Comment: Couldn't find any info on the artist at the show, and when I dial the salon phone number I get a message asking me to send an email, so let's just call it big paintings with faces on them. In addition to the paintings, a company called Lindland's is selling horizontal patterned corduroy and seersucker pants (as opposed to traditional vertical patterns). Their business card says "Finally, horizontal corduroy pants." I never really thought about it, but corduroy has always been vertical, hasn't it? There must be a reason. Don't you think? Well anyway, here's the pics...

: Group Show. Comment: Figural male art, mainly. The show is primarily graphics and drawings, smaller format, with a smattering of sculpture, photography, and paintings. A pretty decent selection overall, period and contemporary, nice feel to the gallery, and if this kind of art is your kinda thing, then I'd recommend you stop by and see the show.

This is an image of Bosko's dog, Bruno, pulling a cart. This is a very rare image of Buddy from Friz Freleng's "Buddy The Gob" (1934). Artwork from this period is fairly hard to come by, if not simply because of its age. Ham and Ex, two puppies who briefly appeared as costars to Porky Pig and Beans the Cat, are shown here being chased by a pirate dog in Jack King's "The Phanton Ship" (1936) Animation drawings from Chuck Jones' "Inki and the Lion"(1941). One of the Seven Dwarfs in an animation drawing from Bob Clampett's wartime classic "Coal Black And De Sebben Dwarfs." Two drawings from Chuck Jones' "Broomstick Bunny"(1956), featuring Witch Hazel and her magic mirror. Animation drawing of Bugs Bunny from Chuck Jones' "What's Opera, Doc?"(1957). The Mighty Angelo, an incredibly strong flea, made a memorable one-shot appearance in Chuck Jones' "To Itch His Own"(1958.) It was also the last WB cartoon with music composed by Carl Stalling.

By Their Cartoons Shall Ye Know Them By Crispin Sartwell
We are privileged to live in the second golden age of the cartoon. Such contemporary classics as The Powerpuff Girls, Cat Dog, Angry Beavers, and Sponge Bob Square Pants tower over our society artistically and intellectually. The first golden age was during the nineteen forties and fifties, when the basic form of the animated short feature was defined. These cartoons were screened before movies and, later, cobbled together to make television shows. And though the Disney studios created the visually richest animation, Disney cuteness slid easily and often into insipidity. The real soul of the cartoon was created at Warner Bros., where such free spirits as Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, and Friz Freleng gave birth to even freer spirits such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, and Pepe Le Pew. Bugs and Daffy were truly subversive icons: their talk was free-association, rapid-fire standup; they were animated in a style somewhere between Salvador Dali and Jackson Pollock; they devoted their lives to torturing authority figures such as Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig; they liked to dress in drag and imitate Mae West; they revelled in revolutionary violence. In short, they combined the approaches of Oscar Wilde, Sigmund Freud, Groucho Marx, and Che Guevara. Other studios, such as MGM, which hired the great Tex Avery away from Warner's, were on the same wavelength. Tom and Jerry speechlessly pursued their path of glorious destruction in a continual enactment of the victory of the undermouse over the uberkitty.
