This shows the baroque style of the work carried our at Windsor for Charles II by architect Hugh May , painter Antonio Verrio , carver Grinling Gibbons and others. St George's Hall was redecorated in the early 19th century, but several smaller interiors from this period survive. This plan of Windsor Castle was made by Batty Langley in 1743. George IV made substantial alterations to Windsor in the early 19th century, but all the principal elements of the present castle can be seen here. It was doomed by Robert Moses' call for its demolition to build approaches for his ill-fated harbor bridge to Brooklyn today's Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. A loud civic clamor and the reported intervention of Eleanor Roosevelt miraculously saved it though it languished inside a construction fence for decades. In 1946 the ruin was named a National Historic Monument. In 1986 it became a ticket office for the boats to National Park service attractions in the harbor.

Lough Cutra Castle and Estate has a long and varied history. The countryside surrounding Lough Cutra contains much evidence of a history dating back to the Tuatha Da Danaans. Evidence of old churches, cells and monasteries are prolific in the area and a number of the islands on the lake contain the remnants of stone alters. The history of the estate can be traced back as far as 866 A.D. To learn more about the history of Lough Cutra Estate from 866 A.D. to 1797 please click here When the estate was inherited by Colonel Vereker in 1797 he decided to employ the world renowned architect John Nash to design the Gothic Style building known as Lough Cutra Castle. Nash also design Mitchelstown Castle, Regeants Park Cresent and East Cowes Castle. Great attention was paid to the planting of trees, location of the deer park, and creation of new avenues. An American garden was created to the South west of the Castle and large extensions added to the building, including a clock tower and servant quarters. The entire building operations were completed in 1858 and 1859. Home to the Viscounts Gort the entertainment at the Castle was legendary and past regular visitors included author WB Yeats and Lady Gregory from nearby Coole Park.

Architecture by Kristin A. Kuckelman Chapter Contents
The villagers of Castle Rock Pueblo constructed a substantial number of buildings. All structures observed at the site were built of sandstone masonry. Remnants of buildings were found around the base of Castle Rock butte, on top of at least one large boulder, on a ledge midway up the north face of the butte, and on top of the butte. I estimate that at least 16 kivas , 40 rooms, nine possible towers, a D-shaped enclosure, two dams and associated reservoirs, two possible plazas , and numerous enclosing and retaining walls were constructed. Archaeologists study architectural remains in order to learn what types of buildings were constructed, how the different buildings were used, and how many people lived at a site (see " Population Estimates "). In this section, I discuss the types and uses of various buildings observed at Castle Rock, including rooms, kivas, towers, public architecture, and defensive architecture. In " Settlement Organization ", I discuss how the village and the people who lived in it were organized.
Accurately estimating the number of structures originally present at Castle Rock is a difficult task, especially for the top of the butte and the southern portion of the site. Historic documents (

Castle Rock Pueblo in a Regional Context by Mark D. Varien
Castle Rock Pueblo was a small village inhabited in the late thirteenth century A.D. In this section I place Castle Rock Pueblo within the larger social landscape of the Mesa Verde region. Archaeologists use the term settlement pattern to refer to the geographical locations and distributions of archaeological sites. By recording the locations of sites relative to one another and relative to various natural features, archaeologists are able to analyze settlement patterns and document how those patterns changed through time. In this discussion of the social landscape, I begin by examining the area immediately surrounding Castle Rock Pueblo, known as the Sand Canyon locality ( Lipe 1992*3 :2). Next I examine regional settlement patterns by analyzing the distribution of community centers that date from the period between A.D. 900 and 1300.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EDINBURGH
In 1018 King Malcolm II defeated the Northumbrians and Edinburgh Castle became Scottish.
In 1128, King David I, after founding Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, moved his court and thus, the Scottish capital, from Dunfermline to Edinburgh. From around this time the town rapidly grew in size and importance. As animosity increased between the Scots and the English, Edinburgh's overall strategic importance grew and with it the castle became more and more of a recognised stronghold for the city.
In 1296 Edinburgh Castle sacked by English king, Edward I.
There is only one feasible approach to Edinburgh Castle via the eastward sloping Royal Mile and would-be assailants would have to consider this. In 1313 some resolute attackers under the orders of Robert the Bruce scaled the Castle Rock's formidable northern aspect and ramparts and retook the castle from the English. They dismantled it, except for St. MargaretsChapel

Introduction Course/Grade Level: Japan is most often studied in American high schools within the context of a World History/Cultures course, either one or two years long. Unfortunately, within this curriculum, the coverage of Japan, and other non-Western civilizations, is still rather limited in the general survey textbook. The typical world history course and textbook are still conservatively framed and are little more than the history of Western civilization. For the teacher who wishes to expand on coverage of Japan, the question is, "when and how?" Although the teacher confronts working with limited time and resources, selecting a topic to expand the study of Japan is the most difficult choice. Once this hurdle has been overcome, devising a method is not that difficult. The teacher simply uses the typical world history textbook in combination with the new computer technology of the Internet. For these reasons, this unit has been devised as an example of how to utilize the Internet in classroom instruction to expand the study of Japan. This unit is appropriate for a history or geography class at the middle or high school level.

Pathfinder
Architecture Through the Ages: Architecture Sites for Kids and Their Families
Introduction
This pathfinder is aimed at students of eight to sixteen years old who can read with comprehension and search for architecture related information online for personal interests or school projects. The other aim is to help their family members who want find similar information either for helping with school assignments and personal interests or guidance in broadening the students' knowledge. The pathfinder will help answer questions like: where can I find some information about architecture works of the U.S. or the world? What is the tallest building in the world today? What is Japanese architecture style? Because sites connected with architecture vary in quality, suitability, reliability and coverage, I followed 3 stages in my search for information: firstly, I went to the Architecture and Planning Library at the University of Texas at Austin, borrowed architecture books and scanned them to review the famous and representative buildings, structures and architects of the world. Secondly, I set up evaluation criteria for my selection process:

GENERAL HISTORY OF CASTLE BUILDING IN GREAT BRITAIN.
THE middle of the last century it was commonly supposed that the Roman invaders not only made fine roads, and erected splendid buildings, but that they taught the conquered race to do the same. It now seems certain that, with the exception of churches, few, if any, permanent buildings were erected in Britain for five hundred years after their departure. About two hundred and fifty churches in Britain shew remains of Saxon work, but there is no evidence that permanent materials were used for military buildings until about 1066, and there is plenty of evidence that, even for many years after this, the usual material was earth, with fences and houses of wood or wattle and daub.* The Norman barons, who came to England with the Conqueror, left great castles at home, but they were not of stone. They consisted, like the English castles of the period, of mounds and ditches. The hall, built , f trunks of trees, like a settler's hut, was situate on the summit of the mound, and approached by a trestle bridge crossing the ditch from the counter scarp. The quarters of the principal retainers were at the foot, or on the sides of the mound, while the garrison, servants and cattle occupied the Bailey, a separate court, enclosed within the same main ditch as the motto or mound, but divided from it by a cross ditch. learner, in his A.B.C. of Gothic Architecture, tells us that " the bestinformed antiquaries at the time of the revival of the study of Architectural History, between 1830 and 1840, made a series of excursions to the sites of all the castles of the barons who came over to England with William the Conqueror in search of some masonry of the first half of the eleventh century. To their surprise, they found no masonry at all in any one of them; there were magnificent earthworks to all of them, clearly strewing that castles of that period were of earthworks and wood only. This is recorded in the Bulletin Monumental of the period, and the substance of the observations is given in the A. B. Codaire De Caumout, who was their leader."

Naxos Architecture
Naxos Architecture, Greece: Information about the architecture of Naxos, Cyclades
Because Naxos Greece was under Venetian rule for a long period and stayed under this authority even during the Turkish period (see the chapter History), the architecture of the island has been strongly influenced by the Venetians and many beautiful buildings and monuments of this period are still standing today, testifying about the past of the island and giving to it a unique and interesting character. During Venetian times, a School of Trade and Administration Services were standing inside the castle, at the same site where the Covent of Capuchin and the Covent of Ursulines stands today.
The mansions, houses of the nobility, are also very interesting to see and good examples of the architectural style of this epoch.
Beautiful, simple and functional, those house had only one room, used as cleverly as possible, to fulfil the family’s needs.
