[thomas breuel] Well, as far as I can tell, the whole issue becomes moot with Cecil because it has a programming environment that addresses the issue of adding new methods to existing classes at the UI level. Exactly! That's why I like its solution: the problem is solved so thoroughly that it becomes a non-issue for programmers. Less comprehensive solutions always seem to have the flavor of puzzles (i.e., "look at this neat trick I sprayed over umpteen classes! guess how it works ..."). OTOH, multimethods are central to Cecil's view of programming, and it's not clear that picking them out of Cecil and dumping them into Python would do good. I mentioned earlier that a signature-registering scheme was presented in the newsgroup a few years ago; that scheme emulated Cecil's rules in Python so far as was possible (given that Cecil is classless and has objects "all the way down"). I doubt anyone ever used it for real, because the worldview it's based on just isn't natural for Python. Adding methods outside class definitions isn't a cure-all.
