist destination, but generally, that's defeated by its poor infrastructure. However, for those that somehow venture in ( mostly Europeans ), the pristine parks and wildlife are second to none, and hunting safaris ( sadly ) are still a big business.

The imposition of colonial boundaries and governmental systems gives rise to developing national consciousness among many Central Africans, inspiring movements to achieve political independence and reclaim indigenous African identity, such as Mobuto Sese Seko's "authenticity" campaign and Tshibumba Kanda Matulu's series of paintings on Congolese history.
In what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo, a ritual expert ( nganga ) and the Yombe artist known today as the Chiloango River Master collaborate on the creation of a corpus of distinctive minkisi , or monumental power figures, called Mangaaka. Used by diviners to consult the spiritual realm for solutions to earthly crises, these works are characterized by their massive scale, naturalistic appearance, and intricately carved representations of knotted fiber headgear. The White Fathers, a Catholic missionary group organized to seek conversions in non-Christian areas of Africa, is established in the southeastern Congo. Originally seeking to carve out an independent "Christian Kingdom" within territory largely inhabited by Tabwa and related peoples, the White Fathers sponsor missionary schools and produce dictionaries, grammars, and a translation of the Bible in the local KiTabwa language. After 1900, as control over the Belgian Free State is consolidated and ultimately transferred to the Belgian republican government, the White Fathers abandon territorial aspirations and focus on conversion. Large numbers of indigenous religious sculpture as well as trees and stones associated with earth spirit sites are destroyed, while others are confiscated and sent to White Fathers headquarters in Belgium and Rome.
