Hello and welcome my name is John Hurrey and I am a collector of cartoon and promotional drinking glasses. My collection began with the 1973 Warner Brothers series and I now collect any character or logo drinking glass. The collection has now increased to over 3000 different drinking glasses.
I created this web site so that it would be easier for me to keep track of what glass I need to complete in each series. I believe the most difficult thing about drinking glass collecting is finding information on them. Hopefully other glass collectors will find this web site to be a useful reference source to identify a glass, the date issued and how it was distributed. If you have any additional information about a certain drinking glass or series, please contact me, so that I may add this information to be shared with others.
All of the drinking glasses that are pictured in this web site are from my personal collection and are NOT for sale. If you are interested in buying drinking glasses please visit

150. Cartoon Voices
By Mark Evanier. POV Online An informative overview of the business of voice acting its history, how it works and how to get in.
http://povonline.com/cols/COL101.htm
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 9/27/96 In the last four days, I've received three letters and two phone calls from people who want to get into the field of doing cartoon voices. One of the calls almost stunned me with its nonchalant assumption that this is an easy-entrance business. This lady seemed to think it was like signing up to earn frequent-flyer mileage. I imagine her deciding she wants to be in the movies, then calling up Martin Scorsese and saying, "Hi. I'm a clerk-typist here in Dayton, Ohio. Is it okay if I star opposite Robert DeNiro in your next movie?" It would be wrong to tell these aspiring voice artists that what they want is impossible. In show business, nothing is impossible, except an honest accounting of profits. Not all that long ago, Conan O'Brien was a writer and bit-part performer. If he'd told me he wanted to take over for David Letterman on NBC, I'd have gone, "Uh-huh, well, I wouldn't bet on that ever happening." Still, when folks ask me about something like getting into cartoon-voicing, I feel I'd be doing them a disservice not to clue them in that it might not be all that easy to attain. Is it possible? Of course. But then so is winning the lottery. The first cartoon voice artist was probably Walt Disney. He made the first sound cartoons and he cast himself, altogether appropriately, as Mickey Mouse. Many of the early makers of animated talkies looked no further than their own staffs, conscripting artists and secretaries to stand, often trembling, before the microphones.

153. Cartoon Voices, Part 1
By Mark Evanier. POVOnline.com Comprehensive threepart article chronicling the history of voice acting in animation from the beginning (1928). Explains early voice recording, voice casting, Screen Actors Guild contracts, session fees, multi-voicers, one-voicers, and details on Mel Blanc, Howard Morris, Don Messick, Daws Butler, Dick Beals, June Foray, Paul Frees, William Conrad, Bill Scott, Jean Vander Pyl, Frank Welker, and Dave Barry.
http://povonline.com/cols/COL267.htm
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 12/10/99 Boy, I hope you people wanna hear about cartoon voices. If not, I'm going to bore you silly with this column and next week's sequel. I know some of you are interested. 167 weeks ago, I did a piece on the cartoon voices, with emphasis on how one might beat the rather formidable odds against getting a job doing them. It is, to date, the POV most requested by those who either missed or mislaid it and want a copy. Some requests have come from folks who aspire to become cartoon voice artists. Others are from actors established in that field, seeking something they can hand out so they don't have to explain it for the eight-zillionth time. (That should tip you off as to what the competition is like...) As we all know, the first commercially-released cartoon with sound was Steamboat Willie (1928) which starred Mickey Mouse. That made Walter Elias Disney, who supplied Mickey's squeaks, the first-ever cartoon voice actor. Other voices in other early sound 'toons were done by studio personnel. For a time, they were adequate. The fact that a cartoon talked at all was pretty impressive. Great acting was not requisite. Most of the early animation companies were affiliated with major motion picture producers and were often housed on the corresponding lot. Leon Schlesinger's cartoon studio, for instance, produced films that were released by Warner Brothers, and his operation was on the WB facility in Hollywood. Eventually, his operation became the WB cartoon studio.

Cartooning in Britain has an unrivalled heritage going back over many hundreds of years. From Hogarth through Gillray via Will Dyson Low and Vicky to the present day, cartoonists have had a major impact on readers. The corrupt New York politician Boss Tweed famously blamed Nast's "damned pictures" for his decline. Low's Blimp, Vicky's drawing of Alec Douglas-Home, Bell's Major with underpants have created images that burned in the mind. Today there are more political cartoonists employed by British newspapers and periodicals than ever before. The Political Cartoon Society will mine this rich vein of visual history both through our quarterly newsletter as well as organising exhibitions of original cartoon art based on political and historical themes.
