Discovering the Best of Germany
Adapted From: Germany For Dummies, 2nd Edition Below is some of the best that Germany has to offer.
Discovering the best big German cities
Germany's top cities offer a wealth of diversions, as simple or as sophisticated as you want. You'll find world-class museums, music, cuisine of all kinds, great shopping, and plenty of nightlife. You'll also find elegant boulevards, riverside promenades, enormous parks, fascinating architecture, and plenty of picturesque corners just waiting to be discovered. And thanks to Germany's excellent public transportation systems, you can easily reach it all by subway, streetcar, or bus.
  • With its endlessly dramatic history and cache of cultural and artistic riches, Berlin always has a major-league buzz. But since 1989, when the Wall separating East Germany and West Germany came down, Germany's largest city and new capital has become an international superstar. The pulse of Berlin is felt throughout Europe, and when you're walking down Berlin's avenues, you'll feel it, too. Munich is a southern German city where the urban pleasures are as soft and sweet as Schlagsahne (whipped cream) on a rich slab of cake or as exuberant as an oom-pah-pah band in a giant beer hall during Oktoberfest. The capital of Bavaria is sensuous, sophisticated, and fun-loving, with countless cultural diversions and a kind of urban magic that snares the hearts of millions of visitors each year.

Richard Castle (b. Hesse, Germany 1695; d. 1751) Richard Castle was born in 1695 in Kassel, Hesse, Germany. Arriving in Dublin in 1728 from London, where he probably established contact with Lord Burlington's circle, he became the assistant and protege of Edward Lovett Pearce, a leading Irish Palladian. When Pearce died in 1733 Castle assumed his commissions, including a series of lavishly detailed country houses. In Dublin, Castle designed public buildings and several important aristocratic palazzi. He used a particularly robust and masculine Palladian style that was quite distinctive. He was particularly influenced by Pearce and by James Gibbs. Castle died in 1751. References

She is one of about 200 MSU students studying abroad this year. Thanks to an $8,000 fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service, the 21-year-old Laramie, Wyo. native explores German culture while discovering revolutionary design innovations. "I have chosen Europe because of the rich history of the development of Western architecture, and Germany specifically because of its history of using architecture as a means to rebuild the Germans' nation and communicate their identity," Schreibeis wrote in an e-mail. "And, I chose to study here because Germany is a leader in sustainable and environmentally conscientious designs." Schreibeis is one of 56 undergraduate students from 46 U.S. and Canadian universities selected for the scholarship. The German Academic Exchange Service is the largest international exchange organization in the world, supporting nearly 75,000 people each year, according to a press release from the German organization.

Romanesque Era
From roughly 950 to 1250 AD, the Romanesque, a massive building style that evokes the grand edifices of imperial Rome, shaped sacred and secular architecture throughout Europe. Characterized by high, thick walls, immense pillars, vaulted stone ceilings and rounded archways, the monasteries and cathedrals built in this style represented important advances in architectural engineering and construction of the day. Though largely overshadowed by the soaring Gothic masterpieces that followed them, the structures of the Romanesque are notable for the variations in style and trove of information they reveal about the Christian world of one millennia ago.

Baroque Gardens in Germany
Herrenhausen Wilhelmshöhe Schleissheim Nymphenburg ... Veitshochheim The princely seat of Karlsruhe (Fig. 462) shows how completely the idea of the garden which dominated the eighteenth century—that century of princes, as one may call it. FIG. 462. KARLSRUHE—THE CASTLE GARDEN IN 1739 In 1709 the Margrave Charles William of Baden-Durlach built himself a little shooting-box in the middle of the Hardtwald to serve him as his Trianon. A hunting-tower which was in an isolated position in front of the house, looking towards the wood, was the middle point for thirty-two walks that were cut in the surrounding wood. Even the ground-plan of the castle had to be arranged to suit the prince’s whim, and its side wings were set at an obtuse angle in a line with two avenues. The segment of the circle enclosed by these wings and the buildings that adjoined them farther along was laid out as a pleasure-garden the front part was enclosed by groups of buildings for the court nobles, or for servants’ use—one group between every two avenues—arranged in precisely the same way as at Nymphenburg . The oddness of the plan at the back was really grotesque; in the little circular bit round the tower there were twenty-four small houses, one at the starting-point of each avenue, varying in ground-plan, but all alike in size; each was provided with its own little garden, used for different purposes, as fountain-house, bath-house, pump-house, etc. The place round the tower was adorned with four fountains, and there were others put about in the thick of the wood where the avenues are cut.

Germany
We have already considered what was done by Prince Pückler in Germany in the first half of the century. His importance lay in the lofty enthusiasm with which he maintamed the interests of the garden, though he largely shared the weakness of his own day, in that he had no notion of how to lay out the parts near the house. It is difficult to see how the colour-gardens of which he speaks, the blue and the yellow, were managed. He may have taken the idea from Paris, possibly from Parc Monceau. He certainly had carpet-beds with flowers of many colours. Peter Lenné made a great name in North Germany as director of the garden at Potsdam. It was perhaps only the respect for the past felt by the master of the house that prevented the whole garden of Sans-Souci from being turned into a landscape park, with even its axial lines obliterated, for we know that Lenné had already executed designs for such a change. Happily he was content with having: boskets all round the place, but even then much was lost of the original form, Lenné mellowed as time went on, and when he had Schinkel as a fellow-worker, and as patron a man of so much artistic taste as King Frederick William IV.. He helped to create at Sans-Souci a work typical of the time of the Italian Renaissance. Under this king Potsdam with its surroundings grew to be one of the finest princely seats in existence. As early as 1825, while crown prince, he received a small piece of land to the south-west of Sans-Souci as a gift from his father, and the next year he began to build the house he called Charlottenhof, in the style that was then considered to be classical Italian. Schinkel infused a strong flavour of his own masterful personality into this type of building when he was working as architect in Berlin, and by his treatment had given it much character and individuality. He had a great plan for

Arts and Architecture
From the heights of city slickness to the depths of the woods.
Germany's landscape is straight from the Brothers Grimm: castles in the air, deep dark forests, fabled rivers. Its capital Berlin has history that encroaches achingly on the present and a culture so now it's almost tomorrow, and its other major cities are havens of fine art and fine living.

News Bulletin Current Affairs World War II ... Mobile Germany's World Cultural Heritage Sites The Sanssouci castle is one of the highlights in Potsdam During travels through Germany, many tourists focus on the cultural aspects of the country. The 30 UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites in Germany are an exhilarating way to see both natural and cultural "wonders."
The admittance to the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites is by no means easy. Once a spot makes it onto the list, it is no guarantee that it will stay there. Cologne's mammoth, gothic-style cathedral, for example, finds its status endangered because of construction around the 157-meter high structure that could obstruct a visitor's view. Nevertheless, it probably ranks as one of the most popular attractions on the German heritage site list. Cologne is also near to numerous other world heritage sites in the west of Germany, such as the cathedral in Aachen, where Charlemagne reigned over 1,200 years ago. Another sacral site is the cathedral in Speyer, a classical example of Romanesque architecture.

4.2 Architecture [Main menu] [Previous paragraph] [Next paragraph] The Viking Age ...
Photos
Danish building in the early Middle Ages was based on wood, a perishable material which has left little evidence of the buildings of the period.

The Viking Age [top]
The Vikings built military encampments which are known through excavations at Trelleborg, Aggersborg and Fyrkat, all dating back to about 1000 AD; they were built within circular earthen ramparts. The complexes were built with great precision on the basis of a cross-shaped, symmetrical network of streets, the main axes of which cut through and divided up the entire complex into smaller units. The large houses with curved walls, 32.5 m long in Aggersborg, were built within these areas in regular squares of four that enclosed an inner square courtyard. Aggersborg, which measured c. 240 m in diameter comprised 12 such groups, 48 houses in all, while the smaller Trelleborg with a diameter of 134 m contained four squares.

The Middle Ages [top]
Romanesque Architecture
The cathedral in the Swedish (at that time Danish) city of Lund was started soon after the establishment of the archbishopric in 1103; it was the first of the three great Romanesque cathedrals, all in the shape of a three-aisled basilica with transepts. The cathedral in Lund seems - like the radically restored cathedral in Viborg - especially to have been related to earlier German buildings, though there are also traces of Anglo-Norman and Lombard influences. Ribe, which followed with its great cathedral in the middle of the century, had close contacts via trade and shipping with the Rhine area of Germany, and both the materials and the models were taken from there.
