Then when I was a bit older, during the summer school breaks I used to hitch hike around the country and went to see the castle on several occasions. Then after nineteen years of absence I have seen the castle again. One can't imagine how huge this structure is, as this is the largest Royal Gothic castle in Central Europe. Its site has been inhabited since the 5th millennium BC. Large part of the castle has been renovated and turned into a museum and the restoration continues. Spiš ranks among the most remarkable Slovak regions. It covers the north-western part of the Eastern Slovakia Region. It abounds not only in Nature's beauties but also in the preserved medieval art-historical monuments, mostly from the Gothic period, that occupy an important place in European context. Nearly in all the villages and small towns we can find a worthy sacral or secular architecture, precious winged altars, interesting objects of arts and crafts or valuable frescos. Since the 12th century the country is dominated by the Spiš Castle, once the seat of the high-ranking Hungarian aristocratic families and custodians, the castle has been a symbol of the Spiš Region.

Castle II As we leave the Old Dee Bridge and the roar of the weir behind us
, we come to a section of Chester's ancient city walls that has undergone considerable changes over the centuries.
Without doubt this piece of high ground round which the River Dee sweeps in a gradual curve has had strategic importance from earliest times, and around the year 907AD, the Saxons of Mercia under Aethelfleda , as part of their re-occupation of the old Roman fortress, erected a fortified base here and incorporated it into their extension to the walls, to serve as part of their defences against the Danes, then being driven out of Ireland and looking for new lands to occupy.
Of this Saxon castle no trace remains and very little more is known of the site until the winter of 1069-70, when the army of Duke William of Normandy came to Saxon Chester, which became the last remaining great town in England to fall to the Conqueror's sword during the final stages of the

Architecture-(b) Military: Castles and Peels
The early castles of Peebles and Selkirk, as in other parts of Great Britain, were at first palisaded earth-works upon which were erected strongholds of timber. Hence Peel, which at first meant a wooden stockade, from the French pel Latin palus, a stake, came to designate a fortification with a building inside it, the enclosure as distinct from the building being known as the barmkyn. This wooden building was strengthened with an exterior coating of turf and clay. To prevent this wall of turf and clay from collapsing, the rigid structure of timber was built with its four sides sloping inwards, and when stone and lime were substituted for wood and turf the pyramidal form was preserved. In 1535 every landed Borderer possessing £100 worth of land was compelled by law to build a barmkyn of stone and lime upon his heritage and lands, with a tower in the same if he thought fit. It was at this time, therefore, that most of the Border keeps of stone and lime were built.

Development of the English Castle
This article is the first in a series which attempts to outline the development of the English Medieval castle and to describe its major features. Where possible, reference is made to existing castles within a comfortable day's journey of London so that the visitor who wishes to view a selection of English castles, but has limited time at his or her disposal, need not travel far from the capital. Perhaps the first issue to be dealt with is an answer to the question, "what is a castle?" The English Medieval castle, like its counterparts in Europe, is a unique phenomenon. Most buildings are created to fulfil a single, specific purpose: a church, a house, a factory, a school, a bank, a hotel etc. A castle, depending upon the status of the man who occupied it, could be variously, a military base, a seat of government, a court and a stronghold for the surrounding region. It could be any or all of the above but it was principally the private residence of its owner, his family and his dependents. England had known fortifications before the advent of the castle. The Iron Age peoples of Ancient Britain fortified hilltops with massive earthworks, such as Maiden Castle in Dorset, for tribal defense. The Romans dotted the countryside with innumerable military encampments and built the impressive chain of fortresses, known as the Saxon Shore forts (e.g. Portchester Castle, below)

The Mediaeval Houses or Castles of Ireland.
By W. F. Wakeman [From Duffy's Hibernian Magazine, Vo. III, No. 16, October 1861] One result of the attention which has recently been given to the study of the architectural works of the middle ages remaining in these islands, and upon the continent of Europe, is that the buildings of each country, or even large province, have been found to exhibit to a greater or less degree certain national or provincial distinctions, which owe their origin either to local circumstances or to the peculiar habits and genius of the people who designed them. That the ancient edifices of Ireland, whether lay or ecclesiastical, bear a strong national character, there can be no doubt. An Irish castle or tower house of the thirteenth century, for instance, is as unlike an English edifice of the same period and character, as the mediaeval Celt from the Anglo-Norman settler. At the same time in Ireland, as elsewhere, the work of each century can be distinctly traced in the mouldings and decorations, or other features of the building, whether it be found in the old district of the Pale, or in the remote islands of the western coast. It was the fashion not very long ago, even amongst Irishmen, to ascribe all the rough and clumsy work remaining in the country from old times, to native workmen, while the glorious edifices of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, such as Jerpoint Abbey, or Knockmoy, though admittedly founded by native princes, must, according to their theory, have been erected by foreign architects and builders.

The Scottish Chateau: The Country House of Renaissance Scotland
Charles McKean

The conclusion must be, then, that this book is the first stage of a definitive treatment of the Scottish Renaissance castle. So far, McKean has taken the McGibbon and Ross legacy of evidence drawn from the built fabric, expanded and enhanced it, brought it up to date, and proposed a novel and polemical interpretation of its cultural context. He should now follow up this invaluable work with an exhaustive search for the documentary evidenceevidence that will undoubtedly emerge, given a sufficiently painstaking approachto sustain his bold and exciting theory of the romantic Renaissance castle.

Himeji Castle Almost every country in the world has castles. Castles express the lifestyles, standards of living, cultures, customs, and religions of the people who lived in and around them. Japanese castles are no exception. There are many types of functions, characteristics, and features of Japanese castles which resemble those of castles in other countries. One Japanese castle, Himeji Castle, has been recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1993. According to Himeji Castle: The World Cultural Heritage , “The ‘Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (the World Heritage Convention)’ was adopted at the General Conference of U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1972, with an objective of preserving irreplaceable testimonies of past civilizations and natural landscapes of great beauty and significance. Cultural and natural legacies are inscribed on the World Heritage List when they are recognized to be of exceptional interest and universal value in accordance with this convention. There are two categories of the World Heritage; one is Cultural and the other is Natural.

Gardens Guide HOMEPAGE GARDEN TOURS GARDEN FINDER GARDEN DESIGN ... Mirabell The greatest of the imperial castles, Schönbrunn , is not wholly wanting in the same spirit, in spite of its immense size, and in spite of the propelling power of its well-known rivalry with Versailles. Schönbrunn had belonged to the emperor ever since the sixteenth century, but in 1683 the shooting-box, built in the Italian manner, was destroyed by fire. Thirteen years later, with new noblemen’s castles growing up everywhere round Vienna, we hear about fresh building at Schönbrunn. The bold first design of Fischer von Erlach shows the spirit that was then alive at Vienna in matters of art. The castle was to stand at the altitude of the present Gloriette , and the hill below was to be converted. into great terraces, the supporting walls held up by architectural niches, with water-devices and parterres on the terraces, Above, in front of the castle, there was to be a circular pond on a terrace of a similar kind, A great court of honour, meant for games, was to form the end of the place in front, and it is like what we have to-day in the same part in front of the castle. A cascade in seven streams falls foaming over the rocks, This plan might truly rival the fairest villas of Italy—nay, it might eclipse them. An inscription under the picture says that there was a desire to get the grand view from the top, and that the park was to be laid out on the land that sloped gently towards Hetzendorf.
