Comic and Cartoon Art: What's So Funny About This?
Thomas M. Edmondson
Abstract
India ink appears to have been the medium of choice, often with graphite underdrawing. Corrections and editorial alterations were often made with a white lead pigment, evidenced by frequently observed stages of deterioration from gray to black. Acrylic white-out pigments seem to begin appearing around mid-century. According to conversations with one of my clients who specializes in dealing in this and other illustration genres, many of the changes rendered through the use of white-out were made at the editor's request, or even in the printing room by a pressman, and were done to make the published image more readable. Other editorial notations and directives were made with blue pencils. This paper presents the extensive and complex conservation treatments of two India ink cartoon drawings by Thomas S. Sullivant, whose work spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This artist had a rather unique approach to his work by making his corrections as he drew. His apparent preference for correcting or changing his design was to remove the ink by scratching it off the surface of the paper. Not only did this result in a rough and disturbed surface, but he made many changes in the same few areas, often working his way through successive plies of the Bristol board. In addition to this "nature of the working process" condition, the supports had sustained extensive water and microbial damage, and had heavy surface soiling. One of the supports also had mottled red staining throughout the bottom third, had been chewed by rodents, and smelled like brake or power steering fluid, although the client maintained that the piece had been treated with thymol only.

Anime and Cartoon Art
Newest work Two Girls - August 2005 Original characters. Copic and gouache on smooth Bristol. Mugen - June 2005 Mugen from Samurai Champloo . Actually, I drew this in Painter 9 back in March but forgot to upload it until now. This was published in Anime Insider , but I stupidly forgot to send the editor my real name and contact info, so it's attributed to "Maynard McGuffin". Hee hee! Warriors of Justice - May 2005 Done while watching reruns on TNT. It hurts. Ed Liberates The Watermelon! - Sept 2004/April 2005 I started this one in coloured pencil on Bristol while bored at JTAF 2 back in September. Cleaning out my sketchpads and stuff getting ready for ACen, I found this piece again and decided to scan it and touch it up in Photoshop. It's a lot harder to blend coloured pencil in Photoshop than I thought... Anime Central Program Book Cover - March/April 2005 Cover artwork for the Anime Central 2005 program book cover.

Art of Cartoon In Turkey, the art of cartoon started in the second half of 19th century and has developed in parallel to liveliness in publication life. With the publication of the first humor magazine, Diyojen , cartoon reached an independent milieu of publication. The cartoons of the period show, generally, the characteristic of drawings that emphasize the humorous side of anecdotes and poems, and of those drawings that ornament them. With the establishment of the Republic, Cemal Nadir Guler and Ramiz Gokce, two important artists of Turkish cartoons, contributed, with their drawings, to the efforts of establishing a new state and of creating a Republican society. In the same period, Akbaba (Vulture), the most long-lived humor magazine of the Republican period, published by Yusuf Ziya Ortac, and in which various tendencies were displayed, left its mark on the period, in view of its cadre of strong authors and cartoonists. Along with the new freedoms due to the transition to multi-party order in the aftermath of World War II, a transformation was experienced in hu- mor. Marko Pasa, which was published by Saba- hattin Ali and Aziz Nesin and whose cartoonist was Mustafa Uykusuz, was the most important humor magazine of the period.

May 2004 Community Crusade - CARTOON ART MUSEUM This May, KUSF's Community Crusade zeroes in on the fanciful treats offered at the one and only Cartoon Art Museum. The Cartoon Art Museum is the only place in the nation dedicated entirely to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in its many forms. In addition to a 6,000 piece permanent exhibition of treasures such as 19th century political cartoons and 1940s animation cels, the museum has a cartoon art classroom, bookstore, and guest speakers' program. Throughout May, the Cartoon Art Museum is featuring the timeless art of Theodor Geisel. The Seussentennial Exhibit commemorates the 100th birthday of the Good Doctor with vintage Seuss artifacts, rare original drawings and paintings by one of America's most beloved storytellers and cartoon artists. Not to mention incredible insects, feathered flocks and animated animals, including the Grinch and the Cat in the Hat, all demonstrating the enduring ingenuity and artistry of Dr. Seuss. Also, check out cartoons that spawned feature films in "Lights, Camera, Action - From the Printed Page to the Silver Screen" and the Small Press Spotlight, featuring the independently published work of Justin Hall such as his online comic tale of Glamazonia: The Uncanny Super Tranny.
