To Revive or Not?
The question that seems to be on everyone's mind - should we rebuild New Orleans or not? Interestingly, there has been quite some debate going on as the city resurfaces from the sickening flood. The city may be uninhabitable for at least six months and the people that have left may not return. It is thus important to ask, what parts of New Orleans should we preserve. It is a city along with San Francisco that is home to " the greatest collection of 18th-, 19th- and early-20th-century residential architecture in the United States You're talking about miles and miles of historic properties .", says Reed Kroloff, Dean of School of Architecture, Tulane University.

PRACTICALITIES
Hotels: How strenuous? Small group: the tour will operate with between 14 and 22 participants.
DESCRIPTION
I ebbed and flowed, but until 1919 the Habsburg Empire had been the largest territorial entity in Europe, Russia excepted. Comprising much of central and eastern Europe, it was a multi-lingual, multi-cultural agglomeration of territories and peoples so diffuse and various that by the end of the twentieth century it had been divided between a dozen other countries and successor states. Heterogeneous yet strangely homogenous: despite difference, and the almost arbitrary process by which the constituent parts gradually succumbed to Habsburg rule over a period of 645 years, the common features are striking. The incessant interplay between variety and unity constitutes an underlying theme of the tour. The tour presents the architectural and artistic treasures of the region in the context of its history, highlighting key episodes and themes. The Habsburg rulers themselves will of course come in for scrutiny, as will their principal supports, the aristocracy, the army and the Catholic Church. But probing beyond traditional political and dynastic history, pictures emerge of life in the great country houses above and below stairs, of the lives of artists and musicians, of the Jewish communities, of the competing nationalities. While the tour is based in five cities, four of which are modern-day capitals, equal attention is given to the provinces and countryside. The area abounds with picturesque small towns, magnificent country houses, charming villages, once-powerful abbeys and bountiful scenery.

Japanese Garden
Imperial Palace Overview Overview Chinese architecture has historically influenced that of Japan. In spite of this, there are still major differences between the two. One variation with Japanese architecture typically placed people on the floor to sit, whereas that of China had them sitting in chairs. This custom began to change though in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Another influence, besides lifestyle, is the climate. Japanese have to plan according to the climate and season changes. Since most of Japan has long, hot summers, the houses reflect that by being somewhat raised so that air can move all around. Wood is a popular choice for material because it adjusts well to earthquakes and works well with season changes (cool in summer, warm in winter).

Description
Dave Eberly's 3D Game Engine Design was the first professional guide to the essential concepts and algorithms of real-time 3D engines and quickly became a classic of game development. Dave's new book 3D Game Engine Architecture continues the tradition with a comprehensive look at the software engineering and programming of 3D engines. This book is a complete guide to the engineering process, starting with a walk-through of the graphics pipeline showing how to construct the core elements of 3D systems, including data structures, the math system, and the object system. Dave explains how to manage data with scene graphs, how to build rendering and camera systems, and how to handle level of detail, terrain, and animation. Advanced rendering effects such as vertex and pixel shaders are also covered as well as collision detection and physics systems. The book concludes with a discussion of application design, development tools, and coding standards for the source code of the new version of the Wild Magic engine included on the CD-ROM. Wild Magic is a commercial-quality game engine used by many companies and is a unique resource for the game development community.

Abstract
This document describes the system architecture of the RS/6000 Enterprise Server Model S80. Special attention in this edition is given to the newly developed copper technology RS64 III processor. The major components; processors, memory, I/O subsystem, and the interconnecting buses are all described. Most of the components used are new designs and contribute to the continued outstanding balanced performance, reliability, and scalability of the "S" family of RS/6000 systems. Introduction
The IBM RS/6000 S family consists of the new S80 and the earlier S70 and S70 Advanced Systems. The S family is IBM's RS/6000 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) server family for high-end commercial performance. In addition, it is ideally poised for the future in that it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications running concurrently. It uses the new copper technology enhanced PowerPC RS64 III processor and is offered in 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-way configurations. The S80 also includes a greatly enhanced set of central electronic complex (CEC) support logic. More specifically, the memory controller complex was dramatically updated. The S family was the first RS/6000 system to exploit the true 64-bit large memory addressing capabilities of AIX 4.3. The S family also has a rich set of reliability features. Rack Packaging
The S family models consist of two physical enclosures. The first is the central electronics complex that contains processor cards, the memory controller complex backplane, memory cards, power supplies, and cooling units. The CEC cards are packaged in "books" for added reliability. Book packaging is described as cards that are sandwiched between two sheets of metal for protection, proper insertion and retention, and optimum air flow.

Encounters with virtual reality are no longer an unusual occurrence. We have become used to fly-through systems that allow architects to explore the details of a structure by moving rapidly though a series of images on a computer screen, and with systems where users put on gloves and goggles to manipulate virtual objects that seem to be actually there.
II
One of the dreams of those who wield power has been to rule the entire world. In the Middle Ages, kings sought to maintain and expand their kingdoms. Lords sought to expand their domains. Stewards sought to administer their provinces in peace. In feudal society, these were the basic requirement for admission into the structure of power. In one form or another, members of all of these classes held land. Even if were not the whole world, it was gratifying to do as one pleased with oneÕs own corner of the world. The reason is that land is the reality of the world. Land that was possessed in this way had some kind of form. It was a real object. When people came into possession of a piece of land without any meaning, land that was simply an object, they felt the need to infuse it with meaning. Objects could not continue to be simply objects without any meaning. A classic example of endowing land with meaning is furnished by the garden. The emperor Hadrian, one of the five wise emperors of ancient Rome, built an enormous villa on the outskirts of the capital at Tibur (modern Tivoli). The garden contained depictions of memorable places he had visited throughout his life. An example from Tokyo is the Rikugien garden in Komagome. This garden was built by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a favorite minister of the fifth Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It was designed as a series of allusions to 88 famous sites mentioned in classical poetry.

59. Journeys To Glory... Prague

Journeys to Glory... Prague by Helen Splarn - Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech Republic
Situated on the river Vltava, Prague is one of the most spectacular cities in Europe. Geographically it also lies at the centre of Europe and has served as the crossroads for many ancient trade routes. This unique position has influenced the formation of Europe as the east and west divided. This is as true in the arts as it is in politics and religion. In response, Prague created a mysterious and beautiful city that has inspired the imagination and fuelled the human soul.
The struggle between eastern Europe and the west is still seen today, as the gap between progress and tradition draws closer. 60 million visitors come to Prague every year to try and capture on film that which has been lost in the west. Yet what they seek cannot be seen, it is in the very fibre of the buildings, in their richness and harmony. It is an internal recognition of something higher, something greater than ourselves. Throughout history these great architects, sculptors and artists have created a reflection of their own inner beauty, making Prague a city of enlightened creativity.
In order to understand the Prague of today we have to travel back to a time when legend and folklore were intertwined with everyday events. From the beginning Prague has always been seen as a woman and a mother, Her origins are veiled in mystery stretching far back into history, to a mystical time when the gifted and magical Princess Libuse had a vision.

Each country in Europe developed its own architectural designs copying from that of the castles in other countries. The race to build castles as the best military defenses, turned into a competition for the most magnificent architectural designs in the world. Battle and beauty were now married together.
