At the end of the 9th century a castle site originated which was to become the center of the power and ideology of the country in the following centuries. Throughout the whole Middle Ages the seat of the monarchal power, the spiritual center of the country and the scene of the negotiations of the estates fathers were the symbol and expression of the unity of the Czech state. Prague castle was enlarged and renewed on a grand scale by the Premyslids in the 13th century and in the following two centuries by Charles IV and King Vladislav Jagiello. In the late 16th century the Emperor Rudolph II also realized his aims here. Prague Castle underwent its last wide-scale architectural transformation in the 18th century. The biggest residential area in the country can boast with numerous works of architecture and art. In spite of all the political turns, accompanied in the past also by military events, having. moreover, preserved its polish and glitter continuously throughout a whole millennium up to the present.

The inner bailey occupied the site of the present top lawn. On its north side was the great tower, which can be seen standing out against the sky in the background of the picture. This was erected by Edward IV and added to by Richard III. Its lower stages and spiral staircase still exist in neighbouring grounds. All the other parts of the castle were built before the time of Henry IV. From the quadrangle an incline led up to the highest part of the rock. This is now occupied by the Art Museum, but then by the oldest part of the castle, the fortress built by William I in io68. The entrance to this fortress had no portcullis. The space within was called the inner ward. From it a subterranean passage now known as Mortimer’s Hole led down to the foot of the rock. On the north side was the keep, a very characteristic feature of Norman fortresses. It was usually a strong rectangular building which served as the last resort when all the other parts were carried by the enemy, and it almost invariably had a well. Newark Castle.

The architecture of castles and palaces in Belarus List of fonds
The fortified architecture of Belarus is divided into stone and wooden architecture, according to the type of materials used in their construction. Stone and wood often supplemented each other within one structure. The wooden fortifications have not survived. We can glean some idea about these structures from property inventories and a small number of old pictures.
The Castle at Novogrudok, Grodno Region is the one of the oldest in Belarus. As early as the 11th to the mid-13th centuries, the wooden walls of the castle were repeatedly stormed by enemy troops and were frequently restored. The later stone walls of the polygonal form had several towers. In the 16th century, the castle had seven towers and was one of the strongest of its time. The castle was badly damaged during the war of Russia with Rzeczpospolita (the Polish Kingdom) in 1654-1667. At the time of the Northern war in 1706, it was burned down by the Swedes.
The outstanding work of Belarusian architecture is the Castle at Mir, Grodno Region. The castle is situated in

Program Overview
This is the second year of the University of Toronto’s Summer Program in Central Europe. The program is designed to introduce students to this unique region through academic instruction and immersion in the local culture. It includes three three-day field trips to the imperial cities of Vienna, Budapest and Prague. The first year of the program, 2004, was a great success, and coincided with the accession of the Czech Republic and Hungary to the European Union, providing students with a first-hand perspective on this historic event.
The program is hosted by Masaryk University, an institution established in 1919, only three months after the Czechoslovak Republic itself, and named for the country’s founder and first President.
IMPORTANT: Spaces in the course and the group flight are limited. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. Every effort will be made to satisfy your requests, but you should apply early to avoid disappointment.
Central Europe: Host Cities
Brno
, the home base for the program, is a picturesque city situated in the Czech Republic in the very heart of Europe. To the south lay the fields and vineyards of the Southern Moravian lowlands, to the north the wooded foothills of the Bohemian-Moravian range. Brno offers outstanding opportunities for hiking, bicycling and many other forms of recreation, and will be used as a springboard to Vienna, Budapest and Prague.

Due to its style, the date is assumed to be in the late 10th, early 11th centuries. For more evidence and discussion, the reader is encouraged to link to further pages. The article continues to talk of the three purposes of the Church, being school, worship, and housing. A map of England is shown and the location of the Church is highlighted. Talk of the

    King John
    Sovereign of England
    From 1199 to 1216
John was the youngest son of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitane. The conflict and betrayal which marked this family would be reflected on into John's own reign.
When John was only eighteen, Henry II sent him to Ireland to represent the crown and learn the duties of rulership. John proved ill suited for the task and not only worsened the relationship with the Irish but created troubles with English landholders as well.
Within less than a year John returned to England, his efforts in Ireland a disaster.
