Certainly no other can boast such richness and variety of art and architecture along its shores. Most of the music in this festival is German, and much of it was composed in the Rhineland. Beethoven, who was born in Bonn, is represented in several of the concerts. And many of the musicians live or were born in the Rhineland. A Europe Less Traveled
by Chris Boston
As a child growing up in a small town in the pre-Internet (and pre-cable television!) days, I would spend those boring rainy days in my room reading through a twenty-year collection of National Geographics. The places and people portrayed in between the covers of the Geographic were exciting and like many young person before and after, I dreamt of the day I could leave home to visit them for myself. My chance to visit came via a career in the United States Army. In 1980, I started the first of two overseas tours that would allow me to live and work in Europe for twelve years. Like myriad GI’s since the 1940’s, I started my European adventure traveling by train or tour bus to many of the usual haunts for tourists in Europe. They are great places and are definitely worth a visit if you make it to Europe. However, the major tourist centers often have an overt tourist atmosphere that glosses over a little of the local flavor that you are looking for in a visit to a foreign country. They aren’t Disneyland by any means, but neither are they the unvarnished Europe that is sought by some. My opportunity to visit the less traveled Europe came when I got my first car. I bought the first of a series of

H@R! : Heritage at Risk
GERMANY
The protection and conservation of monuments in the 16 German (States) are laid down in separate laws. Each State has its own State Conservation Office which looks after historic buildings and archaeological sites. Generally speaking, the conservation of cultural heritage is a political matter which is taken very seriously. After decades of neglect in the old parts of the East German towns the German reunification confronted the new States with the task of having to keep up and repair an enormous number of historic monuments. In the meantime not only many public buildings but also a considerable amount of private historic houses, ranging from medieval half-timbered houses to 19 th century districts, have been saved from dilapidation - the latter group profiting from (a city building fund) as well as from tax exemptions for owners of cultural heritage places. However, many buildings are still at risk and need to be restored. An example of the particular problems that East Germany is facing is Quedlinburg, a town founded in the early Middle Ages, which is now on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Before Reunification the majority of the large number of half-timbered houses were to be demolished and consequently were no longer maintained. In the meantime considerable effort has been made to restore these houses with funds from the city building fund, however a great number are still empty. This is often the case where the right of possession is in doubt. Therefore, it is necessary to continue the effort to protect the historic fabric of the buildings.

It has restored oak parquet floors from the Baroque period and a carefully restored stucco ceiling in the stunning drawing room. The castle itself is the home of Count and Countess Solms, who spend their time at Wurschen with their family when they are in Germany. It is said that Napoleon stayed at Wurschen on his way to Russia in 1806. Czar Alexander of Russia and the king of Prussia met at Wurschen in 1813.
The present castle dates from 1720 but its origins go back to a fortified place in ancient times. The moated house is surrounded by nature woodlands and beautiful lakes. The region is completely unspoiled and ideally located for quiet holidays, yet there is an abundance of things for visitors to do.
The natural environment is rich in contrast, there is art, culture, and entertainment. The small old towns brim with living traditions and customs and 1000-year-old towns such as Bautzen have architecture from various epochs.

The Middle Ages, the time of knights, was the golden age of castle construction . Thousands of these fortified structures emerged in all parts of the country in the typical defense style of architecture with outer walls and turrets which nowadays appear so romantic to us. In mountainous regions these are mostly vertical castle structures which command a view of the landscape from the mountain top. On the plains there are castles surrounded by water which can appear in the form of lakes, ponds, rivers or moats. Conquering a castle was a difficult and time-consuming business. Normally it would first of all have to be besieged, in order to force out the castle folk through starvation. If the latter had stockpiled provisions in good time, the waiting time for the attacker could turn out to be very long indeed. They were then often only left with the choice of withdrawal or direct attack . Assailants applied numerous tactics and backup systems to overcome the fortifications. They tunneled under the outer walls, propped up the passageways with wooden stakes, then finally set fire to them. The stakes would break and the walls would collapse. A castle moat filled with water was a good means of preventing tunneling. Where castle moats had dried out, however, assailants sometimes built dams across, along which they could then push their

German Architecture
Germany is famous for its many castles, splendid cathedrals and stately city halls . Over the centuries a multitude of regional varieties and styles - gothic, renaissance, baroque and classic - have contributed to Germany's unique appearance.
But not only Neuschwanstein castle and Colognes twin-spired cathedral are worth a visit. At its best modern German architecture is spectacular. The 20th century has seen German architecture go around the world. The clear lines of 'Neue Sachlichkeit' and Bauhaus excerted a strong influence on architecture in the States and moulded a new international style.
The invention of reinforced concrete offered a world of possibilities to adventurous architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe und Walter Gropius
