The story behind the globe-trotting corndog
Poland, October 1990: The aroma of frying sausages spiced the chilly air at the Poznan International Agricultural Fair. Hungry attendees circled the U.S. Department of Commerce Pavilion where Glenn Walser demonstrated the production of a tempting new food. At the end of the day, an enterprising café owner had bought the first market-entry version of Automated Food System, Inc.’s (AFSI) corndog processing system.
AFSI’s goal: to sell its industrial equipment to food processors in Europe. The strategy: position manual equipment to make the corndog visible and desired through direct sale to the consumer. The challenge: distribution and marketing. When Walser, an industrial engineer introduced the world’s first automated corndog system in 1976, the challenge had been simply to give food processing corporations a way to efficiently mass produce the corndog, made popular by the Texas State Fair. With that accomplished, markets in both the U.S. and Canada were assured. Corporate customers gladly paid for automation to cut costs in labor and workers’ compensation cases.

Knowledge in Central America
(Continued)
Section V : Conclusions and Recommendations
Conclusions and Recommendations A new era of economic opportunities for Central American countries based on trade liberalization has begun. Free Trade is causing and will continue promoting significant changes in the way commerce, agriculture, education, environment, and technological sectors are conducted in the region. As detailed previously in this report, these transformations have occurred in response to increasing export opportunities for companies and enterprises across the region. But these opportunities will have no significance if workers do not have immediate access to appropriate knowledge, technologies, and related technical, management, scientific, and business skills. Therefore, the development of scientific, business, and technological capacities in Central American countries will require the continuous training of human resources and the establishment of an institutional infrastructure and research capabilities needed to achieve technological expansion. Policy initiatives that encourage investments in education and training programs. Along with well-defined strategies for evaluation and tracking of these programs, are required. At the same time, innovative mechanisms for fostering cooperation between the industry and education and training sectors will also be necessary.

IR/PS in the News : New York Times "Latin America is Priority on Bush Trade Agenda"
December 18, 2000 By Anthony DePalma He may not be comfortable discussing unrest In East Timor, or pronouncing the name of the leaders of Turkmenistan, but President-elect George W. Bush considers the rest of the Western Hemisphere "our backyard" and will have several opportunities in his first year In office to make Latin America a trade and foreign policy priority. During the campaign, Mr. Bush said he would kick start the stalled process of getting a free trade agreement of the Americas signed by 2005. The agreement would build on the North American Free-Trade Agreement, which went into effect in 1994, and would unite 34 of the countries in North, Central and South America into what President Clinton once said would be "the world's largest market." The first order of business would be a bruising battle in a divided Congress over fast-track authority, the legislative tool that Mr. Bush will need to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal. Under fast track, trade deals are brought to Congress for approval only when complete. Congress then votes on the agreement without having the chance to add amendments that suit the needs and wishes of individual members. "I'd expect that within the first 100 days in office he'll propose approval of fast-track authority," said Sidney Weintraub, an economist at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a former deputy assistant secretary of state for International finance and development.

10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2002 - Dirksen 538
I am Scott Otteman, Director of International Trade Policy at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The NAM is an organization of 14,000 member firms - 10,000 of which are small or medium-sized. Our members produce the vast bulk of U.S. manufactured goods and are world leaders in productivity and product quality. I am pleased to be here this morning to discuss the financial and economic situation in Latin America and to present the NAM's views on how this affects American business, American jobs, and the U.S. economy. We can look at the relationship from three perspectives: (1) trade - the exports and imports of goods and services; (2) investment - the direct participation of U.S. firms in Latin American economies; and (3) the effect that financial instability in Latin America might have in terms of a spillover to the broader global economy. While the first two aspects are of considerable significance, it is the third aspect that is probably of the greatest concern to the business community. Home International trade in reptiles booms
New report examines the US connection International trade in live reptiles has increased dramatically in the last decade, with the USA as the central player. The trade supplies a number of markets, from food to aquariums and zoos, but by far the most significant market is for live reptiles as pets. In the USA, imports significantly declined after the passage of laws such as the US Endangered Species Act in the 1970s. However, in the last 10 years, the USA has seen an enormous increase in live reptile imports and has become a major supplier as well. Today, the USA accounts for 82 per cent of the reported international trade in live reptiles covered under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, according to a new study by TRAFFIC North America. The study, published in the report The US Role in the International Live Reptile Trade: Amazon Tree Boas to Zululand Dwarf Chameleons by Craig Hoover, analyzed global trade data and reviewed trade in approximately 100 species, many covered under CITES.

Home Search Version Español (24 September 2002) U.S. trade officials held simultaneous meetings with their counterparts from Central and South American countries September 24 to advance their common goal of building stronger trade ties within the region and world-wide. In Washington, U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Zoellick met with the four ministers responsible for trade from Mercosur members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. In Managua, Nicaragua, a delegation led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Regina Vargo held consultations with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua which have as a group expressed interest in free trade with the United States. "I am pleased that so soon after September 11 we could stand united with two groups of Latin American nations to advance our shared commitment to openness through increased trade liberalization," Zoellick said in a September 24 news release. The ministers' meeting in Washington was called following the recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement with Argentina, and was held pursuant to the 1991 "Four-Plus-One" Rose Garden Agreement between the United States and the Mercosur countries. The ministers pledged to cooperate to help launch a new round of global trade talks this November and for continued progress on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). The Four-Plus-One ministers also said they would reinvigorate the Council on Trade and Investment established by the Rose Garden Agreement, and announced the creation of working groups within the Council in the areas of agricultural trade, industrial trade, investment, and electronic commerce.

The Conservation Challenge in Latin America
Working to reverse these trends are numerous nature conservation and wildlife protection organisations spread throughout Latin America. Hundreds of innovative environmental projects exist such as those to protect immense areas of lush tropical forest. They are run by dedicated people committed to studying and saving these wild habitats and their flora and fauna. Without the support and commitment of volunteers, many projects would be unable to carry out this vital work. You get to undertake exciting, challenging, educational trips to exotic locations by helping the environment, and in turn, your contribution as a volunteer helps to conserve the very places that you visit.
Did you know?
At the rate we are going, in the next 25 years we will lose 30% of all the flora and fauna living on this planet - approximately 20,000 a year. You can help stop this atrocity now.
