David Larkin "Shortly after I arrived in America, my wife took me on a drive through the countryside of New England..."

Book Description: David Larkin, an internationally known editor and book designer, first tasted country living at the age of three, as a refugee from wartime London in rural England. Country Wisdom, the first in a projected series of three volumes, is centered around country houses and their outbuildings. Larkin offers a lively, informative text and more than 200 full-color photographs. The text includes everything from vernacular architecture in a historical perspective to restoration and maintenance; from country customs to seasonal festivals; from the kitchens of resourceful country cooks to the secrets of underground storage; from traditional recipes for cleaning formulas to the proper pitch of a roof.

History and architectural development
The Helfštýn castle ranks among the most extensive castles in Europe and it is one of the best preserved castle complexes in the Czech Republic. Individual architectural groups arose from the beginning of the l4th up to the end of the l8th centuries. In this time interval, the castle was systematically reconstructed and widened. Its building development, however, was strongly influenced by deliberate damanging, ordered by Austrian military administration in Vienna in the year 1656. Further deterioration was then note in the first half of the l9th century. In spite of that, the ramparts remained intact all over the periphery and also the stone walls of individual buildings are well-preserved. Only ceilings and roofs did not survive.
In its present appearance, the castle has the character of an extensive architecture of fortification with six gates, a number of dungeons and buildings and with a recognisable system of mounds extending down to the locality of Týn upon Beèva. The Helfštýn castle performed its important military function as a base of Hussites agains the German catholic town of Olomouc as well as in support of troops of the king Jirí of Podìbrady against the Hungarian king Mathias Corvin. The castle also accomplished its important role during the Thirty Years' War and in the course of the Turkish threat to Moravia.
The castle belonged to significant feudal lines, members of which had certain ideas about their residence according to their economic power and social prestige. The dwelling function of the building developed accordingly. The inner castle was founded at the beginning of the l4th century by Friduš of Linava. The complex construction development of the building is best documented by the building of the castle palace. Today's two palace wings arose by connection of two separate palaces, of the two-storeyed northern palace belonging to Vok I of Kravare and of the eastern tower palace belonging to Drslav of Kravare.

The Mir Castle Mir Castle is a unique monument of Belarusian architecture of the 16th century. It was founded by Duke Ilinich near the village called Mir at the end of the 15th century. He built the castle instead of the wooden farmstead that existed there. During hundreds of years, Mir Castle was time and then destroyed and restored. In the year 2000, this construction was added to Unesco's World Heritage list. And now the castle is being successfully restored. The original construction was in Gothic style, but as the building was subsequently reconstructed, it absorbed architectural styles of Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance. For instance, in 1568, the castle passed into the hands of Dukes Radziwils. Soon afterwards the Dukes completed the building in Renaissance style. The red-brick castle is a square-planned building with towers at the corners. The fifth tower has a drawbridge and a forged grille. Mir Castle was built as a fortress and it was adapted for armed attacks. The defensive elements give the building a certain solemnity.

And the jewel amongst the Castle gardens is the Royal Garden. For centuries the Royal Garden was kept as a closed garden belonging to the seat of the king or later the President of the Republic. Until November 1989 it was seldom open, but at Easter in 1990 the President of the Republic, Vaclav Havel, decided that the garden should be open to the public and should start to give up its secrets.

Nihon no kokoro - The Heart Within
Cassette Titel The heart within This first program ist designed to introduce the series. It is an overview of the concepts, traditions and cultural aspects of Japan which will be discussed and illustrated in the subsequent programs. The intention of Kokoro is to reach beyond the surface information and discover the deeper values and motivations which distinguish the Japanese people. The meaning of eNihon no Kokorof is given and the goals of the series are stated. ?The goal of Nihon no Kokoro is to find the heart within Japan ... the heart within itfs people. Kokoro will view Japan from within. It is a 11 part series designed to help the viewer understand the unique perspective of the Japanese; what is important to them, why they respond and believe the way they do. To find the heart within Japan is to find that which gives meaning to life... what matters most to the individual, to the group, to country." Shinto: Way of the Gods Bushido: Way of the warrior Bushido is the name given to the strict code of honor and duty which was developed between the samurai and their lords. This is difficult concept to understand because the price of honor is often death. This concept is illustrated by telling the tragic story of the 47 samurai of Ako who willingly took their own lives by seppuku in honor to their fallen lord. This is a story beloved by the Japanese people. As part of the samurai culture, castels and castle architecture is discussed along with the unique relationship between a lord and his samurai. Bushido has been called the soul of Japan. This code has been said to sum up the moral and religious qualities of the Japanese people. Bushido is manifest in the modern national ethic and moral values regarded by the Japanese people. Much of Japanfs group heritage is due to their orientation around the qualities of Bushido and Japanfs early farming based culture.

Castles, Chateaux, Monasteries and Other Memorials in the Èeský Krumlov Region
The Èeský Krumlov region is remarkably abundant in religious and non-religious monuments that draw the attention of its visitors. We can find here many castles, chateaux, monasteries and churches which tell us very much of the history of the Èeský Krumlov region. The forming of the region from the historical point of view was influenced by the presence of the significant aristocratic family of the Rosenbergs and also by the activity of the Cistercian Vyšší Brod Monastery and Zlatá Koruna Monastery by means of which high Gothic architecture, influenced by so-called Podunajská architecture, arrived in our country. On the other side we cannot omit the significance of gentry life on the country forts and little castles. At the time of Middle Ages the castle architecture took up the front place among secular buildings. The castles were the residences of aristocracy, the ownership helped their owners to raise themselves above nobles, they performed residential, administrative and also defensive functions. The castles mostly situated on places of importance from the strategic point of view (hills, headlands, rivers) had in various modifications in appearance a similar character made of a palace, tower and fortifications with walls and moats. Among the most significant examples of this castle architecture are the Rožmberk nad Vltavou Castle and Dívèí Kámen Castle , that were owned by the Rosenbergs.
