Assignment: Describe an activity, interest, experience, or achievement in
your life (this could be a book, movie, or an activity or
experience at work, home, or school) that has been particularly
meaningful to you. Length: 250-500 words
Questions or Concerns: Am I focused enough on the topic? Do I elaborate enough on how
the experience changed my life? Do I completely answer the
prompt? Submitted Document: “Guten morgen!” Or, if you’re reading this in the afternoon, “Guten haben!” If you haven’t already guessed, the experience that has changed my life was a trip to Germany and Austria. This experience was momentous for me because it has shaped the direction of my life by exposing me to architecture not available in Southwest Florida, and making me choose architecture or engineering as a career.
What can I say about Europe that has not already been told (and much more eloquently) in countless poems, tales, and writings? Nothing in my mind can compare to the St. Stephans Cathedral in Vienna, Austria. A single spire from the church is 445 feet tall, a peak incomprehensible to a girl who lives in an area where the tallest buildings are a mere 15 stories high. The Gothic architecture and the minute details associated with it have made me realize the infinite possibilities architecture provides. You can have a massive building capable of surviving hundreds of years as well as World War II, and still have it equipped with such delicate details as hundreds of stained glass panels or chiseled gargoyles.

The Hapsburg dynasty was influential in Central Europe from the 10th century. As Holy Roman Emperors they controlled an Empire which at its mediaeval zenith covered huge tracts of Europe stretching from Spain and the Netherlands to the Black Sea. The great cities of the Hapsburgs were the golden trio of Vienna, Prague and Budapest, which influenced not only the body politic but also the awesome outpouring of creativity from composers such as Mozart, Hayden, Liszt and Dvorak to Smetena, Bartok and Janacek. We also view the great art works held in these cities with paintings by Da Vinci and Breugel, the Expressionists and Klimt. We do not overlook the great architectural heritage of these cities. Prague is considered the stone jewel in the Hapsburg crown with its stunning range of architecture, which is UNESCO protected. The great Neo-Gothic buildings of Budapest and Neo-Classical splendours of Vienna are also explored. We explore the artistic and musical heritage of neighbouring Poland whose Chopin would certainly rate among the musical greats. The art and architecture of Krakow is regarded as being amongst the best in Europe.

History of Prague Prague Castle Construction of Prague Castle was begun in the 9th century, and it has been home to heads of state from the middle ages until the present. Prague, aside from Rome, has been the only European capital city to remain for the past eleven hundred years the undisputed seat of power in its state. In Prague Castle's St. Vitus Cathedral lies the tomb of King Wenceslas, patron saint of the Czech lands of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The centerpiece of the Old Town, located on the eastern bank of the Vltava, is the Old Town Square and original Old Town Hall, which boasts the famous Prague astronomical clock. There's hardly a better place in Europe for a journey built around country walks, and most of our hikes begin or end at wondrous castles. Decades of post-war isolation have left the medieval towns of the Czech countryside intact and thoroughly enchanting. One example is Telc, one of the best-preserved Renaissance towns in all Europe, which we first see as we walk through its arched town gates at the endof a memorable day's hike. Along with gems such as the turreted city of Cesky Krumlov and our grand finale in enchanting Prague, this adventure features striking architecture, castle-to-castle hikes, and a chance to experience the Czech Republic's lively cultural renaissance.

th century like the famous buildings of the Ringstrasse in Vienna. Here, as in many European countries, there is often the danger of mere façadism. It has to be added that together with architectural projects in general the so-called "Ortsbildpflege" mostly lies in the hands of local authorities,- with the disastrous consequences of an ineffective or non-existent area planning policy, mainly in those areas opened up for tourism. On the other hand, the decisive socio-political as well as socio-economic changes during the 20 th century have removed the economic basis for many historic castles and palaces everywhere. Large, richly-furnished building complexes thus lost their function and their means of survival. In eastern Austria, where the Iron Curtain created additional handicaps to economic growth for decades after the Second World War II, numerous significant palaces remain empty without any appropriate use. In many cases their poor structural condition has already endangered their chances of survival. To mention just one example, Rotenturm Castle in Burgenland, an interesting late-Historicism style 19 th century complex, has been unoccupied for decades and is decaying towards its unavoidable disintegration.

    Lucas von Hildebrandt
    Master of Baroque Architecture
An Unobstrusive But Industrious Life From his correspondence, conducted largely in Italian, it may be gathered that, privately, Lucas von Hildebrandt was a passionate and uncompromising artist, a practical man rather than a theoretician, who furthermore was limited in his working capacity by epilepsy. Conflicts in artistic matters surfaced frequently, both with his clients and with collaborating artists such as painters and sculptors. Hildebrant died on 16 November, 1745, and his grave stone is to be found in the parish church of Mariabrunn. Aristocratic Families As Clients and Patrons Hildebrandt probably became acquainted with Count Ferdinand Bonaventura Harrach when the latter was Imperial High Steward at the court of Leopold I (1640-1705). His son, who became Viceroy of Naples, Count Aloys Thomas Harrach, was a great art collector and played an important role in establishing the legendary art collection of the Harrach family. He gave Hildebrandt numerous commissions. Hildebrandt also worked extensively for the Liechtenstein family: Anton Florian Liechtenstein, Ambassador to the Holy See and the tutor of the future Emperor Charles VI, commissioned him to build the portal, as well as the accompanying stairwell, for the Liechtensteins' city palace on Vienna's Minoritenplatz It was probably through the Liechtenstein family that Hildebrandt came into contact with the court and the Imperial family, although he received few commissions from this direction, since it proved impossible for him to oust his greatest rivals, the two Fischers von Erlach. Furthermore, the court was forced to economize greatly during the war of the Spanish Succession (1700-1714), so that Hildebrandt received only small-scale commissions, such as the design of the sarcophagi for the Emperors Leopold I and Josef I (1678-1711). Even in the 1720's he was still occupied with the conversion work to the buildings of the

Vienna (German: Wien) is the capital of Austria, and also one of Austria's nine federal states (Bundesland Wien). With a population of about 1.6 million, Vienna is the largest city and the cultural and political centre of Austria. Situated on both sides of the river Danube, Vienna is 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Austrian-Slovakian border, and 50 km (31.3 mi) from the Slovakian capital, Bratislava. Vienna is surrounded by the Austrian federal state of Lower Austria. It is one of the most well-known cities in Europe and has a prominent place in the history of Western civilization and world culture and history.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as other United Nations Offices and many international institutions and companies, are located in Vienna. Vienna was originally a Celtic city founded around 500 BC. In 15 BC, it became a frontier city ("Vindobona") guarding the Roman Empire against the German tribes to the north. In the Middle Ages, it became the home of the Babenberg and, later, the Habsburg dynasties and through the latter the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Ottoman Turkish invasions of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries were stopped two times in total at Vienna. See the Battle of Vienna (1683). In 1815, Vienna was the site of the Congress of Vienna which redrew national boundaries in Europe after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at Waterloo.
