When King Henry VIII left the Catholic church in 1538 , there was, in Britain, a very serious threat of invasion. Francis I of France and Emperor Charles V of Spain signed a treaty, and the Pope encouraged both nations to invade and attack. Although internal matters in both nations prevented them from invading straight away, the threat remained. So in the 1540s, an extensive campaign to fortify England was begun, with many of these forts on or around the Isle of Wight. In 1497, the first dry-dock in Britain had been built in Portsmouth, and this made it the home of the Royal Navy. It also made it one of the prime targets for invasion, and Henry VIII's strategy was to defend all harbours, and to deny the enemy any harbour or anchorage that could be used to establish a base from which to organise a more serious assault. Four castles were built on the Isle of Wight; Sandown, East Cowes Castle, West Cowes Castle, and Yarmouth, with Sharpenode blockhouse built over the Needles Passage. On the Mainland near the Isle of Wight, Hurst Castle, Calshot Castle, Southsea Castle, Netley Castle and St Andrew's Point blockhouse were built to support this.

Located on the Isle of Skye, Armadale Castle is really a mansion, not a true fortress. The castle was built in 1815 for Lord MacDonald of Sleat. Clan Donald has a history stretching back 1300 years. It is a history of fighting and diplomacy, of governing, of clearances, of triumph and of defeat. The Museum of the Isles tells this history of the Headship of the Gael.
ARMADALE CASTLE
Scotland
United Kingdom
It's a large castellated mansion, dominated by a tall turreted and battlemented tower, and was built for Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, in 1855. The castle became their holiday home, and it is still often used by the royal family. Robert II had a hunting seat here, but by 1390 a stone castle had been built. The lands were held by the Gordon family, but passed to the Farquharsons of Inverey in 1662. In 1852 Prince Albert bought the estate, and in 1855 had the present mansion built, demolishing the remains of the old castle. Gardens, grounds and exhibitions open to the public.

Aberdeen
World Facts Index United Kingdom Old Aberdeen
North-east of the city centre, this district is characterised by narrow, winding, cobbled streets and lanes, historic buildings (in granite of course), and bohemian atmosphere, no doubt influenced by the strong student presence. From 1489-1891, Old Aberdeen was actually an independent burgh, and maintained its own Town House which is still standing today. Other interesting sights include King's College and St. Machar's Cathedral, which was founded in 580AD, although the building which can be visited now is relatively new, dating from the 12th Century. Architecture in this district pre-dates the grand-scale 19th Century town-planning which is responsible for most of the city centre. City Centre
The main street in central Aberdeen is Union Street, which stretches about 1 mile from the West End towards the Harbour in the east. Most of the city's major museums, civic buildings and attractions can be found on or near Union Street, often housed in what were once genteel granite residences. West End
While this area has less to offer in the way of historic attractions, you will find a wealth of restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels on these vibrant streets. Most of the buildings here are beautiful designs by Archibald Simpson and John Smith, but sadly many have been neglected and now possess a slightly dilapidated charm.

Although the terms castle and palace have been used interchangeably for centuries, there are in fact distinctions which separate the two types of structures. A castle is a fortified building whose primary purpose is to provide security or defend a territory from one's enemies. A palace, in contrast, is a building whose primary function is that of a luxurious and often eccentric abode. Palaces predate castles by several centuries, with their first appearance being in the Egyptian and Middle Eastern civilizations of ancient history. Although castles are no longer recognized as a means of security from foes, palaces will continue to be built as long as there are people who can afford them. EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS

    AND NORTHERN IRELAND
    Architecture
Belarus lies on a spiritual boundary of the Eastern and Western Europe, in the break of their cultural areas and religion systems. In the natural-and-geographic sense, Belarus is divided into the northern and southern parts, differed in their relief pattern, water systems, vegetation character. Naturally, all that told on specificity of architecture, as it is more than other arts dependent on natural and climatic conditions, availability of local building materials. In the 13th century under threats from the East (Tatar-Mongolian invasion) and from the West (expansion of the Teutonic Knights' Order) the Great Lithuanian Principality was formed, the present Belarus becoming its territorial kernel. The period of total defense architecture set on. The main type of monumental constructions were castles of princes and magnates with powerful walls and towers built of huge boulders and big-sized bricks, surrounded by ramparts and ditches. The donjon tower in Kamenets (13th century), castles in Lida, Krevo (14th century), Mir, Nesvizh, Grodno (16th century) remained. First Catholic cult constructions bore artistic features of Central Europe "brick" Gothic. More numerous then Orthodox churches transformed into small fortresses flanked with battle towers in their corners. All the neighboring population gathered in them in case of military hazard, because villages and small towns were utterly wood-built. Fortress-type churches preserved in Synkovichi, Maly Mojeikov (16th century). Houses were built far away from each other because of frequent fires. The economic and cultural revival of Belarusian towns began in the 16th century, promoted by the all-European Reformation movement. Of numerous Protestant directions Calvinism left a special trace in architecture of Belarus, the biggest magnates were its adherents. A considerable number of Calvinist "assembles" combining cult features of Protestantism with aesthetics of northern Renaissance were raised on their money.
