Maps are an important geographic tool. The making of maps is a scientific field known as cartography and the first maps are believed to have been made in the Stone Age. A scale is an important aspect of a map because it allows comparison between an actual distance and the distance represented on a map. The world map (right) uses the Robinson projection because it is a two-dimensional image trying to represent the surface of a three dimensional sphere.

The IK reference library
The IK library is a small reference library. First established in 1988, it has grown in line with the projects that IK has worked on. Specialised subjects include natural history, geography, the history of science, cartography, history, art, Quaternary geology (maritime), natural sciences, Carl Linnaeus (Apostles) and archaeology (maritime and aerial photography).
The library also possesses a collection of maps and atlases and a collection of watercolours - the latter are primarily of subjects found in the countryside of Northern Europe.
The library is continually added to through purchases, donations and exchanges. A collection of offprints, a special collection of beautiful books and a collection of donated manuals and guides - these include the renowned Swedish author Elof Stoltz's notes from his research into the history of industry and alum.
COLLECTIONS The owners of a collection also have the added responsibility of looking after it. Although IK was not set up to act as a steward or administrator of valuable cultural or natural historical collections, we have accepted the responsibility of taking care of collections that are related to the subject matter we work with.
