Google: Yahoo: MSN: The UW-Madison Department of Geography is a leader in the field of geography and offers exceptional opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate education. The Department has been consistently rated as one of the best in the country, currently rated as the number two graduate program, and for over 100 years has been the training ground for generations of geographers. The strength of our department is reflected in our ability to attract top-caliber students, compete for significant research funding, and win major awards, including more Guggenheim Fellowships than any other geography department. Our faculty have been recognized both by the university and within our profession with such honors as UW named chairs , and AAG lifetime achievement awards Our Geography Program is divided into five major thematic areas : physical geography, environmental studies, human geography, area studies and global systems, as well as cartography and GIS. Degrees in Geography are offered at the B.A./B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels. In addition, students can earn a B.S. or M.S. in Cartography and GIS, or they can enroll in our very successful 1-year GIS Certificate Program.

CONTRARY TO THE REGISTRAR'S LISTINGS: The course and its content have been upgraded to "Computational Cartography." COMPUTATIONAL CARTOGRAPHY is an exciting, informative, and personal hands-on exploration of maps in the digital age. It is an inquiry into how we perceive and represent spatial reality and how we come to know and understand the world around us through the practices of computational cartography. We will examine how computers are changing the age-old media of map-making from the technologies of ink on paper to those of bits, bytes and phosphors on glass screen monitors. We will deconstruct the cultural contexts of mappings from their creation, through their distribution and usage, and ultimately to their obsolescence. We will foreground those coevolutionary mechanisms that link

Versamap for Windows 2.07

Versamap draws outline maps on 14 map projections. The program allows users to print publication quality maps on any printer supported by Windows; and to export maps in vector graphic (WMF, CGM, DXF, ASCII) and bitmapped (BMP) formats.
Versamap is supplied with digital maps from the Versamap Micro World Database, which contain boundaries for the new countries that have formed from the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, for Eritrea, for Canadian Provinces, and for Australian States. More detailed digital maps from the CIA`s World Data Bank II and from the USGS Digital Line Graph database may be purchased from the author. Individual geographic features, such as coastlines, rivers, islands, and political boundaries, can be plotted from these digital map databases.
The program allows users to plot their own data (as lines or symbols) in a simple ASCII format, and to display labels next to their data points.
Text may be added to maps using any Windows font. Each text string can have a different font, and can be rotated in 1 degree increments.
The program plots Great Circles between user selected endpoints, and reports course and distance at points along the Great Circle. Versamap also reports map parameters and scale errors at selected points on the map.

Teaching
My recent teaching has included GEO 221 Introduction to Geographic Information (an integrated introduction to cartography, GIS, and remote sensing), GEO 485 Senior Seminar in Geography Education (for geo teaching minors and concentrators), GEO 480 Senior Seminar in Geography (for majors), GEO 426 Thematic Cartography, GEO 463 Quantitative Methods in Geography and Planning GEO 801 Issues in GISci, and GEO 874 Seminar in Geographic Information Science. I used to teach GEO 423 Map Production and Design , and I teach other courses on occasion.
Research Interests
I am interested in geographic information science and cartography. My work has been primarily in the area of quantitative mapping and the psychology of maps. Subjects of publications have included: map complexity, two-variable maps, the use of color in mapping, designing maps for people with defective color vision, and multimedia in geography. I have enjoyed working with classes on special projects including the development of a tactile map of the MSU campus (for use with the Nomad), production of a prototype CD-ROM, development of web products, construction of full-color paper maps, and building our local knowledge of high tech presentation graphics.

The National Council for the Social Studies identifies 10 themes in social studies. The one that relates to Geography (III) is called "People, Places and Environment." The guide further provides eleven "Performance Expectations" in this area and gives three examples of how a lesson might be constructed to achieve some of these objectives.
In one example, a teacher reads an account of the monsoon from the perspective of the people of India. Although elsewhere in the guide, social studies teachers are encouraged to take a less directive and active role in instruction, here the teacher uses direct instruction.
Would it be more interesting to the students to contact another student in India during the monsoon season and obtain a variety of reactions/description of the impact on the people from an Indian viewpoint? Would it be more meaningful, challenging? Would the results be more likely to be "integrated" and would the student be more likely to feel he/she is an active participant in the educational process?
