GRODNO
I live in Grodno. I go to school here. I was born here and it is m y native town, the town of my Childhood and youth. So it is very dear for me. From history lessons, from visits to History Museum I get to know more and more about my town. Towns like people have their own history, their own life. Grodno i s an ancient Belarusian town. It history dates back to the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in the Ipatev Chronicles in 1128. Grodno has a great and eventful past. It has lived through hardships of many wars. Monuments and reliks of almost every period of human history, begining from the 12-th century, can be found there: The Kolozhskaya Church built in the 12-th century, the Old King's Castle, famous for its architecture dating back to the 16-th century, the House Museum of the famous Polish writer Elisa Ozheshko. Grodno is situated on the crossroads of commercial and military ways, that determined its destiny. The river Nieman divides Grodno into two

My goal for this new section of "The Traveling Knight" is to enlighten
you about the glorious wonders to be seen in the United States. You may
notice a contrast in the original building purpose of these magnificent
structures between the Americans' display of wealth versus a portion of
other countries' castles and their necessity for safety during battles.
As time progresses forward most can be appreciated for their distinct beauty and history. I would like to begin with my favorite, The Grand Daddy of them all. The most famous American Castle would have to be George Washington Vanderbilt's "country retreat", Biltmore. A 250 room French Renaissance Chateau surrounded by 8,000 acres of forest, located near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore is the largest private

‘Useful, beautiful and well-written ... indispensable’ – Scotland on Sunday
Extract from the text
Conclusion

Can we, finally, isolate any common themes that draw together the centuries, even millennia, spanned by our story? We have to begin cautiously, as most definitions of ‘national identity’ are highly subjective constructions defined as much by the perceptions of others as by any innate essence, and this subjectivity is compounded when a series of these definitions is strung together into a ‘tradition’. Common sense tells us that there can be no direct cultural or spiritual link, for example, between the builders of chambered tombs and the architects of today. This point is only underlined by the many past attempts to construct or evoke ‘national tradition’, all hopelessly beset by conflicting definitions.
But paradoxically, the most important ‘tradition’ of all, especially in the more recent time from the 16th century onwards, has been the constant eager embrace of radical change and discontinuity – to a degree unmatched by any other small country. Scotland had hardly completed its revolutionary purge of the trappings of conventional religious architecture when its union with England, and its welcome as a full partner in the empire, opened up a succession of even more dramatic ruptures in the built environment. Improvement, urbanization, industrial growth: each was matched by an ever bolder architectural diversity, until the climax was reached in the fearsomely vigorous architectural culture of Thomson, Burnet, Geddes and Mackintosh.

the castles and country houses of England and Wales.
Weaving together architectural, political, military, and social history, you will trace the fascinating story of how and why the ruling class residence evolved from defensive stronghold to domestic mansion. These structures represent a visual history of nearly 1000 years of architecture and culture as well as military, social, and political change. Rising and expanding, or falling into decay, in accordance with the fortunes, character, and changing tastes of their owners, the castles and country houses of England and Wales present us with messages both engaging and thought-provoking.

Becoming More a Part of the World
by Maggie Berwind-Dart Everyone has a story from his or her life that illustrates the complex beauty of the world we live in. I’ve often thought that one of most appealing and enduring aspects of travel, particularly travel though a foreign country, is the way it fills you out as an individual, gives you a broader range of knowledge and experience on which to build a sense of self and place. The stories I’ve heard from friends who have traveled and lived far from home all reflect this broadened perspective, this heightened sense of who they are which they achieved by forgetting themselves for a while. In paying attention to what other people make of life, these friends of mine augmented and altered their views on life here at home in the United States. The philosopher Pascal once said that much if not all of what we do in life is done so we can tell others of our great accomplishment and adventure, rather than for the sheer joy of the experience itself. Though I resonate with some of his ideas, here I find his observation on a human habit a little too cynical for my taste. I think the stories we tell one another, the experiences we cherish and share, bring life to relationships and allow people to learn from one another. It is with this in mind that I offer my story of the semester I spent living in a remote castle in the Netherlands.

    Tour of Vysehrad Castle
The weather today was much improved - sunny but not boiling. We waited in reception for our driver to arrive to take us for our boat trip and tour of Vysehrad castle. When the driver appeared we recognised him straight away - it was the same man who had collected us from the airport on Monday morning. After collecting a few other people along the way from other hotels, he deposited us at a meeting point for the tour company. However, our bus was late - it had been involved in an accident somewhere in the town centre. Consequently, the tour guide had to do a lot of talking even before we'd seen anything, just to pass the time. Also on our tour were a couple from Rio de Janeiro and a couple of old ladies from Suffolk. The two ladies, who were sisters, seemed to be whingers at first, but we warmed to them later. On the tour we saw loads we'd seen already seen on postcards and the tour guide was a mine of useful information, telling us the history of all that we saw. Only thing is because of the delay earlier, he was flying through everything too fast so you were lucky if you heard him or even saw what he was talking about. This was not going to change throughout the tour!
    Prazske Jezulatko
We then took a minibus ride back to the old town area with the guide giving us a running commentary on anything we drove past, again enlightening us on bits of Prague (and the Czech Republic) history at lightning speed. The guide also pointed out the family home of PM Vaclav Havel which was smack bang next to one of Prague's new architectural offerings, The Dancing Lady. We made a mental note to go and have a look at this strange building later.

    Copenhagen Information
Canals, lakes and the sea form the backdrop to modern Copenhagen and are a reminder of the citys heritage as a major Baltic port. This role is also reflected in the citys name, København , a corruption of købmanne hafen or merchants harbour. The citys foundation dates back to 1167, when Bishop Absalon built a bastion on the island of Slotsholmen, today the site of Christiansborg Palace and the Danish parliament. In 1417, the city became the royal capital of a huge swathe of Scandinavia that included not just Denmark but parts of Sweden and Norway. Many of Copenhagens most impressive buildings were constructed during the celebrated reign of Christian IV (15881648). Existing monuments of the monarchs grand building schemes include the Børsen (Stock Exchange), the

Other pillars are placed every 2m around the tower; when the median pillars are included, pillars are spaced one meter apart for an extremely sturdy construction. In the corners, diagonal braces as thick as the pillars are inserted to provide resistance to earthquakes. Although the original donjons possessed stud wall framing finished on both sides only at the base (so that the pillar could not be seen from the front, as in storehouses), the walls were completely painted in white for both esthetic and defensive reasons. This enabled the structure to support its added weight. The latticework of the windows was also filled in after steel plates were attached. The roofs consist of undulating gables and dormer gables, changing the view at every floor. Through these ingenious devices of form and function, Himeji Castle is an enduring marvel.
