THE BRITISH
ARCHAEOLOGICAL
ASSOCIATION
The British Archaeological Association was founded in 1843 to promote the study of archaeology, art and architecture and the preservation of our national antiquities. It encourages original research and publishes new work on art and antiquities of Roman to post-medieval date. The association embraces a wide spectrum of antiquarian and art historical interests (with architectural history strongly represented) and its capacity to engage in debate across these disciplines is a major strength. Regular lectures held in London provide one channel of communication; others include an annual conference held over several days (whose proceedings are published for the benefit of members at large) and an annual journal. The BAA is a Registered Charity (no. 1014821) and a company limited by guarantee and registered in England, number 2747476.
LECTURE SERIES
The lectures take place on the first Wednesday of each month from October to May. Meetings are held in the rooms of the Society of Antiquaries of London, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London WIV OHS. Tea is served from 4.30 p.m. and the chair is taken at 5.00 p.m. Members may introduce guests. Non-members not being so introduced are welcome to attend occasional individual lectures, but are asked to introduce themselves to the Director or one or other of the officers on arrival. 6 October 2004

http://www.castles-abbeys.co.uk/Rochester-Castle.html
Rochester Castle Kent England " Our age has not known a siege so hard pressed nor so strongly resisted " The Barnwell Chronicler The ancient city of Rochester has a distinguished history which can arguably rival any other in modern Britain. The famous Roman road, Watling Street, crosses the River Medway here on its way from London to Dover via Canterbury, and since that time, Rochester has always been regarded as an important strategic stronghold. However, it's the medieval castle and cathedral which attract the attention of the modern visitor, both built within the old Roman city walls, they have resisted siege and destruction for over 900 years. The first castle was raised here at the time of the Norman Conquest and is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. This early fortification was rebuilt for King William Rufus between 1087-89 by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, and was one of the earliest castles in this country to be fortified in stone. Much of the documentation on Rochester survives, along with the many dramatic details of its military history - which saw the castle suffer three major sieges within two centuries of its foundation. Early records suggest that after the conquest, both the City and Castle of Rochester were awarded to the half-brother of King William, Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. The first Norman fortification built here would have been a standard motte and bailey design of timber and earth, and would have almost certainly been erected very soon after the conquest in 1066. Before his disgrace and imprisonment in 1082, Odo was a dominant figure in Norman England and was awarded the earldom of Kent by William after the conquest. He is also said to have been responsible for the making of the Bayeux Tapestry, yet it was Odo who was the principal cause of the first great siege of Rochester Castle in 1088, shortly after his own release from confinement.

England
'Oft on the mouldering Keep by night Earl Roger takes his stand, With the sword that shone at Hastings' fight, Firm grasped in his red, right hand ! ' This is how an ancient poem begins about Roger de Montgomery who it was believed had fought alongside Duke William at Hastings. In fact Roger de Montgomery wasn't at the Battle of Hastings, but was left at home to look after Normandy for William while he was in England. He contributed greatly to the invasion force and was to be richly rewarded for his loyal services. Duke William, now King William, bestowed upon him the Earldoms of Shrewsbury and Arundel, of which the latter consisted of the rape and honour of the district, as well as the rape of Chichester, which made him Lord of 84 manors. He also founded the Abbey at Shrewsbury in 1083, which he is reputed to have entered 3 days before his death, yet legend has it that his ghost haunts the magnificent keep at Arundel. After the Norman Conquest, King William divided the County of 'Sudsexe' (Sussex) into six 'rapes' - Chichester, Arundel, Bramber, Lewis, Pevensey, and Hastings. Each one commanded a harbour or river, along with a carefully sited Castle, and the 'rape' system in Sussex cannot be found in any other County. The origin of the term 'rape' is unknown but it is believed to come from the Icelandic measure, 'hrapa' or it could well come from the Norman French word, 'rapiner' to plunder. There is evidence that William systematically laid waste to much of the County in his efforts to form a strong bridgehead for his troops; Sussex was the nearest County to Normandy where reinforcements could be rushed in the event of a Saxon revolt, and in every Sussex 'rape', lesser castles and towers were built to support the main castle.

http://www.greatcastlesofwales.co.uk/
This homepage is my tribute to the country that has the finest and purest examples of fortified medieval architecture: the Castles of Wales . Here you will find the pictures, plans and history of some of the largest and important of those. The castles that you can visit on this site are just a little part of the many powerful fortifications located in Wales (the country counts more than 400 castles!), this is only my suggestion for a historical journey through the region: when you pass through the green landscapes of Wales the fortresses themselves will attract your attent with their high and magnificent walls.

A magnificent border fortress dating back to the 11th Century, extensively restored by Robert Adam in the mid 19th century with its riverside setting landscaped by Capability Brown.
It is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Northumberland, the Percy family, the largest landowners in the County, who have lived here since 1309.
The Percy's organised many of the defences against Scots raiding parties in the days of the Border Reivers.

http://www.ahss.org.uk/
The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland is concerned with the protection, preservation, study and appreciation of Scottish buildings. We have about 1500 members throughout Scotland and beyond, with six regional groups organising local activities and carrying out casework. We have three publications, the annual journal 'Architectural Heritage', the Magazine and the twice-yearly newsletter, 'AHSS News'. We have our own premises, providing offices and meeting rooms, the former Glasite Meeting House in the Edinburgh New Town. The richness of the architectural heritage of Scotland is famous throughout the world, yet that heritage of castles, mansions and garden landscapes, ecclesiastical and industrial sites, cities, towns, villages and individual buildings is constantly under threat and in need of protection. Membership of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, which protects this heritage, is a must for anyone interested in the country's architecture.
