Cecil/Vortex Cecil is a purely object-oriented language intended to support rapid construction of high-quality, extensible software. Cecil incorporates multi-methods, a simple prototype-based object model, a mechanism to support a structured form of computed inheritance, module-based encapsulation, and a flexible static type system which allows statically- and dynamically-typed code to mix freely. Vortex is an optimizing compiler infrastructure for object-oriented and other high-level languages. It targets both pure object-oriented languages like Cecil and hybrid object-oriented languages like C++, Modula-3 , and Java. Vortex currently incorporates high-level optimizations such as static class analysis, class hierachy analysis, profile-guided receiver class prediction, profile-guided selective procedure specialization, intraprocedural message splitting, automatic inlining, and static closure analyses. It also includes a collection of standard intraprocedural analyses such as common subexpression elimination and dead assignment elimination. The Vortex compiler is written entirely in Cecil. Complex assays allow text entry of any formula with up to 76 characters. For complex calculations up to 20 such formulae may be entered and linked for formidable computing power without a PC. Assays may use up to 10 wavelengths and 8 cells in any automatic programmed method. Once entered programmes may be stored, as methods, security protected. Tabulation of results is automatic and the ease and speed of use makes Assay Program a very powerful tool.
    Fast Program Any Assay
Any quantitative assay may be rapidly input for automatic computation using the Cecil Assay Program software module. No programming skill is required by the operator. Transcription and calculation errors are avoided and validation is simple as no PC is used. Calculations for a series of Carboxy Haemoglobin samples is shown below with the formulae used.

The focus for this seminar is cool language features . The idea is to take a particular language feature each week (or two weeks, or three...) and pick it apart. Relevant discussions and papers include the compiler implementation, optimization, and novel use of high-level language features. While no one programming language in particular will be focussed upon, the idea is to gain some knowledge of languages not in the "mainstream" world of academic coursework. Important information: Course number Meeting place Bryan Hall, room 509C Meeting time Wednesdays, 10am-noon Credit 1 unit Grade option pass/fail only * * You pass the seminar by attending and presenting a paper.

What is a 4-H volunteer? How do they make a difference?
Perhaps this story will explain why adults volunteer to Maryland 4-H. A 4-H volunteer was teaching Sandy how to ride the gas-powered lawn mower. Sandy’s Mom called to her. As Sandy turned to answer, she rode the lawn mower through the flowerbed. Sandy’s Mom began to raise her voice in anger. The 4-H Volunteer walked quickly to the mom and said, "Please remember . . . we're raising children, not flowers!" The 4-H Volunteer reminded the mother to remember our priorities. Children and their self-esteem are more important than any physical object they might break or destroy. We are here today to recognize the excellence in club, volunteer, friends and partners in 4-H. Maryland 4-H is proud to be a partner in the United States Department of Agriculture and Army Youth Development Project. Dr. Heidi Haugen is the youth development and technology specialist who works in Korea with the 4-H program. Nicole Deprez-Garrity is the youth development specialist working with the Army youth and families in Europe. All 4-Hers in these countries are members of the Allegany 4-H program in Maryland. We are going to recognize two outstanding clubs of excellence from the overseas Army Installations. The 4-H Military Clubs of Excellence and other Army awards were accepted by Deb Marple and Nancy Campbell from the US Army Community and Family Support Center.

I think Cecil takes the problem [multiple dispatch] seriously, as
    does CLOS.
    [thomas breuel]
Well, as far as I can tell, the whole issue becomes moot with
Cecil because it has a programming environment that addresses
the issue of adding new methods to existing classes at the
    UI level.

Exactly! That's why I like its solution: the problem is solved so thoroughly that it becomes a non-issue for programmers. Less comprehensive solutions always seem to have the flavor of puzzles (i.e., "look at this neat trick I sprayed over umpteen classes! guess how it works ..."). OTOH, multimethods are central to Cecil's view of programming, and it's not clear that picking them out of Cecil and dumping them into Python would do good. I mentioned earlier that a signature-registering scheme was presented in the newsgroup a few years ago; that scheme emulated Cecil's rules in Python so far as was possible (given that Cecil is classless and has objects "all the way down"). I doubt anyone ever used it for real, because the worldview it's based on just isn't natural for Python. Adding methods outside class definitions isn't a cure-all.
