Guerba Guerba Tours Europe Latin America Africa ... Free Brochure Walking tours in Germany, why there
Mediaeval buildings with lots of timber and plenty of folklore surrounded by lush green woodlands make fantastic settings for visually enticing tours. The castles are arguably unsurpassed and quality beer comes in large vessels at essential 'stop offs' by the way of impressive old inns.
This is a land of cuckoo clocks and some seriously over the top Baroque and Rococo architecture, sometimes quite fantastic in nature to match the castles.
Downside: the weather can be wet, though it is beautifully green as a result. The Baroque architecture and interiors may be too much for some people's tastes but the mediaeval bits are plentiful and outstanding so you could easily ignore bits you don't like. Where to go in Germany:
Despite a heavily industrial history Germany has several excellent regions for walking tours which are very rural in character.

Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin
P otsdam, the former seat of the Prussian kings and with a past covering more than 1000 years, presents itself as the capital of the federal state of Brandenburg. T he 18th- and 19th-century castles, palaces, churches and parks are significant architectural monuments of theWorld Cultural Heritage and give visitors the opportunity of experiencing Prussian and German history. All over the world Sans Souci is associated with Rococo architecture and landscaping and also with the person and life of the Prussian king Frederick the Great , the "philosopher" of Sans Souci. Y et the UNESCO World Heritage encompasses much more than this. The New Garden with its Cecilienhof Palace , which was made famous by the Potsdam Declaration, Babelsberg Park with the former summer residence of the Emperor William I, Babelsberg Castle, are just as much a part of this as are the Sacrow Church of the Redeemer, the idyllic Peacock Island and Glienicke Castle and Park , belonging to Berlin.

Hof is located on the German-Czech border where the old East German border connected with Czechlaslovakia. I toured a castle near Hof, within 1 day's drive of Hof, and still have 3 or 4 pictures of the interior courtyard, and one of part of the front, but no signs, and my memory has long faded of the direction or distance. If there are pictures of this castle, I would like to compare them to the ones I took in '63. The Best Castles
During the Middle Ages, Germany was divided into many intensely competitive feudal states and principalities. This unstable atmosphere encouraged the construction of fortified castles. As hostilities died down, architects began to design for comfort, style, and prestige, adding large windows, gilded stucco and plaster, frescoes, and formal gardens. As a result, Germany is full of all kinds and styles of castles (Burg) and palaces (Schloss). Sans Souci Palace , Potsdam: Frederick the Great's retreat, where he came to read, listen to music, and generally renew his allegiance to the principles of the Enlightenment, is Germany's most successful blend of landscape and architecture. The more than 120 hectares (300 acres) of intricately landscaped gardens have enough pavilions, fountains, orangeries, and heroic statues to keep a visitor intrigued for days. The palace itself is an architectural highlight, approached by a terraced staircase of sublime beauty. Schloss Wartburg , Eisenach: Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, this was the headquarters of the Landgraves of Thuringia, a center of patronage for the troubadours (Minnesinger) of Germany, and a place of refuge for Martin Luther, who completed his translation of the Bible within its massive walls. Wagner used it as inspiration for the setting of

Castles of Latvia
Foreword
For its modest size, the Baltic Republic of Latvia offers a surprisingly wide array of castle architecture, spanning from early 13 th century up to the beginning of the 20th. Shown here is an alphabetically arraigned cross-section, by no means extensive, in photographs made by the author. Joost Lemmens N.B.: Old German names in brackets. Page may take some time to load! Skip Intro Go to Links
Introduction Before their christianisation, the Baltic and Finnish tribes living on the territory of what is now the republic of Latvia built large numbers of hilltop fortresses, but as these were all made of wood only the characteristically shaped castle mounds remain. Building in stone and brick began only after the arrival of Christian missionaries and the knight crusaders sent to convert the heathen tribes. The combination of west-European feudalism, strict militarism and their expansion in a hostile and ethnically foreign land where they remained a culturally separate entity, resulted in a wide array of castle architecture. Furthermore, Livonia, as it was then known, was hardly a uniform state, but rather a checkerboard of knightly and ecclesiastic possessions. Conflicts between the Livonian Order and the Archbishopric of Riga went from animosity to open warfare, with the citizens of Riga and other cities becoming an important factor too.

ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS
Star Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have upended typical Hamburg bureaucracy by taking their proposal for a new concert hall straight to the people, rather than the bureaucrats.

DPA Herzog and de Meuron's design for the Elbe Philharmonic. The German port city of Hamburg best known as one of Europe's biggest ports and media centers is set to gain fame as an architectural attraction. At least that's what city officials hope. Since 1997, the city has been undertaking an ambitious development of a major section of its harbor area as a means of extending its city center by 40 percent. Technology has allowed the port to increase its productivity and container-processing capacity to the point that the city has actually been able to grow the port's output while at the same time shrinking its physical size.

Fine Arts
Michaelangelo achieved extraordinary control of his work by chipping marble away a layer at a time to obtain the precise form he had envisioned. His sculpture of David took three years to carve from a nineteen foot block of stone in this way. Many of his later unfinished sculptures which were made using the same technique, give strong impressions of objects formed by stereolithography caught in the moment of rising from a vat of resin, but hardened and frozen in time. While this was certainly not a rapid or an additive process, it is a multi-degree of freedom layered fabrication technique conceptually similar to some forms of modern rapid prototyping technology. Today, layered fabrication is being used by an increasing number of artists to build a wide variety of sculptural objects. Some of these works are realistic and representational while others are abstract. The abstract objects can be the result of pure imagination and artistic free will, or may be derived solely from mathematics or computation. Some of the works created with rapid prototyping may not have been possible to make any other way.
Jewelry Design
Jewelry and the related arts have been particularly affected. Some systems manufacturers, such as Meiko in Japan and Solidscape (formerly Sanders) in the US, have concentrated on this application. There are also service bureaus and university programs which emphasize the design and manufacture of jewelry using rapid prototyping technology. The output of a rapid prototyping system is most often used as a pattern for lost-wax, or other types of casting methods in jewelry manufacture. Direct manufacture of jewelry is also a long-term possibility, however. While precious materials are not yet possible for direct output, a few artists are beginning to explore the use of the existing materials of processes such as selective laser sintering and stereolithography as final media.

Historical Old Town as a Cultural Heritage Heidelberg applies for inclusion on UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List The Conference of Education Ministers (Kultusministerkonferenz) has included Heidelberg (old part of the town, castle and surrounding landscape) in the preliminary German list for registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site following a decision taken on October 23, 1998. Among the 21 applications submitted by the federal states Heidelberg ranks 11th. in chronological order of the applications. The preliminary German list will be effective for the coming decade up to the year 2010. The registrations will be confirmed by formal applications. One application per year will be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Paris which will decide whether a site will be included on the World Heritage List. The "Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage" of November 16, 1972 and the most recent version of the "Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention" will be the basis for the admission procedure. The boundaries of the World Heritage area that were adopted for the application by the Heidelberg City Council in its meeting on 26 June 2003 correspond to the historically and archeologically verifiable city boundaries between 1392 and the 19th century. The area stretches from Karl's Gate in the east to Sofienstrasse in the west; in the north is confined by the Neckar and the Old Bridge and in the south by a line formed by Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, Klingentor and the southern edge of the Castle gardens. It is surrounded by a 'buffer zone', an area of restricted use.

But not all people experiencing schizophrenia are found inside of hospitals! Outside in the world all kinds of bizarre buildings and environments have been created by individuals possessed by idiosyncratic and compulsive visions. An obvious example would be the Palais Idéal of Ferdinand Cheval.( ) Another well known example of uniquely individual architectural design is the Watts Towers of Simon Rodia in Los Angeles.( The true schizophrenic tends generally to retreat from active involvement with his external environment. There are, however, rare exceptions to this rule. In America, the best candidate for an architectural environment reflective of serious psychopathology would have to be the famous Coral Castle outside of Miami, the work of self-taught architect, Edward Leedskalnin.(

Münsterland:
A Land of Moated Castles
By John Dornberg
"Everything is so settled here that everyone knows exactly everyone else's station and standing." So wrote Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Germany's preeminent 19th century poetess, 160 years ago about the Münsterland. She was born in 1797 and spent most of her life there in largely self-imposed but obviously bored literary seclusion, composing ballads and novellas, of which Die Judenbuche (The Jews' Beech Tree) is the best known. Today her portrait is in millions of wallets on the backsides of DM 20 notes and next year there will be a spate of events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of her birth. Yet, it often seems as if nothing has changed in her homeland, a Delaware-sized area on the North German plain between the Dutch border and the bustling coal-mining, steel-making Ruhr basin. Of course, there's majestic Münster itself, population 280,000, a bustling 1,200-year-old medieval city of winding cobblestone streets, Gothic churches and Renaissance patrician houses. It was in the wood- paneled council chamber of its town hall where the Peace of Westphalia, the treaty ending the Thirty Years War, was negotiated and signed in 1648. Its splendid 13th century St. Paul's Cathedral houses the tomb of Cardinal Clemens von Galen, the "Lion of Münster," who from the time of his appointment as bishop in 1933 until VE-Day 1945 roared loudly and preached militantly against the Nazis, despite all attempts by Berlin and the Vatican to silence him.
