In this image from the Sunday Hours of the Trinity , the presence of the globe in the figure's lap indicates that he is God the Father.
Despite popular belief, medieval art wasn't always religious. This herbal manuscript was painted in 11th-century England.
This portrait artist's workshop, painted on a sarcophagus in the 1st century provides a rare look into the ancient artist's world.
This 6th-century Byzantine mosaic Christ enthroned between Four Angels , shows how defined Christian art was already in the early Byzantine Empire.

The symbolism is ancient and has strong meanings, per engaged and married couple as well as single people. Distribution Source : ArriveNet Editorials Date : Saturday - July 16, 2005 Peter Crump (ArriveNet Editorials - Jul 16, 2005) The symbolism of Celtic Diamond Rings is relevant to all cultures. Love and friendship intertwined in the Celtic symbols on the ring have relevance to every couple contemplating marriage. The ancient Celts used the symbols of the Claddagh to show that marriage is a partnership where love prevails throughout any hardship. The Celtic Daimond Rings are well-known for the symbol of a heart with two crowns, both cradled by linked hands.
You don’t have to be engaged to be married to wear diamond and emerald claddagh rings. The way you wear the ring signifies whether or not you are romantically attached. For unmarried girls, wearing the rings with the heart facing outward means that you are free, while wearing the heart inwards on the claddagh ring sends a message that you are not free for a romantic fling.

OPINION By CURTIS NEIL The Kern County Scottish Society will be holding their The 10th Annual Highland Gathering and Games on April 2nd at Stramler Park on Chester near the Kern County Museum. The Highland Games, with their feats of strength may be the best known aspect, but the Scottish traditions are everywhere with the clan gatherings, music, genealogy, dancing, living history groups, food, crafts, and vendors. It’s been called “a cheap trip to Scotland.” Family attendance is encouraged with children 12 and under being admitted free with a paid adult admission. Highland Gathering and Games offer a chance to glimpse into the lives of our ancestors from medieval through modern times. Genealogy is an increasingly popular hobby for many people. Knowledgeable people will be available to talk to you about tracing your family roots and Scottish sources in particular. Both the genealogy and clan conveners will help anyone inquiring about a possible Scottish surname. A visit to the dale of the clans will find colorful tents hosted by clansmen eager to share artifacts, tartans and history associated with a particular name. Don’t be surprised to get the feeling you may have stumbled on a family reunion. Indeed, many clan members view the clan as an extended family with a shared history. Music, in great variety, is everywhere. The Great Highland Bagpipe, originally an “instrument of war” just begs for the open spaces of the Gatherings. Our Gathering will feature pipe bands (bagpipes and drums), all kilted of course. Bagpipe music can be heard from the classical bagpipe the “piobaireachd” in solo competition, through popular marching pieces to modern “rock” versions. Two bagpipe bands, Stag N Thistle from Fresno and Kern County’s own, Tehachapi Mountain Pipes and Drums, will be performing throughout the day. Celtic music, a term for Scots and Irish, includes far more than the bagpipes. Traditional Celtic music, exemplified by bands like Banshee in the Kitchen will be playing. Wicked Tinkers, the show stopping, rocking, high energy performers with traditional Great Highland Bag Pipes and traditional drums, will be highlighting the entertainment venue.

http://www.indianchild.com/dogs.htm
Dogs exist in a wide range of sizes, colors, and temperaments. Some, such as the Doberman pinscher and the German shepherd, serve as alert and aggressive watchdogs. Others, such as the beagle and the cocker spaniel, are playful family pets, even though they were bred for hunting. Still others, such as the collie and the Welsh corgi, can herd farm or range animals. Each of the dogs just mentioned is a purebred. A mongrel dog, howeverone with many breeds in its backgroundcan just as easily fit into family life. Dogs have been domesticated for most of human history and have thus endeared themselves to many over the years. Stories have been told about brave dogs that served admirably in war or that risked their lives to save persons in danger. When Pompeiithe Roman community destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79was finally excavated, searchers found evidence of a dog lying across a child, apparently trying to protect the youngster. Perhaps few of the millions of dogs in the world may be so heroic, but they are still a source of genuine delight to their owners. The dog is one of the most popular pets in the world. It ordinarily remains loyal to a considerate master, and because of this the dog has been called man's best friend.

It's nearly time to celebrate Halloween so the witches at BBC Gloucestershire have tracked down some of the best Halloween sites for you to visit. Fact File + The word Halloween actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows' Eve. The Jack-o-lantern custom comes from Irish folklore. A man named Jack, who was notorious as a trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. + Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree's trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. + Jack made a deal with the Devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree.

Archaeology and history share an attachment to visual evidence, making the web a near-perfect medium for gathering primary information on these subjects. Whether your aim is casual browsing or methodical research, the combination of graphic images and multitudes of on-line sources and databases provides fruitful grounds for exploration. Sources are alphabeticized below in two basic groupings: a) general topics; b) links by country.
