This article describes how map making has played an important role in the development of mathematics. It is hardly surprising that cartography should be considered as a mathematical discipline in early times since cartography measures positions of places (mathematics was the science of measurement) and represents a the surface of a sphere on a two dimensional map.
Early attempts at maps were severely limited by lack of knowledge of anything other than very local features. In Egypt geometry was used from very early times to help measure land. The annual flooding by the Nile meant that without such measurements it was impossible to reconstruct the boundaries that had existed before the flood. Such measurements, however, seem only to have been of local use and there is no evidence that the Egyptians integrated the measurements into maps of large areas. The oldest extant example of a local Egyptian map is the Turin papyrus which dates from around 1300 BC. Early world maps reflect the religious beliefs of the form of the world. For example maps have been discovered on Babylonian clay tablets dating from around 600 BC. One such map shows Babylon and the surrounding area in a stylised form with Babylon represented by a rectangle and the Euphrates river by vertical lines. The area shown is depicted as circular surrounded by water which fits the religious image of the world in which the Babylonians believed.

The core of this course is the laboratory project: students will locate data on the world wide web (WWW), process the data so it can be mapped in ArcGIS (GIS and mapping software), and design and produce a series of maps based on the data. Students will learn to construct basic HTML pages, containing the project maps, which will be placed on the WWW at the end of the semester. Lab work is informed by lectures which focus on the concepts, frameworks, and technical issues of cartographic design and visualization. Course Prerequisites: none, but taking Geography 222: The Power of Maps first is strongly recommended.

The European Voyages of Exploration In the early period of European exploration, captains had rudimentary navigation techniques and a fairly detailed set of Mediterranean portolanos ( charts) showing the bodies of water, landmasses, and ports. These charts were not drawn to a grid system of degrees, but were based on compass findings and estimated distances. From this point of view, cartography was very similar to early astronomy in that the product was paradoxically the result of both scientific and metaphysical endeavours. Some astronomers were attracted to the study of stars because of their interest in astrology. The same is true of cartographers whose main purpose was not to discover what actually existed but, rather, to rationalise the world around preconceived notions of religion and philosophy. Ptolemaic Style Map 1432 Nevertheless, it is possible to make a few general statements about the practice of cartography. If it is possible to identify one great influence, it would undoubtedly be that of Claudius Ptolemaeus, or Ptolemy, (130 C.E.) and the Arab geographers who followed. In 151 C.E., Ptolemy published a work on map-making called Geographia From this intellectual heritage sprang the twin tendencies of medieval European geographers and cartographers to create maps that were, generally speaking, either fanciful or factual. On the one hand, there was a tendency to construct a symmetrically perfect design of God's creation that also incorporated the metaphysical beliefs of Europe. For example, the Psalter Map of the thirteenth century depicted a world with Christ at the top and dragons crushed beneath him at the bottom. Furthermore, in the Psalter Map, Jerusalem was the centre of the world, and legends and myths were inscribed in places instead of geographical data, thus effectively blending fact and fantasy.

Atlases, maps, and gazetteers are available in print, microform, and electronic formats in several of the UC Berkeley libraries. The Library's primary collection of maps and other cartographic materials is located in the , 50 McCone Hall. Other campus collections include The Bancroft Library's historical maps of California and western North America and the East Asian Library's historical maps of Japan and gazetteers of East Asia. In addition, the Water Resources Center Archives has an extensive collection of historical and current maps related to water, as well as a collection of coastal aerial photographs dating from the mid-1940's to the mid-1950's. Maps and other cartographic materials at UC Berkeley can be located by searching the library catalogs

Pathfinder is the catalog used to find maps and other items in most of the UC Berkeley libraries. Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries of the ten UC campuses and other research collections in the state; it also includes several UC Berkeley affiliated libraries not included in Pathfinder.
The best way to find maps or atlases in these library catalogs is to search by "subject keyword" and limit the search by publication format "maps." Cartographic materials such as gazetteers, aerial photographs, and nautical charts can also be searched by "subject keyword." For some examples of subject searches, see
