Exploring Heidelberg, Germany
Cobblestone streets flanked with intricate Baroque architecture; market squares edged with outdoor cafes; and picturesque castle ruins overlooking everything. Heidelberg has it all. ( Questions about Heidelberg? by Bob Neubauer I t was just before 11:00 a.m. when the faint sound of bells first drifted to my ears. Forgetting the picture I'd been about to snap, I hurried to the stone wall at the edge of the castle garden and gazed down at the town below. A half dozen church steeples towered above the sea of orange-brown rooftops, and from their belfries rose a symphony of bells. Each one added its own sound to the mixnot simply chiming the hour but clanging loudly and furiously, as if a fanatical altar boy was at the end of each rope.

Castle of the Week 100 - Marksburg Castle, Koblenz, Germany
High above the town of Braubach, on a hill overlooking the Rhine, Marksburg Castle has survived time to be one of the best examples of mediaeval architecture in Germany. It holds the distinction of being the only hill castle on the Rhine that has never been destroyed. Over time it was added to, so what we see today is a compilation of centuries of building. Marksburg has a tall and slender keep. The castle was first mentioned in 1231, although 12th century records mention the Noble Freemen of Burbach, and they may have constructed the lower half of the keep. The keep rises from a small courtyard (one of the smallest in Germany) to a height of 40m. Parts of the keep date to the beginnings of the castle. It has an entrance that is 10m above ground, which made it hard for attackers to reach. The original castle was gradually added to and it expanded with the need for defenses.

Statue of Duke Ludwig the Kelheimeron on the grounds of Trausnitz Castle. Ludwig established the town of Landshut in 1204 from an established settlement along the Isar River. Here, he constructed a stronghold on a hill over the settlement and named it "Hut des Landes", meaning Safegaurd of the Countryside. This name was given to the castle and the growing town below. It was not until much later that Landshut Castle was renamed to Trausnitz Castle. Landshut was the seat of power for the Wittelsbach monarchy until almost the 17th Century. Landshut was once the capital of Bavaria until the Wittelsbachs rule. The tall tower in this photo is known as the Wittelsbach Tower and is the oldest part of Trausnitz Castle, dating back to 1204. Architecture of Nuremberg Archiseek Germany Bavaria Nuremberg / Introduction Nuremberg ("nourenberg" - rocky hill) officially commences in 1050, with the release of the bondswoman Sigena from serfdom, an imperial document issued by emperor Henry III. South of the castle an irregular settlement grew up. As a center of long distance trade and crafts Nuremberg flourished, charity foundations were established and the wealth provided a fantastic climate for the arts. Emperor Charles IV, who spent several months at a time in Nuremberg, decreed in the so-called "Golden Bull" in 1356 that each newly elected German emperor should hold his first Imperial Diet in Nuremberg. In 1424 Nuremberg was designated as the location for the safe-keeping of the Imperial jewels. The Free Imperial City was at it's zenith. This European metropolis developed to a center of German humanistic (Celtis, Pirckheimer, Schedel) sciences, arts and sculpture. Martin Behaim designd the first globe, Peter Henlein invented the first pocket watch, the publisher and printer Koberger employed up to 100 people at a time, and with Hans Sachs and Hans Rosenplüt, the poetry of the Meistersingers reached it's peak. Works of art of highest European level were created by the wood carver Veit Stoß, the sculptor Adam Kraft, the Vischer's, a brass founder family and the painter Albrecht Dürer. The city, with 40,000 citizens at that time, fell into decline after the thirty year war and with the discovery of new trade routes by sea way . This lasted until the industrial age when the first German train drove from Nuremberg to Fuerth. In 1945 the "Deutschen Reiches Schaftzkästlein" (the Treasure Chest of the German Empire) was reduced to rubble. The rebuilding program was massive and lasted a long time.

Dresdner Schloss (Dresden Castle) User Rating: 6 Description: This expansive castle in the heart of the old city served as the royal residence for Saxon leaders from the 1200s through the fall of the empire after World War I. As a home to royalty, this building underwent many changes over the years, and those changes are reflected in the combination of architectural styles. Its characteristic Baroque copper cupola was restored in 1991. While the lower sections of the castle date back to the 14th century, the inner court, with sgraffito painting inspired by Italian models, is a reflection of its condition in the 16th century. The extensive restoration is slated for completion by 2006, the city's 800th anniversary. Further Information:

From the August 2001 issue of World Press Review (VOL. 48, No. 8)
A House for Every Season
Andrea Freund, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (conservative), Frankfurt, Germany, May 17, 2001
On a plot of land on the edge of the historic town center with its robust brick buildings, within only two days, a light, airy house was screwed and welded together from just four sections. Besides boasting the benefits of modular and energy-saving homes, this one can turn to face the sun.
At first, the construction site looked something like a playground. A kindergarten class even took advantage of the spring morning for an outing to watch in awe as the crane lifted the first half of the ground floor, heaved it over a hedge, and with a swing, slowly placed it onto the steel circle, half of which then disappeared. The motor that drives the revolving device is situated beneath the house, making it resemble a model rather than a modular home. While the builders were still busy working on the steel girders for the terrace, which of course will revolve with the house, someone started up the motor, and the building began to turn even before the roof was in place.

The Plassenburg followed 100 years later. Berthold II of Dießen - Andechs signed a document as "comes de Plassenberch" for Bishop Otto of Bamberg. Otto VIII, the last in the lineage of the Andechs - Meranier to be raised to the rank of Prince of the Empire, died in 1248. After a long dispute with the Bishop of Bamberg about the succession, the rule of the Plassenburg passed to the Thuringian Count Hermann of Orlamünde, who was married to Beatrix, a sister of the last in the line of the Meranier family.
When the last member of the Orlamünde lineage died childless in the year 1340, the Hohenzollern family became heir. The first member of their family to own the Plassenburg was Johann II, Burgrave of Nuremberg. In 1385, Friedrich V, the "acquirer", divided his Franconian properties into the "Oberland", the territory above the Franconian Jura with Kulmbach as the main town and place of residence, and the "Unterland", with the seat of government in Onoldsbach, the present - day Ansbach.
His sons were the last Burgraves of Nuremberg. Since 1440, the Hohenzollern residing in Franconia had also borne the title of Margrave of Brandenburg. In 1427 already, they sold their burgrave castle to the free town of Nuremberg after constant altercations with the "obstinate nation of shopkeepers". While Friedrich VI - since the enfeolment with the Electorate of Brandenburg Elector Friedrich I - was defending his Castle Zwernitz, the Hussites laid waste to the Main suburb and to the Augustinian monastery in Kulmbach. The Plassenburg, however, stood firm under the command of Commander Hartung of Egloffstein.
