Schillerplatz 3, A-1010 Wien, Website: www.akademiegalerie.at , U-Bahn: Karlsplatz Originally founded in 1692 by Peter Strudl, Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts is the oldest institution of its kind in Central Europe. Having been inspired by the work of Italian artists (Strudl's country of birth), he arrived in Austria as a court painter in 1686. Less than 7 years later, Strudl was to establish a private art school at his residence (the "Strudelhof"), with the flourishing academy eventually giving rise to many famous pupils, including Egon Schiele and Ernst Fuchs. As well as training artists, the Academy has evolved to incorporate both picture and print galleries. The picture gallery is divided into rooms (salles) and includes works dating back to the fourteenth century. Probably the most well-known is the "Weltgerichtstriptychon" or "Last Judgement" by Dutch artist, Hieronymus Bosch - a painter of religious symbolism. However, the gallery is also home to important pieces by world famous artists such as Botticelli, Rubens, Rembrandt and Guardi. In addition, you'll find a room of works by former students such as Hundertwasser (who continues to have an influence on contemporary art in Vienna) while the print room contains a large collection of drawings, sketches and watercolours. | |
