King Ludwig II said. "I intend to rebuild the old castle ruins of Hohenschwangau by the Pollat Gorge in the genuine style of the old German Knightly fortresses........the spot is one of the most beautiful that one could ever find. " Neuschwanstein Castle, royal palace in the Bavarian Alps of Germany, the most famous of three royal palaces built for Louis II of Bavaria, sometimes referred to as Mad King Ludwig, who grew up nearby at Hohenschwangau Castle Begun in 1869 and left unfinished at Louis's death in 1886, the castle is the embodiment of 19th century romanticism. In a fantastical imitation of a medieval castle, Neuschwanstein is set with towers and spires and is spectacularly sited on a high point over the Pöllat River gorge. The construction of the castle was carried out according to a well thought-out plan. The castle was equipped with all kinds of technical conveniences which were very modern, if not to say revolutionary at that time. Running water on all floors. The spring which supplied the castle with excellent drinking water was located 200 meters above the castle. There were toilets equipped with automatic flushing on every floor. A warm air heating system for the entire building. A hot water system for the kitchen and the bath.

Gelsenkirchen
Soccer reigns supreme in Gelsenkirchen. There are very few cities that are so closely identified with their football club as is the case here with FC Schalke 04. Due to its long tradition and considerable successes Schalke is well known internationally and the city's biggest source of prestige. Since August 2001 the team has had a home stadium befitting its merits, the 'AufSchalke Arena'.
Pre-industrial remnants
Gelsenkirchen was first mentioned in a historical document in the year 1150. A number of architectural monuments still bear witness to the early history of the city. The oldest of these, L¼ttinghoff Castle, is situated in a nature preserve with a stand of three-hundred-year-old oak trees. L¼ttinghoff was first mentioned in a document from the year 1308. A main castle, a front castle, and a large park area form an architectural ensemble surrounded by moats.
The main castle was preserved in its role as a defensive structure. The front castle, on the other hand, was replaced by a complex of buildings arranged in a manner typical of the 18th century. In 1994 the castle won a prize for outstanding architecture in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Architecture
When considering a building's design, particularly for structures built before the 20th century, keep in mind that very few buildings were actually built in one style. A large, expensive structure such as a church, usually the most significant building in any town often took centuries to complete, during which time tastes would change and plans would be altered. While each architectural era has its own distinctive features, some elements, general floor plans, and terms are common to many, or may appear near the end of one era and continue through several later ones. From the Romanesque period on, most churches consist either of a single wide aisle , or a wide central nave flanked by two narrow aisles. The aisles are separated from the nave by a row of columns , or square stacks of masonry called piers , usually connected by arches This main nave/aisle assemblage is usually crossed by a perpendicular corridor called a transept near the far, east end of the church so that the floor plan looks like a
