Castles: The Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts of Flanders), Ghent
9th-14th centuries, largely 1180-1200. Restored. The Castle of the Counts in Ghent is one of the most impressive remaining examples of defensive architecture. Built to defend against Viking attacks in the ninth century, it was significantly expanded c. 1180-1200, with additions in the fourteenth century. A massive wall and gate encircle the castle keep. The enclosed area of the castle fortifications is one acre, contained within an oval wall of about 200 by 150 feet. It contains residences for the count, his servants and guards, as well as dungeons. The central three story "donjon" is the oldest of its kind in western Europe.66 The rooms measure 33' by 90', and it has 7' thick walls. Improvements in catapults in about 1200 necessitated higher walls for the exterior defensive ring. The castle was restored 1894-1914.

Though the first mention of Bouillon is in a text dating from 988, there can be no doubt that it existed for centuries before then. Experts agree that the name goes back to the Gallo-Roman period. In the absence of conclusive documentation it is not possible to put forward any precise date for the foundation of the castle. Historically the castle commands the north-south passage between the Upper and Lower Lotharingia, those famous -avenues des Frangais,, (Avenues of the French), the natural route of all south-bound invasions until 1940.
The history of the castle closely parallels that of the town and the Duchy, it comprises three distinct periods:
1) The Dukes of the House of Ardenne (Godfrey was the fifth and last on the line) owned the castle until 1096, when Godfrey of Bouillon sold all of his Duchy to Otbert, prince-bishop of Liege (with the possibility of buying it back after three years). Otbert plundered the churches and monasteries of his own diocese to obtain the money to enable him to meet the outlay of the first crusade. The Duke conquered Jerusalem and died there in 1 1 00 with the title of "Defender of the Holy Sepulchre" after having refused to wear the gold crown of a king "where Jesus Christ had worn a crown of thorns".

As we stepped into the streets we were determined to envelop ourselves into as much true Belgium as we could possibly get in four days...to hear the Belgian past echoing through the cobblestone streets, while savoring the country's energy in the present.
One of the fascinating aspects of historical architecture is how much attention to detail the craftspeople, architects and builders of the time paid to their craft. Walking around this Leuven City Hall, we were astonished by the ornamentation around every window, every nook, every spire. And this is just one of the many painstakingly crafted artifacts of the past that adorns this world. Why is it that today our civilization does not build such wonders? Is it a matter of style? Money? Lack of patience?

Eastern students aid ancient castle dig in Belgium
Honor students take a course at the Louvain-La-Neuve
By Sabrina Madrigal/ Staff writer Published: Thursday, April 21, 2005 Media Credit: Angie Faller
For the past five years, the honors program at Eastern has allowed students to go on archeological digs at a castle in Belgium.
Bailey Young, associate professor of history, is in charge of the program.
Young, who studied Merovingian archeology in Paris, came to Eastern in 1994 and together with Raymond Brulet, of the Universite Catholique de Louvain in Belgium, designed the four-week summer archeological dig.
"This is a very unique program that allows students from America to work side-by-side with students from Belgium and other foreign countries," Young said. "It is very difficult to excavate when you're not from a school like Brown or Princeton. That is why this is such a good opportunity for the students here at Eastern."
