You are in: Home Technology DVD-Video Playback Hardware DVD-Video discs play on DVD players, some games consoles and PCs with DVD drives There is now a wide range of hardware capable of playing DVD-Video titles including DVD-Video players PCs with DVD capability and games consoles DVD players are also able to play other formats including CDs, CD-Rs, DVD-Audios etc. In addition new widescreen TVs and surround sound systems are available allowing consumers to experience the excellent picture and sound quality that DVD has to offer. DVD-Video Players The first DVD-Video players appeared in Japan in November 1996 and in the USA in March 1997. Europe did not see players until a year later and it took another year before they were available in all consumer electronic stores. All players play all physical formats, ie DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-14 and DVD-18. All players will also play CD audio discs and most will play Video CD discs. All but the cheapest players include a second, infra-red laser so that they can play CD-R discs. The DVD red laser is not compatible with the dye used for CD-R discs. DVD-RAM discs cannot be played on most DVD-Video players. Many players will play CDs containing MP3 files and a few players will play JPEG images as slideshows.

These platforms, with appropriate hardware/software, will also play DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs.
  • Most modern PCs now include a DVD-ROM drive and hardware or software MPEG-2 decoder in order to play DVD discs. Microsoft has designed DVD support into Windows. The latest Apple Macintosh computers can provide DVD playback or can be upgraded with the external Apple DVD-Video kit. New Games consoles such as Sony's Playstation2 and Microsoft's X-box, which incorporate a DVD drive and are capable of playing DVD-Video discs.
DVD-ROM drives DVD-ROM drives, like CD-ROM drives, are being developed with ever-increasing speeds. Early drives offered 2x speeds, while the latest drives now offer 16x speeds. These faster drives are not necessary for DVD-Video titles (which read data at 1x), but allow faster data transfer for multimedia and games applications.

1 of 1 To know the real performance of a CD or DVD unit is not as simple as it seems. Even though optic units usually have their performance printed on their front panels, such performance is not real. The performance of CD units is usually informed through the number of times the unit is faster than the standard CD player. The transfer rate of the standard CD Player is 150 KB/s. Thus, a 52x unit has a maximum theoretical performance of 52 x 150 KB/s = 7,800 KB/s. The transfer rate of the standard DVD Player is 1,350 KB/s. Thus, a 4x DVD-ROM unit has a transfer rate of 4 x 1,350 KB/s = 5,400 KB/s. Note that the speed measurement unit used on CD-ROM's is different from the unit used on DVD-ROM's. A 1x speed in a DVD unit equals to a 9x speed in a CD. The problem is that both CD and DVD units operate with constant angular speed (CAV, Constant Angular Velocity). In plain English, that means that the speed informed by the manufacturer is only obtained when the unit is reading the data at the border of the disc. When it is reading the data from the innermost part of the disc, the unit usually reaches half its nominal speed. That is, when it is reading the innermost sectors, a 52x unit usually operates at a 26x rate!

In other words, the maximum speed of a CD unit, which is what all of us use to choose which unit to buy, is often incorrect, for there is a performance difference among same speed units from different manufacturers.

Because of the growing complexity of new computer hardware and software, there is always possibility that the USB DOS driver and the installation procedures that we provide cannot enable you to install the Windows OS onto your system. In this case, you may need to check with your hardware manufacturers to determine the problem. Addonics cannot provide any technical support beyond our own products as our technical staffs have no knowledge of the computer hardware and software that you have. Often time, there might be existing hardware problems or damaged installation CDs that prevent the proper installation of the Windows OS. Hard Disk Drives With hard disk drives, both speed and size matters. In terms of the brand, I would personally stick with the leading brand names like IBM, Seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. With hard disk drives there are basically five different types, EIDE, SCSI, Firewire, Serial ATA, and USB.
