Although the Castle is now the home of Kimbolton School, there are still outstanding Pellegrini murals and a fine collection of portraits. The Castle is set in extensive wooded grounds, near the interesting little town of Kimbolton.

Architecture Shrines Simplicity was the essence of the earlier Shinto shrines in Japan. The natives believe that the Japanese kami (gods) inhabit all natural phenomena such as volcanoes and rocks; these sacred places were thus marked with only a shimenawa (special plaited rope) and gohei (strips of white paper). The shimenawa will lead one to fences and on to the torii gates, which are now common features of a shrine. The architecture of these shrines comes in many varieties, but most were developed from storehouses and dwellings of prehistoric Japan. A pair of komainu (stone 'lion') guards the main path leading to the shrine. One will have its mouth open in a roar while the other has its mouth closed. At the entrance, visitors will find the chozuya (ablution basin). The hishaku (ladle) is used to rinse both hands while the mouth is rinsed with a cupped hand. The resident kami is enshrined in the main building, honden. This place is off-limits to all but Shinto priests on certain occasions. In front of the honden is the haiden or hall of worship. An offering box (saiden-bako) sits in front of it while a gong and a long piece of rope hang above. There is a ceremonial procedure to this offering box; throw a coin into the box, sound the gong twice, make two deep bows, clap loudly twice (once deeply, once lightly), and step back to the side.

For this reason, the architectural style and design of these castles are very and to carry out general academic investigations of the entire castle.
    http://www.nara.accu.or.jp/english/information/japan/himeji.html
@Because the area in which Himeji-jo is located (which is now Himeji City) has been important as a major hub of transportation routes in West Japan since ancient times, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who later unified Japan, chose this area for the construction of his castle in the late sixteenth century. Later, Ikeda Terumasa, who became lord of the castle in 1600 as a feudal load (daimyo) of the Tokugawa shogunate, destroyed the existing castle and constructed a new one. Most of the buildings remaining today at Himeji-jo, as well as the overall composition of the castle grounds divided into the inner walled zone (containing the Hon-maru, Ni-no-maru, Nishi-no-maru and San-no-maru compounds) and the outer walled zone surrounded by a double moat (inner and outer moats) date back to the time of Ikeda Terumasa.
Justification for inclusion in the World Heritage List
  • Reasons for which the property is considered to meet one or more of the World Heritage criteria with, as appropriate, a comparative evaluation of the property in relation to properties of a similar type
    (1) The beginning of the seventeenth century, when Himeji-jo was built, was the peak of castle construction in Japan. Examples of all of the essential components of Japanese castle architecture exist at Himeji-jo and all are well conserved; the major elements include the many types of fortified buildings, walls and gates as well as stone ramparts and moats. This castle may be called the best example of this type of structure, unique to Japan, which shows highly developed defensive planning principles and ingenious devices for protection.

    Palace Square
Designed as the successor to Moscow's great imperial squares, this vast formal court is best known as the focal point of the great political struggles that transformed Russia during the first decades of the twentieth century. In the wake of Bloody Sunday the country's politics became increasingly divisive, and genuine compromise and reform unlikely. Civil unrest broke out all over the country, and, with the disaster of the Russo-Japanese War, the government was forced to accede to popular demands for reform. It soon became clear, however, that Nicholas and his government had no intention of making good on this agreement. Popular discontent and radical political movements were harshly repressed. While these policies were successful for a time, the government's inept conduct during the First World War created an enormous surge of dissent. The critical turning point came in February of 1917, when the underfed, poorly led, and discontented army refused to act to put down strikes in Moscow and St. Petersburg and called for an end to the war. By March, Nicholas had no choice but to abdicate. A provisional government assumed control under the leadership of the moderates, first Prince Lvov, then (in July) Aleksandr Kerensky. From its seat in the Winter Palace, the Kerensky government tried and failed to gain popular support and restore civil order. Among the socialist anti-government parties, the radical Bolshevik wing gradually gained strength among the increasingly impatient army and workers. Within a few months the Bolsheviks decided to assume power. On the night of October 26 they staged an armed coup d'etat, storming across the Palace Square and seizing the Provisional Government as it met within the Winter Palace. Although the storming of the Winter Palace was by no means the massive popular uprising that it was to become in the Bolshevik commemorations and in Sergei Eisenstein's film October, it was certainly the moment of symbolic birth of the Soviet state.

Created with the financial support of the Czech Minister of Culture and the firm Ipix The main cellar area, originally unified, is 48 m long and 8.5 meters high, while the wagon vault of the cellar is 4.6 m high at its peak. The room has retained its Renaissance appearance up to the present. In the 16th century the cellars served as stables, and according to archival information up to one hundred horses could have been kept here. The window segments are five-sided, confirming the Renaissance origin of these rooms which were built around 1580. The western part of the cellars were modified by a younger Baroque wall which now divides the area. There is access to other cellar spaces from the eastern side which, as archival sources indicate, were used as a prison in the 19th century. The present-day entrance to the cellars is original, and was separated from the I. courtyard by a moat in the 16th century. This moat was localised during archaeological excavations in 1997 in the area of today's

Let us trace the history of Belarusian Castles and Fortification Science through the ages. We will give few examples along the way. You are also invited to click on the links on the left and browse through our pages on particular castles. VIII-XI Centuries - early Belarusian towns and settlements
Churches and castles were among the first buildings that our ancestors - Slavic and Baltic tribes that merged later into Belarusian nation - have started to build near their primitive houses. These were the first signs of town formation. The first towns that appeared in Belarus were: Polacak (862 A.D.) and Navahrudak (~970 A.D.) in the North and Turaw (890 A.D.) - in the South. Archeological researchers can recreate approximately the structure of the first fortresses. Wooden Log Fortresses
The advantage of wooden log fortresses were that such fortresses could have been built in very short periads of time to provide basic protection against the advancing enemy. Thge disadvantage is obvious - all of them were eventually burned to dust.
