Images are accessible from the late 1700's up to the early 1900's Some of these images preceded comic strips while others are from the medium's period of dazzling growth and creativity which occurred in the early 20th century. A bout The Ohio State University Treasury of Fine Art, Cartoon Reserch Library T he Cartoon Research Library's primary mission is to develop a comprehensive research collection of materials documenting American printed cartoon art (editorial cartoons, comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, sports cartoons, and magazine cartoons) and to provide access to these collections. The library does not collect materials about animation. T he Cartoon Research Library was established in 1977 in two converted classrooms in the Journalism Building with the gifts-in-kind of the Milton Caniff Collectio n and the Jon Whitcomb Collection . The largest single gift-in-kind to date is the Robert Roy Metz Collection of 83,034 original cartoons by 113 cartoonists. It was appraised at $9.1 million and donated by United Media in 1992. 104. George Rarey's World War II Air Force Cartoon Journals
During his service he kept a cartoon journal of the daily life of the fighter pilots. A few treats of wartime art, old snapshots and assorted artifacts.
http://www.rareybird.com/
Damon Rarey, the author of this site, passed away on December 15, 2002.
An online memorial has come together in his honor. This past summer [2002] the EAA Museum in Oshkosh WI mounted a magnificent exhibit of Captain George Rarey's original artwork. The exhibit has been extended and will run through April of 2003 [note: it has now become a permanent installation at EAA]. In 1942 my father, George Rarey, a young cartoonist and commercial artist, was drafted into the Army Air Corps. He flew a P-47 before he drove a car. During his service he kept a cartoon journal of the daily life of the fighter pilots. A few weeks after D-Day he was killed in combat over France. His journals are a part of his legacy to me - one that I want to share with others through this web page. Browse through his drawings and words. Their joyful spirit dwarfs the background landscape of war. George Rarey didn't care much for his first name and was known exclusively as "Rarey." (My mother thought Rarey was his first name until they had had several dates.) The exception to this was his fellow pilots. Because he was a few years older than most of the pilots - a ripe old 25 - in the Air Corps he was known as "Dad." The drawings on this web site have explanatory text contributed by surviving members of the 379th Fighter Squadron, excerpts from Rarey's letters to his bride (my mother), Betty Lou, as well as from my mother's memoirs.

    116. WELCOME TO A SITE ABOUT LONG AGO
Details the histories of companies involved in the acquistion of classic cartoons for home movie and television syndication.
    http://www.geocities.com/argussventon/cartoondistributors/cartoondistributors.ht
A TIME LONG AGO, CIRCA 1950
Back in the early 1950's, a new medium was out there, just waiting to be exploited.
    TELEVISION!
Meanwhile, the motion picture studios had been ordered to divest themselves, of the theatre chains that they owned. They needed money, so some decided to sell their film libraries, including animated cartoons. This site is about the companies that bought theatrical cartoons.
Soon, television distributors and home movie companies were getting into the lucreative syndication business. Meanwhile, in television markets around the United States, local stations used kiddie shows to air the cartoons, while making a sizeable profit off the advertising during the shows.
This period lasted for several years, until 1970. New FCC regulations limited the amount of advertising during kiddie shows, and as a result, they left the airwaves. Also, color television was now the rule, not the exception, and as a result, many black and white cartoons were shelved.
Also, home movie companies, which bought classic cartoons, soon because victims of a new industry, home video. As a result, the home movie business faltered.
Here are the stories about these television and home movie distributors of classic animation. Welcome to Argus Sventon's Cartoon Distributor Site.
