LILLIAN'S ELECTRONIC TOUR OF THE CASTLE
(The original page as it first appeared on the internet in 1994)
    A NEWBIE IN TOWN
On Friday, March 13, 1992, I moved to Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, just seventy-eight years and a day after the death of inventor George Westinghouse , founder of the Westinghouses Air Brake Company. Adjusting to the sounds of passing trains, the hum of the rails, and the toll of the bell from the Town Clock took me quite a while. The clock is part of the Castle, an affectionate name given the old executive headquarters of the Air Brake, known by my mother-in-law and other long time town folk simply as the G.O. Set to chime the correct number of times every hour on the hour, the Town Clock also strikes once every half hour. Midnight is no different from high noon to that persistent clock. You can well imagine my dislike for it during my first few weeks of adjustment to city living. Nonetheless, the first one in line to tour the Castle during Wilmerding Days, a time when everyone gets together to celebrate the town, was yours truly.
    ONCE INSIDE THE CASTLE
Patterned after a castle in Scotland, it proved to be a magnificent piece of architecture. A rare treat indeed. Mr. Westinghouse, himself, was present in life size cardboard cutout form, standing there in his old office. Old Wilmerding. What an impressive sight she was from the window of his second floor semi-oval office. Everything was visible including trains, rails and the Air Brake manufacturing plant which once employed well over 6,000 people. I was overwhelmed.

    Architecture
The architecture of the cities of Lithuania is like a mirror which contains a reflection of our history. The brick and walled castles of the Middle Ages comprise the oldest surviving monuments of Lithuanian architecture, attesting to the austere periods of the founding of the state. From the 14th century onwards, architecture began to be shaped by European traditions. All the styles of Europe, one after the other, reached the country, sometimes belatedly. In the 14th century, there was the early Gothic style, exemplified by the castle of the rulers in Trakai. In the 15th century, the late Gothic style marked the Church of St. Anne in Vilnius. (This was the church Napoleon admired so much that he wanted to see it relocated in Paris). During the Renaissance Period of the 16th century, cities began to be constructed according to a formal plan and structure. The Rulers' Palace of the Lower Castle in Vilnius (presently under reconstruction) dates from this period. The Baroque style took hold in Lithuania in the 17th century, and produced a vast number of masterpieces. The Baroko Kelias (Baroque Way), established throughout Lithuania in 1996 under the auspices of the Council of Europe, touched only a part of the treasure trove. Vilnius is sometimes alluded to as the Baroque capital of the entire region.

T he Choson Dynasty was founded by an ambitious general, Yi-Songge, in 1392, and ontinued until 1910, The history of Choson architecture would be described in three periods of the early, the middle, and the late period, in accordance with the cultrural and architectural development. I n the early period, The architecture developed as a succession from the cultural inheritance of the previous dynasty with the new political guiding principles of Confucianism, that took the place of Buddhism. Through the influence of Confucianism, a refined aristocratic taste of the previous era was replaced by the characteristics of unsophisticated, simple and humble beauty with the qualities of commonness and steadiness. The intercolumnar bracket set system was used in building the most important edifice on the premises. The columnar bracket set system and the eclectic bracket system, which consists of architectural elements from both columnar and intercolumnar systems, were also used for temples and other important buildings. F rom the beginning of the middle period, national resources were exhausted due to the Japanese invasions which started from l592 and continued for seven years. The recovery from the destruction caused by this invasion was very slow. Divison and rivalry among Confucian scholars who controlled the country politically and socially produced more severe party strife. Because of the anti-Manch attitude of the Korean scholars, the cultural influence of Ch'ing was exerted so little upon the Korean culture that native element and expression in architecture were developed more extensively. The intercolumnar bracket set system was generally used for all the important buildings in this period.

Access by bus ("175" or "188") or by taxi (name: "919"). CITY OF WARSAW Warsaw is one of the youngest capitals in Europe. It became the Polish capital after Cracow in 16th century. Early settlements however already existed in the 10th century. In 1655 Warsaw's development as the country's capital was halted upon the Swedish invasion known as the "deluge". Warsaw experienced its "golden age" in the 18th century under the last Poland's king Stanislaw August Poniatowski. During that time it was transformed into a modern city. During Poland's partitions by 3 countries, from late 18th century until the World War I Warsaw never gained independence. After World War I Warsaw was re-established as the capital of Poland. Until the World War II Varsovians worked hard to build new infrastructure and expand the city, and by 1939 the population of Warsaw had risen to over 1.3 million.

    Capitol Castle
Old State Capitol's unique architecture has undergone changes By CAROL ANNE BLITZER Advocate staff writer Advocate staff photos by John H. Williams
The Old State Capitol served as Louisiana's state house from 1850 until 1861. After a restoration, it again served as the Capitol from 1882 until the new Capitol was dedicated in 1932. Gov. Huey Long had little use for old buildings, especially the Old State Capitol. It had bad memories of impeachment proceedings brought against him there in 1929. He wanted to tear down the old Gothic castle and build a modern skyscraper capitol, something he thought a progressive state like Louisiana deserved. Long got his new capitol, but thanks to two strong-willed women, Mrs. J.W. Tucker and Mrs. Irving Dameron, the Old State Capitol was saved. "Mrs. Tucker and Puffy Dameron sat on the steps of the Old State Capitol and said, 'Over our dead bodies will you tear down this building,'" said Elise Rosenthal, who fought to save the building again some 50 years later. New Orleans had originally been designated the capital city of the state, but it offered too many temptations for the legislators. The Constitution of 1845 moved the capital to a location "no closer than 60 miles" to New Orleans but left the responsibility of designating a site to the Legislature. It selected Baton Rouge.
