Culture on the territory of what is today Austria can be traced back to around 1050 B.C. with the Hallstatt and La Tene cultures. However, a culture of Austria as we know it today began to take shape when the Austrian lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire , with the Privilegium Minus of , which elevated Austria to the status of a Duchy , marking an important step in its development. Name
The German name –sterreich can be translated into English as the "eastern realm", which is derived from the Old German Ostarr®chi . The term probably originates in a vernacular translation of the Medieval Latin name for the region: Marchia orientalis, which translates as "eastern border," as it was situated at the eastern edge of the Holy Roman Empire, that was also mirrored in the name Ostmark applied after Anschluss to the Third Reich. Interestingly, the derivation of the Latin name from the original Old German gives rise to the use of "Aust-" for east, rather than south as in Classical Latin. With the term Austria came the name for its inhabitants, Austrian(s).

cddcodebase = "";cddcodebase967155 = ""; The City of Brno Explanation of Photographs (clockwise - from top left):
You can find a lot more information about Brno at website http://www.brno.cz.
In the very heart of Europe, at the junction of the rivers Svratka and Svitava, lies the town of Brno, the political, economic and cultural centre of Southern Moravia and with its 400,000 inhabitants, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of the 11th century, a settlement arose at the crossing of trade routes connecting Berlin (Germany), Krakow (Poland), Graz (Austria), Trieste (Italy), and Vienna (Austria), on swampy ground at a ford across the Svratka River. Over the centuries, the settlement grew to a town that in the 19th century, came alive with the bustle of industry. The great processes of innovation made Brno the most advanced industrial centre in the Hapsburg monarchy of the time, the Moravian "Manchester". The first rail line in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy connected Brno with Vienna. Schools were established, and the monastery in Old Brno became a centre of scholarship under the direction of Abbot Johann Gregor Mendel, the discoverer of the laws of heredity and the founder of genetics. After the First World War, Brno became the second city of the Republic of Czechoslovakia in both size and significance. Today, it has the largest Trade Fair Centre in Central and Eastern Europe, originally established in 1922.

Architectural and Historical Development Within today s castle ruins a time a place for the captured king during his enforced journey to austria.
http://www.ckrumlov.cz/uk/region/histor/t_divkam.htm
Dívèí Kámen Castle
Location :

The ruins of the Dívèí Kámen castle are located near Tøísov village 9 km to the north-east of Èeský Krumlov. The castle was situated on a high rocky hill locked by the waters of the Vltava river and the stream called Køemežský stream. This stream empties into the Vltava river under the castle. Dívèí kámen, view from upper moulding, foto: Andreas Buchner
Created with the financial support of the Phare and the firm Ipix Dívèí kámen, lower view Origin of the Name :
The name of the castle originated from the German word Stein - stone or castle and the word Maget (Mogt) - a girl or a maiden. The castle was called either the German word Maidstein (Menštejn) or the Czech juncture of words Dívèí Kámen ("Maiden's Stone") that is used up to the present day. Architectural and Historical Development :
Within today's castle ruins a hill-side habitation was spread. This habitation was settled during several primeval periods. The centre of the habitation was destroyed when the castle was built, only some remains on the north and the north-east slopes were preserved. At the turn of the earlier and middle Bronze Ages the fortified community was established there. It was protected with mound from better accessible sides. Today the Dívèí Kámen castle with its 210 metres of length and 45 metres of width is one of the biggest castle ruins in Bohemia. Parts of the walls of the upper and lower castle and also parts of the castle fortification were preserved.

71. Little Castle Of Poøešín
Architectural and Historical Development The little castle of Poøešín is a his robber band attacked merchants´ couches on the trading path to austria.
http://www.ckrumlov.cz/uk/region/histor/t_poresi.htm
Little Castle of Poøešín
Location :

The ruin of the little castle of Poøešín is located on a narrow thickly wooded headland of the left riverbank of the Malše river about 7 km to the north of Kaplice. Origin of the Name :
The name of the castle is derived from the Christian name Poøeša so the name means as much as Poøeša's castle or Poøeša's yard (in the German language Poreschien). Architectural and Historical Development :
of the wings were left. Today the ground floor is buried under ruins but it is still recognisable, that the rooms in the upper floors, which were the main residential rooms of the castle were accessible from the courtyard by a wooden built-on gallery, that was destroyed a long time ago. These facts are proven also with the remains of a fireplace on the south-east side wall of the palace. Several smaller rooms were placed above the main rooms. History of the Place's Residents :
The castle was probably founded by Bavor III ze Strakonic on the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Already around 1315 Bavor passed on the Poøešín estates to three brothers Vernéø, Racek and Pøibík z Vitìjovic who were progenitors of the lords of Poøešín. The lords of Poøešín as well as the Bavors had an arrow in their coat-of-arms. When the lineal branch of chieftains of Poøešín died out with Markvart z Poøešína at the beginning of the 15th century, the estates were passed over their relative Hroch z Maršovic. Around 1434 his offspring sold the castle to Ulrich II. von Rosenberg

DAY 1, ISTANBUL
You’ll start your tour in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city and the former imperial capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. A fusion of East and West, narrow alleys are flanked by wooden Ottoman houses while a nearby funky restaurant and bar strip in the downtown area pumps out Turkish pop. We explore the Blue Mosque, St Sophia Museum and Underground Basilica, and the sprawling Grand Bazaar on a walking tour. In your free time maybe treat yourself to a meal at one of the countless restaurants along the narrow alleys of downtown Taksim, take a Turkish bath, board a local ferry on the Bosphorus to observe the beautifully lit sprawl of Istanbul by night and then finish your evening with the timeless wind-down of smoking a nargileh (Ottoman water pipe).

The Castle
Take a journey into the middle ages! Live the life of the 13th century: Defiant architecture, sweet songs of courtly love with the Minnesang concerts, have a feast at a knight’s banquet... we also serve pheasant and wild boar. You can create your own coin as a memento!
The Museum of Torture
Taking into account the length of European history, it is not so long ago that torture disappeared from our justice system. Since the Enlightenment, at around the second half of the 18th century, it is no longer recorded in court documents – only to “rear its ugly head” again in our century. Even if it weren’t for the shocking documentation of the realities of a barbarous Renaissance, the Torture Exhibition at Sommeregg Castle, in Seeboden on the Millstatt Lake in Carinthia, would still be an aesthetically presented platform for a trip through thousands of years of human understanding of justice and human atrocity.
The Medieval Tournaments
For three weeks maidens and warriors will give you a close-up experience of the Middle Ages near Sommeregg Castle in Seeboden. From Wednesday to Sunday there are daily tournaments, acrobatics, Minnesang, the Hand-craft Market and much more to see.
