This palace of 1,441 rooms was the summer residence of the powerful Hapsburg family that ruled much of Europe. The great baroque architect J. B. Fischer von Erlach modeled his plans on Versailles, though he ultimately surpassed the French palace in size. Even so, Maria Theresia spoke of the palace as "cozy," where she could retreat with her many children and paint watercolors or work on her embroidery. The Hapsburg dynasty came to an end here when Karl I signed his Act of Abdication on November 11, 1918. Hofburg (Vienna): The winter palace of the Hapsburgs, Hofburg was the seat of an imperial throne that once governed the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire. The sprawling palace reads like an architectural timeline of the Hapsburg family, dating from 1279 with subsequent additions continuing until 1918. Truly a city within a city, the Hofburg houses everything today from the offices of the president of Austria to the Spanish Riding School with its Lipizzaner stallions even the Vienna Boys' Choir. On a slope above Vienna, this palace was designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, the last major architect of the baroque in Austria. Belvedere served as a summer home for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the country's greatest military hero, who routed the Ottomans in the late 17th century. The palace was a gift from the imperial throne in recognition of the prince's military achievements, although he was (at the time) richer than the Hapsburgs. Not exactly pleased with his "gift," the hero made stunning new baroque additions and improvements. As a collector and patron of the arts, he filled the palace with objets d'art.

What is a Castle?
By Stephen Francis Wyley Drawings by Steven Lowe
Figure 1. Quadrangular castle. What is a Castle? Is it a masonry edifice constructed on a hilltop with tall towers punctuating the curtain walls topped by battlements? Can you imagine a column of knights in full plate armour mounted on war horses charging out of the main gate over the lowered drawbridge to do battle against an attacking enemy force, while beautifully coiffed ladies watch from a tower window, and serfs till the earth to grow harvest so that the lord of the castle can continue to spend money on courtly pursuits and new armour form Italy or Germany? This imagined spectacle represents the feudal system where the castle was a place of both residence and defence for a lord. On the other hand was a castle simply a base for military and administrative operations, such as; dispensing justice and collecting taxes and tolls; subjugating conquered lands; suppressing rebellion and unrest; acting as a base for raids or invasions; protecting trade and territory from attack or just to attack another castle. Whatever the case, the castle has become a visual symbol of the Medieval period and everyone has their own view of the subject, be it coloured by their educational background and the bounds of their imagination.

The well-preserved old centre of Austria's second city is complemented by a wide range of architectural tendencies that can range from the expressionist to the minimalist, yet maintain a strong historical relation by distinctive contrast. Graz lies on the river Mur at the point where it leaves the southern edge of the Austrian Alps to open onto a wide flood plain. The precise choice of site was presumably due to the defensive possibilities of the Schlossberg, a tail rocky outcrop rising immediately adjacent to the river, around which the city grew. Although Vienna is only 100 miles away to the north-east, the winding, tunnelling train still takes two and a half hours from city to city. In past centuries the Alpine barrier not only hugely exaggerated the distance, but also made Graz more southward-looking, more Balkan and Latin in culture and temperament. It is hardly surprising that many of its most treasured historic buildings were by Italian masters. The climates of the two cities also differ, with Graz tending to be hotter and dryer than Vienna, and getting its rain at different times.

19. Austria's Links To The Habsburg Dynasty
architecture and urban aspects of austria, more so than in any other country, Innsbruck The cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I, castle Ambras
http://www.luxurytraveler.com/habsburgs.html
Austria's Links to the Habsburg Dynasty In 1273, Count Rudolf of the Habsburg family, a Swiss nobleman, was elected King of Germany. Within a decade, Rudolf secured the agreement of the Imperial Diet and the Prince Electors for the formal acceptance of his sons Albert and Rudolf to preside over Austria and Styria. This confirmed Habsburg rule in Austria. For the next 640 years, from 1278 to 1918, the Habsburgs reigned over a territory that grew from a small section of Austria along the Danube, into the 16th century realm of Charles V who could boast that "The sun never sets on my domain." He was referring to lands that stretched from Northwestern Europe to the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic to Central America. The Habsburg style of empire building was a remarkable early application of the philosophy "Make love, not war!" Expansion was accomplished by shrewd marriages, not by the sword. Wars were avoided at all costs - except for defensive struggles to keep other rulers from taking over far-flung possessions. As sovereigns of the Holy Roman Empire through the centuries, the Habsburgs made much of European history and exerted a degree of influence on the Americas as well. No other royal line on the continent lasted so long, left its mark on so many centuries, or so many countries as the Habsburgs. Their Golden Ages were also high points in the cultural, artistic, and scholarly development of Europe.
