Research Guide for Prof. Zamora's International Trade Class
By Chenglin Liu Last modified: 1/8/2003 International Trade Law Sources on the Internet To a large extent, intergovernmental negotiations make global trade a reality. As a result, legal documents from international and regional trade organizations are essential for international trade law research. Unfortunately, there is not a codified publications system or central database developed for international law researchers. For those who are accustomed to researching on Westlaw or Lexis, international law research could be time-consuming, sometimes even frustrating. Thanks to the internet, most organizations devoted to liberalizing international trade make a great number of legislation available on the web. Internet resources have thus become an important source, if not the only one, to retrieve updated information on international trade law. • US - Foreign-Trade Zones FTZ are designated sites licensed by the Foreign- Trade Zones (FTZ) Board (Sec. Commerce is Chairman) at which special Customs procedures may be used. Latin American Wildlands in Danger
U.S. commercial interests are fueling the destruction of some of the world's most vital ecosystems.
NRDC's BioGems Initiative mobilizes citizen activists from around the world to help to protect endangered wildlands in the Americas. Since 2001, NRDC activists, known as BioGems Defenders, have sent more than 5 million messages to corporations and government officials calling for wildland protection, achieving numerous successes. Latin America is home to some of the richest forest and marine ecosystems on earth. Spanning Central America, South America and the Caribbean islands, this region supports a third of the world's wildlife and comprises such natural wonders as the towering Andes range and the mighty Amazon and Orinoco rivers. Latin America's Amazon rainforest provides a sanctuary for thousands of rare animals, insects and plants and helps reduce global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Yet increasing foreign exploitation and escalating demand from consumers in the United States and other industrialized countries for forest and agricultural products, oil and minerals now threaten to destroy Latin America's extraordinary natural values. In recent decades, logging, mining and energy-related development, as well as the production of agricultural products for export, has taken a severe toll on many Latin American wildlands, claiming vast stretches of native forest and contaminating lakes, rivers and coastal waters from Mexico to southern Chile. This onslaught has had devastating impacts on the region's indigenous people, displacing villages, polluting drinking water and laying waste to the lands they depend on for survival.
